1. Introduction

IPTV SMARTERS, commonly called Smarters, is a very popular IPTV player due to its ease of
use and it can be installed on practically any device including most streaming devices, phones,
computers, and smart TVs. It’s a very basic player, pretty much just plug and play so it’s great
for those just starting in the IPTV world.
With the simplicity of this player, also comes a drawback, even though there are a few options
for setting it up, there’s no customization options to tailor it to your liking.

The best place to get Smarters is directly from the developer at www.iptvsmarters.com.

2. Playlists

Playlists are the providers of the service, since TiViMate refers to them as playlists, that’s what I
will call them here. The quality of TiViMate is very dependent on the quality of the playlist. There
are three different types of playlists that can be used with TiViMate. 1. m3u which is one single
URL line usually ending in m3u or m3u8 but can sometimes be a bit.ly short code or similar. 2.
Xtream Code which uses a URL, user name, and password, many times the URL will end with a
port number such as :80. 3. Stalker Portal Code, uses a URL and a MAC address, many times
the URL will end with /c. The type of playlist has nothing to do with quality, that is just the way
you access the playlist.

Note: don’t waste a lot of time on a playlist, there are thousand of them available. If it buffers a
little or the EPG isn’t working good, there are some things you can try to get them working, but
after a couple tries and it still doesn’t work, just delete it and move on with another one.

Here are some free playlist you can try to help you get started. Enter these an m3u playlists.

3. Setup Guide

After you have installed Smarters and open it for the first time, you will be asked to set the
Device Option, it should auto detect what your using, but make sure it’s set on TV if your using a
streaming device. Then accept the license agreement, then you will be directed to Add User
screen to start your setup.

1. There are six options for adding your playlist, the only two you will want to use will be M3U
PLAYLIST and XTREME CODES. STALKER PORTAL is an option which is not currently
available but will be added on a future update. If using the M3U playlist, click on it and enter
your URL, then click next.

If using Xtream Codes, enter your Server Address (URL), click next, enter your user name, click
next, enter your password, click next, then scroll to the right and click on next. I’ll be using an
Xtreme Code.

2. Once you added your credentials, select Add Playlist. If your playlist loads successfully, you
will now be on this page. Click on each of the three options to get them to download the content.
This is your Home Page.
3. After you have downloaded the content, click on any of the three options to go to the list of
categories for the one you selected. In the Live TV, once you choose a category, it will take you
to the TV Guide. In the Movies or Series you will have the categories listed in the left and the
content to each category on the right with thumbnails.

There are also three other options, Live with EPG, Multi-screen, and Catch Up. If the provider
does not have Catch-up, it will be Settings.

4. Playing Media

When I was using Smarters to play my media, there’s a few things I encountered that I want to
point out.

1. Several times I’ve had a popup at the bottom of the screen that said “Something Went
Wrong!”, this was happening when I was exiting a live stream or movie, Several times I also got
a playback error message. I have no idea why it does this as everything I was doing was
working just fine, probably just a bug.
2. When playing from the Live TV category from the Home Screen, I selected a category from
the left, scrolled to the center then found a channel I wanted to watch, I clicked on it once, it
played in the preview window, when I clicked on it again, it would come up but just freeze. If I
clicked on the preview window when it was playing, it came up and played just fine.
3. Playing movies or series, many times it would not play, just show as an error. When I used an
external player (VLC), it played just fine.
4. When playing from the Live with Guide, everything worked as it should.
5. Every time I switched channels or went to a movie or series, it would always mute the sound
and I would have to hit the volumn on the remote to get the sound to start.

5. Purchasing Premium
The developer does not charge for the premium, you are simply setting up an account, no credit
card or any other form of payment is needed, the only personal information you are giving is
your email address which you can use any email address you want. If you are asked for your
credit card information, you’ve gone to the wrong place.
Click on the Buy Premium Version in the bottom right corner of the app and follow the steps just
like your making a purchase, you will see there is no charge for it, your only registering an
account.
Once you’ve set up your account, go back to Smarters and log in with the email and password
you used to create your account.
There are many places you can get a modified Smarters app, but I would rather get the app
directly through the developer than from someone who has modified it.

