Poverty is on the rise in the suburbs. Montgomery County is part of that


trend, with the number of people in poverty in 2010 growing to an
estimated 7.5 percent the highest poverty rate in two decades. The county
continues to be a magnet for new residents, many of whom emigrate from
other countries. Recent arrivals often fill service and construction jobs, a
sector hard hit by the two recessions of the last decade. Yet, that group will
be well-positioned to take advantage of economic recovery.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

The rate of poverty in Montgomery County increased from 6.7 percent in 2009 to 7.5
percent in 2010, totaling 72,259 residents. This is the highest poverty rate in two
decades.

Between 2009 and 2010, the number of residents in poverty increased by 11.8
percent, adding over 7,600 people.
The increase of Montgomery County residents in poverty since the recession accounts
for 24.1 percent of the states increase.

STATE

In 2010, about 560,000 people in Maryland lived in poverty, an increase of 50,796


people from the previous year.
The states poverty rate increased by less than one percent, from 9.2 percent in 2009 to
9.9 in 2010.

Thirteen percent of Maryland residents living in poverty reside in Montgomery County.


Maryland tied Connecticut and New Jersey for the second lowest poverty rate of all states.
Virginia is tied for 6th lowest at 11.1 percent.

In 2010, 8.7 percent some 352,000 residents lived in poverty in the District of
Columbia and surrounding large counties. (Fairfax, Montgomery and Prince George's).
In 2010, Montgomery County contained 20.5 percent of people living in poverty within
these jurisdictions. This represents a 5-percent increase over 2005 (15.5%), and a 3.9point increase over 2007 (16.6% ). The County is gaining share of the region's poor
population. The quality of the school system, access to transit, and the network of
community services all contribute to the county being an attractive place for people
of all income levels to live.
ANNUAL POVERTY RATE, 1989 - 2010

About 15.3 percent of the nations population lived in poverty in 2010.


The national poverty estimate increased by 2.3 percentage points from
2007 to 2010.
23 percent of all counties nationally had significant increases in poverty
between 2007 and 2010.
