What I Need to Know

This module will help and guide you on how to convert one unit of
measurement to another. It will also help you master the conversion of
English System of Measurement to Metric System of Measurement or vice
versa, and its application to real life situations.

After going through this module, you are expected to convert

measurements from one unit to another in both Metric and English systems
(M7ME-IIb-1). Specifically, you will:
1. state the steps in converting unit of measurement to another
unit,
2. convert Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa, and the unit of
time,
3. create your own schedule in managing your time.

Conversion of unit of Measurements for Time and
Temperature

Time and temperature are important in our daily lives. The hotness and
the coldness depend on the time of the day. During early morning and
evening we can feel its coldness and during noon time we can feel the
increase of its temperature. In the Philippines, we have two seasons every
year. The dry season (summer) reaches up to 45 – 47 °C temperature while
wet season (rainy) drops its average temperature up to 20°C.

5
What is It

Measurement of Time
Time is measured by the rotation of the Earth on its axis which is
equivalent to a whole day and the revolution of the earth around the sun
which is equivalent to one year or 365 ¼ days. Every four years, a day is
added to account for the ¼ day in excess each year. Such year with 29 days
in February is called a leap year.
The following shows the units used to measure time with their
corresponding equivalent factor.
Measures of Time

60 s = 1 min. 365 days = 1 yr.

60 min. = 1 hr. 366 days = 1 leap yr.
24 hrs. = 1 day 10 yrs. = 1 decade
7 days = 1 week 20 yrs. = 1 score
4 weeks = 1 mo. 100 yrs. = 1 century
12 mos. = 1 yr. 1000 yrs. = 1
millennium

Before we proceed to conversion, let us understand first the concept on unit

fraction because it plays a significant role in conversion of measurements.

Unit Fraction is a fraction where the numerator and the denominator have
different units and the value is always equal to 1.

Examples of Unit Fractions

⥘ th th h ㅳ h
t t t t
th ⥘ th h ㅳ h

When we multiply fractions and there are the same units in the numerator and
denominator, we always get a value equal to 1 and we use the term “cancel
out” to simplify our answer as shown below:

6
⥘ th Notice that there is a unit common
thh
th to both numbers which is “days”
⥘ th Multiply 2 and 24 and cancel out
thh
th “day” as unit then use the
remaining units in the given which
is hrs.
⥘ th ⥘h th Answer

To clearly understand the concept of conversion, try to read the examples

below.

Example 1. How many seconds are there in 1 day?

Step 1:
day
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. seconds
Step 3:
⥘ th
Find the conversion factor/s that will
th
convert the starting unit to ending unit.

Using the fractional form the unit you t

want to end will be the numerator the
unit to be cancelled will be the
hᦙ䁡 h

denominator.

Step 4: Set up mathematical expression ⥘ th hᦙ䁡 h

so that all units except the unit you want 1 day x th
x
t
x

to end with, will not be cancelled. = 86,400 seconds

Step 5: Final answer 86,400 seconds

Therefore, 1 day = 86,400 seconds

Example 2. How many hours are there in a year?

Step 1:
year
Identify the unit you are starting with.

7
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. hours
Step 3:
Find the conversion factor/s that will ⥘ th
convert the starting unit to ending unit. th

‫ و‬thh
Using the fractional form, the unit you
hᦙtt
want to end will be the numerator and
the unit to be cancelled will be the
denominator.
Step 4: Set up mathematical expression ‫ و‬thh ⥘ th
1 year x x
hᦙtt th
so that all units except the unit you want
to end with, will not be cancelled. = 8,760 hours
Step 5: Final answer 8,760 hours
Therefore, 1 year = 8,760 hours

Measures of Temperature

Temperature is the measurement of the degree of hotness or coldness

of an object or substance. It commonly uses the units of Celsius (°C) for the
Metric System and Fahrenheit (°F) for the English system. The base SI unit
for temperature is Kelvin (K). Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit which are
considered degrees, Kelvin is considered as an absolute unit of measurement
and therefore can be worked on algebraically. Here are some conversion
factors.

Conversion Formula
for Temperature

°F = °C + 32.
‫و‬
‫و‬
°C = (°F – 32).

K = °C + 273.15

8
Example 1. Convert 27°C to degree Fahrenheit
Step 1:
°C
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. degree Fahrenheit
Step 3:
°F = °C + 32
Find the conversion factor/s or formula ‫و‬

Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression

°F = (27) + 32
so that all units except the unit you want ‫و‬

to end with, will not be cancelled. = 48.6 + 32

°F = 80.6 or 80.6°F
Step 5: Final answer °F = 80.6 or 80.6°F
Therefore, 27°C = 80.6°F

Example 2. Convert 95°F to degree Celsius.

Step 1:
°F
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. degree Celsius
Step 3: ‫و‬
°C = (°F – 32)
Find the conversion factor/s or formula
‫و‬
°C = (95 – 32)
Step 4: Set up mathematical expression
so that all units except the unit you want ‫و‬
°C = (63)
to end with, will not be cancelled.
°C = 35 or 35°C
Step 5: Final answer °C = 35 or 35°C
Therefore, 95°F= 35°C

Example 3. Convert 14°F to K.

Step 1: °F

9
Identify the unit you are starting with.
Step 2:
Identify the unit you want to end with. K
Step 3: ‫و‬
°C = (°F – 32)
Find the conversion factor/s or formula
K = °C + 273.15
Since there is no conversion from
°F to K, we will convert first °F to °C
to K.
Solution:
°F to °C
‫و‬
°C = (°F – 32)
Step 4: Set up Mathematical expression
so that all units except the unit you want ‫و‬
= (14° – 32)
to end with, will not be cancelled.
°C = - 10

°C to K
K = °C + 273.15
= -10 °+ 273.15
K = 263.15°
Step 5: Final answer K = 263.15°
Therefore, 14°F = 263.15°

2. 34°C = _______ °F.

3. 94.6°F = _______ °C.
4. 80°F = _______ °C.