6. Selecting Playlists

Smarters will only use one playlist at a time, if you have more than one playlist installed, go to
the Settings in far upper right of your Home Screen, click on it, then go to Switch Playlist and
choose the playlist you want to use.
7. Recommended Initial Settings

Go to Setting and select:

1. General Settings: scroll to the bottom, choose Select Your Preferred Language and set it to
what you want.
2. Stream Format: select HLS.
3. Automation: set both of these to 1 day.
4. Time Format: set to 12 or 24, whichever you prefer.
5. Install a media player such as VLC or MX Player (if you don’t already have one). Then go to
Settings/External Players and Add Player to add it/them to your list.

8. Favorites

Saving your favorite channels, movies, and series into one place where they are easy to find is
an option that comes in real handy as they will then be saved to your Favorites category’s.

1. Saving favorites on Live TV.

a. From the channel guide, when you click on a channel to watch it, you will get the option to
Play, Save to Favorites, or Close.
b. From the Live TV category, long press the select button and you’ll get the options to Add to
Favorites, Start recording, or use your external player.
2. Saving favorites on Movies and Series.
a. When on the list of movies/series, select a movie, long press the select button and a heart
icon will appear in the movie/series thumbnail.
b. After selecting a movie/series and on the information page, there’s a heart icon up near the
right, click on it and it will turn red.

9. Search

The search feature is a great way to easily find whatever you may be looking for. You can
search by simply typing in keywords such as actors name, movie, program name, channel, etc.

The global search is at the top of the Home Page, this will search through all the Live Channels,
Movies, Series, and Programs and will return what is found in each category on your playlist.

In the Live TV, Movies, and Series sections, each have a search in the upper right (magnifying
glass). This will search the category you are currently in.

10. Editing Categories and Channels

Unfortunately, you cannot edit the categories or channels in Smarters, what you see is what you
get.
You can lock (hide) the categories by using the Parental Controls and they will not show when
you go to the media folders, this does clean it up for you and makes it much easier to use
without having to scroll through all the categories to find the one you want.
You can also set the sort order in each library or on the channel guide. When opening any of
these, go to settings in the upper right corner, click on it, then you can set the sort order.

11. EPGs

There’s not much you can do as far as editing the EPGs for a playlist except add an EPG to a
playlist and set it as the default. Your playlist can only have one EPG assigned to it.
If your playlist has an EPG that is not working, go to Settings/EPG then go to Sources. Click on
add source and enter the URL and hit Save. Then once the EPG is loaded as an option, click on
it and set it as the default, it will then download and be the EPG source for the playlist.

These are a couple EPGs you can add and try.

https://guidexml.tvnow.best/

12. EPG Time Offset

To correct the time on your TV Guide.

Go to Settings/EPG/EPG Timeshift and adjust the time up or down until your TV Guide
information is correct.

13. Video on Demand (VOD)

This is dependent on what the provider has included in the service, many only provide live TV
but many others also offer movies and TV series.

On your Home Screen, select either Movies or TV Series. It will show the categories on the left
and thumbnails of the programs on the right. There is also a search option on the top of the
page to search for what you want, next to it you have the options to Hide the Movie/Series
Name or to sort the movies/series.
14. Audio and Video Settings

There are a few audio and video setting you can adjust that may help with the quality of your
audio or video playback.

In Settings:
a. Stream Format, change between MPEGTS and HLS. (should be HLS)
b. Player Settings, choose between Hardware or Software Decoder. (should be Hardware
Decoder)
When playing media:
a. Press the select button, scroll down to Aspect Ratio to change the picture size.
b. Go to the settings in the upper right, you will get a menu to set the video, audio, and text
tracks.

15. Maintenance

Since Smarters is a very simple app without a lot of complexities, there’s no maintenance of the
app that needs to be done.

It is however recommended to have a monthly maintenance routine. Go into your device

settings and ti the application management. Force stop Smarters and clear the cache, DO NOT
CLEAR DATA, you will lose everything you’ve done. Then unplug your streaming device,
modem/router and let them sit for about five minutes. Plug them all back in and let them reboot.
16. Buffering

There are many things that can cause buffering and there’s no magic solution that fixes
everyone’s problems. Smarters is not the issue.
First you need to know what is it doing to better determine if it’s on your end or the provider's
end.

If it’s on your end.

