 Based on the understanding of this part, ask th participants that what
is poverty? Based on some reflections from them, ask them who
gives a person poverty? Based on the reflection, tell them that
poverty is self inflicted, and it is not given to only Africans or some
people rather it is the result of ones effort.. Using the slide, tell them
that if they undertake defined activities, they can create wealth and
to do so, the time for change is now with defined activities.
 Using the next slide, ask them about the origin of poverty, and
strongly express that poverty is the hard copy of once thinking (the
soft copy part) which prints what is ordered. What the mind thinks is
acted up on by hand and the hardcopy. To overcome this, tell them
that they have to think what is possible starting from today and think
what value they can create so that they can create wealth for
themselves, the community and the nation. This is how enterprising
can increase the GDP and national competitiveness if
individuals/citizens take action to bring change.
 Use the two quotes , including attitude, and tell them that if they
start thinking that their standard of living today is not what they
deserve and they can do more and change even the life of others.
Create an attitude of “ Should not stay in the comfort zone, this life
is not what I deserve, and I can change if I take action today”!
 Based on the motivation using previous slide, let them sign contract
with themselves to change their life starting from today, and tell
them that it is their personal responsibility to fulfill their promise in
their own life.
 Set a time table and ground rule before going to tea break
Some additional notes
There are actually three social maps three theories of
determinism widely accepted ,independently or in combination ,
to explain the nature of man . Genetic determinism basically
says your grandparents did it to you . That’s why you have such
a temper. your grandparents had short tempers and it’s in your
DNA . It just goes through the generations and you inherited it. It is
like saying if you are Ethiopian people that is how Ethiopians act
Psychic determinism basically says your parents did it to
you . your upbringing, your childhood experience essentially
laid out your upbringing , your childhood experience essentially
laid out your personal tendencies and your character structure .
That’s why you’re afraid to be in front of a group . It’s the
way your parents brought you up. You feel terribly guilty if you
make a mistake because you “remember” deep inside the
emotional scripting when you were very vulnerable and tender
and dependent . you “remember” the emotional punishment , the
rejection ,the comparison with somebody else when you didn’t
perform as well as expected.
Environmental determinism basically says your boss is
doing it to you or your spouse , or that bratty teenager , or
your economic situation , or national polices. Someone or
something in your environment is responsible for your
situation.
Each of these maps is based on the stimulus /response
theory we most often think of in connection with pavlov’s
experiments with dogs. The basic idea is that we are
conditioned to respond in a particular way to particular
stimulus.

Stimulus Response

How accurately and functionally do these deterministic maps

describe the territory?
How clearly do these mirrors reflect the true nature of man?
Do they become self –fulfilling prophecies? Are they based on
principles we can validate within ourselves?
Internal locus of control means that control comes from within. You
have personal control over your own behavior. When you have an
internal locus of control, you believe you have personal agency over
your own life and actions. Because of this, these people tend to have
more self-efficacy. Being proactive on the other hand means
thinking about the future and focusing on the things you can control
instead of all those you cannot. Therefore locus of control is a belief
that one can control the outcomes of one’s action and take personal
responsibility while proactivity brings that belief in to reality by
letting someone to focus on what one can control by knowing what
to happen in the future. This lets someone to act in advance to deal
with an expected change or difficulty. Please don’t get confused with
the term initiative as initiative is any first move as it pops up while
proactivity is advanced move.
NB: people may have internal locus or external locus of control from the reinforcement
received from the external environment. But proactivity is a thinking that the
environment can’t determine human behavior. The environment can’t be the territory
of human nature. Mankind is naturally proactive but the problem is humans don’t
realized this so far. The concept of Proactivity promotes clear self-awareness. It says let’s
all find our true human nature

 Go to the next slide, and discuss with them about the sources of
finance: internal and external. Us ethe contents on the slide , make it
interactive and discuss. Use the workbook to deepen the discussion
here. These could be in the form of money (financial), or in goods,
products, or services (non-financial).
 ASK or GIVE examples of non-financial resources to
clarify, such as existing goods that you have, or that you
can borrow.

 Explain that after you are clear that the business opportunity you
have selected is profitable, and how much money you need to invest,
it’s time to evaluate where you can get the money from. There are a
variety of sources of funding.
 There are many ways to obtain financing
 Some funding options are more expensive than others
 Money lenders, for example, tend to have much
high costs associated with loans
 Family and friends or community loans may
charge low or no fees.
 It is not necessary to choose a single source of funding.
Sometimes it is preferable to combine options to reach
the total amount needed. For example, for a single project
you could invest some of your own savings, some
funding from family and friends, and seek small loan
from a bank that has products designed for retailers like
you.
 You must analyze which sources of finance are best for
you.
 SAY: Let’s analyze first the least expensive option.