You normally will experience all channels in all playlists buffer.
Most common solution is to reboot everything, router, modem, and streaming device. Unplug
everything and let sit at least 5 minutes, then plug it all back in and let it start back up.
How full is your storage? Most streamers recommend at least 1gb, but as long as your close,
you’ll be fine. If not, go into your device settings and clear the cache and force stop all apps. If
that doesn’t work, you may need to uninstall apps you don’t use much.
How many devices are using your WiFi at the same time, you may have it overloaded and
exceeding your limits. Are your streaming devices still streaming? Just turning off your TV does
not stop them, they are still using your internet and bandwidth. Open them up and force stop all
apps.
You need to check your wifi and the speed. Do you have a strong reliable wifi and getting at
least 25-30mbps on your device? If not, maybe plugging it in direct with an Ethernet cable might
help.
How old is your equipment, if it’s over 5 years old, you probably need to upgrade it.

Some things you can try if you suspect it’s on your end.
Go to Settings/Player Settings and go to Buffer Size Limit and adjust it up or down to see if that
helps.
Update your playlist.
Go to your device settings, then to manage applications, clear the cache and force stop
Smarters.
You can also try changing the Output Format between MPEG-TS and HLS. To do this, go to
Settings/Stream Format and choose either MPEGTS or HLS (whatever one it’s not currently set
on).

Note: MPEG-TS offers higher quality video and audio than HLS but it requires greater
bandwidth and storage space than the HLS. Additionally, since MPEG-TS files are larger than
HLS files, they take longer to download or buffer before playback.

These are some signs of a provider issue:

If some playlists buffer but not others, or only a few channels buffer. You probably need to find
another playlist because this provider just isn’t working for you.
It runs good at certain times and at other times it doesn’t. This could be that at certain times the
playlist gets overloaded with use and the provider’s bandwidth has been exceeded. Keep this
playlist, it’ll make a good backup but look for another one to use as your main.

17. Catch Up (Archived Shows)

Smarters does not have what is actually Catch Up, what it does have is Archived Shows.
Select Catch Up then the categories that offer the archived shows will come up, select a
category, then scroll through and select a channel, a list of shows and the time they were aired
will appear, just select the show you want to watch.

18. Recording

There’s an icon at the top of the page for Recordings, it will list your recordings and give you the
option to set the recording path to your preferred folder. However, it does not allow you to set
the path to external storage.

To start a recording, go to Live TV on your home page, select a category then select your
channel/program. Long press the select button and a menu will pop up, select Start Recording
then choose your options, name of the recording, how long to record, choose the folder to
record to if you haven’t already set it, then start recording.
Note: since the only option is to save recordings to your internal storage, you won’t be able to
record much before your device is full. Also, there is no option to record future programs, only
the one you are currently watching.
I did format a flash drive as internal/device storage and was able to set up a folder and record to
it.

19. Downloading:

When in the VOD, Movies and Series, there is an option to download. Once downloaded, you
can go to Downloads at the top of your Home Screen and a list of your downloaded programs
will be shown. Whenever you download media from the internet, it is very highly recommended
that you use a VPN.

Note: I did do a download to test it, it worked great, but, I don’t know where it saves the
downloaded media to, I used a file explorer and checked everywhere on the device and couldn’t
find it. It’s possible the download storage is cloud based, if this is the case, then you will still
need internet service to play your downloads which actually defeats the purpose of
downloading.

20. Closed Caption

Closed Caption (subtitles) is very often used by many, not just for the hearing impaired, but is
also used when the spoken language may not be understood by the watcher so the language
the watcher understands will be presented in print.

I searched and tried every setting there is and could not find subtitles for the live TV. They do
work very well on the Movies and Series though.

First, you will need to go into the Settings/Subtitles and select the server.
When playing a movie or a series, press the select button, go to the bottom and select Subtitles.
You will need to download the subtitles, this will start the subtitles. You can then press the
select button and go to the settings in the upper right. From this menu, scroll to Text and select
it. From here you will have a list of the languages the subtitles are available in (select None to
turn off subtitles), select the language you prefer, then click OK.
21. Multi-Screen

Multi- Screen allows you to watch up to four programs at once on the same screen.

To set up Multi-Screen, from the Home Screen, select Multi-Screen, you will get the options to
pick your preferred layout. Select the layout you want then the boxes for the layout will appear.
Select one and you will go to the Live Categories page to find the channel you want, after
selecting a channel, go to the next box and do the same.
After you have your channels selected and they are showing on your multi-screen, toggle back
and forth for the one you want to hear the audio on. You can click on one and it will go full
screen, hit the back button and you’ll be returned to the multi-screen.

Note: when using multi-screen, each channel you select is counted as one connection, if the
provider does not allow for more than one connection at a time, your multi-screen may not work.

22. User-Agent

There are some providers that will only let you use the player they prefer and will block any
other players. They get the information on what player you are using by the user agent.
To change your User Agent, go to Settings/General Settings, then scroll down to Set Playlist
Agent. This can be helpful if you believe your provider is blocking you from using Smarters, try
changing it to VLC or MXPlayer.

23. Parental Controls

Use this option to hide categories in your media folders. This helps by locking (hiding) the
categories you won’t be using so you don’t have to scroll though all of them when searching for
what you want to watch.

Go to Settings/Parental Controls. The first time you go to it, you’ll be asked to enter a password
(PIN number), make sure you don’t lose it or you won’t be able to go back to it later.
Once you enter your PIN, you will go to a list of your categories. Which group your using is
displayed across the top. Scroll through the categories and lock the ones you don’t want
showing, select each group and do the same with each group.

Note: you will have to do this with each playlist.

24. Using An External Player

It is recommended to install a media player such as VLC or MX Player to your device. These
are easily obtainable through the Amazon App Store or the Google Play Store.
When you have an external player installed on your device, go to Settings/External Players and
add the player to Smarters by clicking Add Player and choose it from the list.
You can then go to Settings/Player Selection and assign the external player to each media
function so they are automatically played with the external player but it not necessary as you
can chose it when needed.
Now you have an external player installed and added to Smarters, when you select a VOD
program and press play, you will have the option to play it with your external player. Many times
when a program fails to play using the built in player, you can use the external player and get it
to work.

25. Backup/Restore

Backups for Smarters is cloud based and only useable with the same account.
Go to Settings/Backup & Restore, follow the onscreen instructions
Note: I tried to do a backup and restore just as a test, it failed to work for me.

26. Checking the Status of Your Account

For your playlist: From the Home Screen, go to the settings in the upper right corner, then select
Account Info, this will display your account information for the playlist you are currently using.
For your IPTV Smarters app, go to the My Smarters Account in the bottom right corner.

29. Common Error Codes

401, Access denied, usually permanent, the log- in credentials may have expired or no longer
valid. Possibly down for maintenance temporarily, but usually isn’t a good playlist anymore.

403, Access denied, usually temporary but could be permanent.

458, Region blocked, will need a VPN set to a different country to access.

504, usually temporary, the server may be overloaded and the request timed out.

DataSourceException, usually temporary, can try changing channels and go back, update
playlist, or just wait a while.

IllegalStateException, usually temporary and usually not all channels, it’s not on your end, it’s a
provider issue.

MediaCodecException, usually temporary, it’s on the providers end, try back later or try using an
external player.

DecoderInitializationException, go to Settings/Playback, scroll down to Audio Decoder and

Video Decoder, whatever you have it set as (Hardware/Software) change it, then reboot your
device.

30. FAQ

These are some of the questions that seem to be asked the most,

Is Smarters legal?

Smarters is completely legal as it is only a player and does not provide any content.
The providers are what are legal or illegal. To be a legal provider, they must possess all the
applicable licenses for the content they are providing.
Laws differ from country to country, in the US, it is legal to stream anything available on the
internet, providing content or downloading is usually illegal. You may want to check the laws in
your country if you are concerned.

Why does my playlist not work on Smarters but does on another app?

Sometimes the provider will block certain apps from playing their content.
It can also be the codex used to play that playlist is not available on Smarters but is on another
app.

Do I need a VPN?
That’s actually a personal choice. I have never used one and haven’t had any issues.
Some playlists are region blocked and using a VPN set to a different country will allow it to play.
Some people feel more secure using a VPN so they can mask their identity.
Users have claimed a VPN slows down their internet and will cause buffering, some people
have reported there is no affect at all. There could be a possibility that your internet provider is
throttling your connection and a VPN could resolve this, if you are experiencing buffering, you
could try a VPN and see if that t helps.

One thing to note is that your VPN can work differently on different playlists. If you have a
playlist that requires you to set a VPN, another playlist you have may quit working so if you do
have a playlist that does quit working for no apparent reason, try toggling your VPN on or off.