Personal saving
 State: One source of funding is your personal of business’ savings.
 EXPLAIN:
o Financing your startup with own savings is possible if you are
very organized.
o If you have possibility to get small financial support from your
family and if you can put aside some for your start up mindfully.
Maybe you can use this small money you have to collaborate
with others or use it as saving mobilization to secure credit.
What do you think?
 INVITE to share story of someone they know who have secured fund
for on start up through own saving. Show the slide and ask someone to
share the story and ask the rest of the participants to listen attentively as
they analyze the story shortly. If participants could bring up the story
provide your own.
 ASK: What are the benefits of using own savings? Write them on the
flip chart. Expected answers:
 No need to pay interests to anyone
 No requirements
 No cost.
 ASK: What are the disadvantages? Write them on the flip
chart. Expected answers:
 You have to wait until you collect the amount of
money you need
 By using your savings (especially too much) you
are exposing yourself and your business to
additional risk
 Have to be very organized with your money.

Financing your business with credit service providers

 ASK: What is credit? Listen few participants.
 Correct answer: Credit is money that is requested today to be
paid back in the future
 ASK: When does it make sense to go to the bank for credit?
 COLLECT answers.
 EXPLAIN:
 There are moments in "the life of a business" when you
may need to borrow in order to grow.
 Credit requires paying an “interest” which is the cost of
borrowing that money.
 Credit can be very beneficial to a business and a good
alternative or addition to other sources of funding, like
saving and borrowing from family or friends, as long as
the decision is made after thorough analysis.
 ADDRESS any questions before continuing. Tell they will have an
opportunity get experience to discuss with CEO of a financial service
provider – on the opportunity for access to finance for startup
entrepreneurs this afternoon.

 Learning review: Use Q&A method and collect key take ways from the
session. Ask participants write down action for implementation in their
start up context – specifically on how they will get funding based on the
learning in the class.

 Go to the next slide, step 2 and discuss with them on how to

responsible use finance from different sources. Use the workbook
and explain the points stated on the workbook.
 Using the workbook, ask them to exercise as per the workbook about
the 2 questions and let them give reflections. Tell them that the first
question should be kept , and the second is not the right attitude,
since it has consequences of bankruptcy, and more.
 Using the next slide, let them discuss in group of 4-5 people about
mobile money, in 10 minutes. Once they are done, take their
reflections and then summarize with the subsequent slides. Add your
own experience on digital finance as well in terms of cost saving,
time and more.
 Using the workbook about supporting forms/documents, let them go
through the workbook on title : personal note, starting with A.
 Tell them to fill form A: using the market study result (identified
business ideas there) and what complains exist about them based on
their observation. Tell them to use this form after the workshop till
they establish a business.
 Using form B on their workbook about the profitability, tell them to
calculate for the most viable business they chose. Tell them to use
item number 13 and 14 of the market study and they can modify if
they have changed the business idea in the past 4 days.
 Remind them that they can use this form even after they start the
business.

 Tell them that the result of their work depends on how proactive they were and
implemented entrepreneurial behaviors/competence. Tell them that the result is the
direct reflection of their effort.
 Check with the class by asking one by one that whether or not the business was
existent if they can exhibit with some customers/who bought.
 Once you are done, ask them what could have they done to make more revenue and
profit in the last 4 days that they didn’t do? Ask them to list at least 5 things.
 Once they are done, let them reflect on what they could have done. Relate what they
raise with identifying proper opportunity and check for profitability, find the right
information to support their daily business operation, set daily sales/profit goals and
plan accordingly to achieve their objectives, take feedback of their own performance
and improve their results. Tell them these all are related with being Proactive and
taking personal responsibility for own success.
 Ask the one with lowest profit or loss, and ask him/her what happened to their
business. Let them respond to your questions like THE ATTENTion they gave to the
BCE, their daily performance, what they could have done such circumstance, what
they tried to change but didn’t work and what they changed and atleast shows
improvement. Tell them that these will also happen in actual business/regular business
when they start. Stress that this shouldn’t happen in real business and they have to
take lesson. Try seek their response, and also let them reflect on their own behavior,
asking, do you think that If you continue this way, you would end up with successful
business? Obviously the response is yes. So tell them to take a look back to the
competence and the key learnings of the workshop.
 Once you are done with the lowest scorer, go for the one with highest profit. Ask them
to share what contributed to the BCE success. Listen to them and probe in a way it
captures the competencies: opportunity identification, information seeking, proper
market study, goal setting (if they set objective of the 4 days BCE in terms of profit or
related), Planning, and related topics they have learnt. Above all, link with proactivity
and taking personal initiative for own and business success.
 Finally, ask what they have learnt from both stories: no profit vs highest profit,. In a
way it leads to taking initiative, proactiveness determines success.
 Tell them that the true failure is not doing anything at all since they can’t learn from.
Build their self-confidence that they have still time if they have learnt from the
workshop and what they have tried. Tell them to demonstrate on the business they are
going to establish, by learning both from success and failure during their stay.
 Finally let them recognize how they impact their life and the country in terms of
business, using the total revenue of a year. Tell them that if they score the revenue of
this much with their little daily effort, what will happen when they use their full effort
and engage fully in their business. Tell them that this how individuals could grow in
business, and expand their business, hire more citizens, pay more taxes, and improve
the life of larger publics. Conclude and congratulate the winner and take a photo in
front of the group. There is NO AWARD, since the profit itself is an award due to the
conducive environment created.