Why does my Smarters buffer at times and at other times doesn’t?

It’s not Smarters that buffers, it’s the playlist. Many times a seller can over sell his service and
ends up getting too many people logged in at the same time and their server can’t handle the
load. This usually happens in the evenings during prime time or when something such as
sporting events is being watched by a lot of people.
Your internet provider could also be having problems with too many users at the same time
during peek hours and is throttling your connection, but this is very rare.

Why does my Smarters not play video in 4k or 5.1 surround sound?

Smarters can only play in the resolution and audio that comes from the provider. It also depends
on your settings, both on IPTV Smarters and your streaming device. Try changing some
settings on both and see if it helps.

Why does my CC not work even after I selected the source?

You may be able to select a source for CC but it still won’t work, this is common, not all
providers have CC even if there’s an option to choose it, try changing playlists.
You can also use an external player and usually get it to work.

On my channel guide, most channels show what’s in but some say “no information”,
how can I fix this?

Some channels don’t have a channel guide and there’s nothing you can do. You may be able to
assign an external EPG source and get it to work.

When I use multi-screen it starts to buffer and sometimes doesn’t work?

Every channel you select for multi-screen is using another connection, if the provider does not
allow you to use more than one connection, it won’t work.
The more channels you have on multi-screen, the more resources your device is using, your
device may not be able to play more than one source at a time or your internet connection could
be over loaded. Force stop all apps.on your device and try again.

Is there an easier way to put in playlists and EPGs without having to manually type
everything in?

FireTV and Nvidia both have apps to install on your phone and use as a remote, they can be
found in the App Store or Playstore.
Both of them have the ability to use a keyboard or to copy and paste from your phone to the
device, they are very handy to have and save a lot of time as well as help to prevent mistyping.
Some people use a wireless/Bluetooth keyboard and find it’s much easier to type with than
using the remote.

How can I find when a playlist expires or the max number of connections?

Go to Settings on the Home Screen then go to Subscription Info.

Is hardwiring the device (Ethernet) better than wifi and will it stop the buffering?

It’s something you can try and see if it makes a difference but usually will not. Many people
have the misconception that speed cures all, it doesn’t. If your getting 25-30 mbps (40 for 4k),
then you should have plenty of speed. If your wifi is not reliable and drops signal, Ethernet will
help a lot. If you have a bad playlist, not much at all you can do to stop the buffering. It also
depends on how many devices are on your network at the same time, this includes phones,
tablets, security systems, and other streaming devices. Go to each streaming device and force
close all apps, then try it again.
I only use wifi and have never hard wired anything. I did try connecting to Ethernet to test my
setup, but I actually got better speed through my wifi.

Why can’t my Smarters play movies or TV series?

You must have a provider that includes VOD. If you have the option for movies and/or TV series
but they won’t play, try using an external player.

Sometimes I have channels disappear or channels or groups randomly added, what I’m I
doing that causes this?

The provider has probably updated his service and may have removed some channels, added
channels, or even add or remove entire groups. This is not because of something you did..

My Smarters app disappeared from my device, how do I get it back?

If you are using a FireTV device, the Auto Offload is probably doing it. Go to your device
settings, then to applications, scroll down to Auto Offloaf and turn it off. You should be able to
go to your applications, then to App Library and be able to find it there. Click on it and it should
reload with all your setting still intact.

When I update my provider it says failed to update and to check my internet connection
but everything else is working, why won’t my playlist update?

The playlist may have expired, the providers server could be down, or the provider has changed
the log in credentials. If it continues to fail after a day or two, either delete it or contact the
provider.

What is the best playlist format, m3u, Xtream, or Stalker.

This is only how you log into the providers server, has nothing to do with content or quality.

How many playlists can I put in Smarters?

There isn’t a limit, but the more you add, the more of your free storage will be used. Each
playlist won’t add much, but it will eventually add up. It can also slow down the updating of
playlists and EPGs and possibly make navigating through the app a little sluggish. If you do
have multiple playlists, it’s best to only have about 4-5 enabled and the rest disabled. If you
need any of the others, just enable them as needed.

Why would I need more than one playlist?

You may get lucky and find that one very good provider that you can depend on, but, IPTV is
inherently undependable for many reasons. It’s always best to keep more than one playlist so
you always have a backup.
