UNIT LEARNING PLAN

Subject: Science Grade Level: 3
Chapter Topic: Characteristics of Matter Quarter:1
EXPLORE
LESSON 1: Describing Materials Chapter Introduction and Overview:
Based on Their Characteristics In this lesson, we embark on an exploration of materials and their diverse
characteristics. Materials surround us in every aspect of daily life, from the
CONTENT STANDARD: clothes we wear to the buildings we inhabit. Understanding these materials
understands that materials can be begins with identifying and describing their unique properties. Through
classified based on observable and observation and experimentation, we will uncover the physical and chemical
measurable properties including attributes that define different materials. By the end of this chapter, students will
color, textures, hardness, flexibility gain a deeper appreciation of how material properties influence their functionality
and ability to conduct heat or and suitability for various purposes, setting the stage for further exploration into
electricity the world of science and engineering.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: You will learn to:

conducts simple experiments to  identifies some objects around and observe their characteristics
observe these properties, and  describes different objects based on their observable properties (shape,
accurately records and explains weight, volume etc.)
their observations.  demonstrates that matter has mass and volume
 develops the ability to measure and quantify observable properties such
as shape, weight, volume, and fluidity of objects accurately using
appropriate tools and units of measurement.
 compare and contrast different objects based on their observable
properties, identifying similarities and differences among objects with
similar or different materials.
 designs and conducts simple experiments to demonstrate the concepts
that matter has mass and volume.

Hook Activity: Mystery Box

Instructions:
1. The teacher will prepare a Mystery Box.
2. The students will observe and predict what materials are inside of the
mystery box using their senses (touch, sight, smell, and hearing).
3. They will record their observations about the texture, weight (if
applicable), and any other notable features of the material inside the
box.
4. After everyone has completed their observations, students will engage in
a discussion to compare predictions and identify the actual materials
inside each bag.

Essential Question:
"How can we classify natural materials based on their observable
characteristics?"

Map of Conceptual Change Activity for Students’ Prior/New Knowledge:

Students will show their initial answer to the EQ with the use of KWHL Chart.

LESSON 1: DESCRIBING MATERIALS BASED ON THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

Date: July 23-25, 2024
LEARNING COMPETENCY FIRM-UP (ACQUISITION)
LC1 (A) Activity 1. Nature Walk
Identify some objects around and Go around the schoolyard with the learners and have them list five things
observe their characteristics they see, smell, and feel. Let the learners observe and write the corresponding
characteristics of each object in the chart.

Learning Target(s): Objects Color Shape Texture Weight/Mass Space it can

I can identify some objects around (Light or Heavy) occupy (Big or
me and observe their Small)
characteristics

Success Criteria:
In my identification materials, I can:
1. Identify and describe five natural
materials accurately based on
observable characteristics. Learning Resources/Materials/Handout/Worksheet: Science Links Teachers
2. Classify materials based on Resource Material. (2020)

their classifications
3. Communicate observations and
classifications clearly and support
them with evidence from the walk.

LC2 (A)
Describes different objects based
on their observable characteristics Activity 2. Pick me!

Learning Target(s): Instruction: In this activity, you will observe the objects you have listed in activity
I can describe different objects 1. Then pick one and show it to your classmate. You will describe the object
based on their observable based on its properties: color, shape, size, texture, and use. State your reason
characteristics why you chose the object.

Success Criteria
In my description, I can:

1. Observe each object

attentively, noting details
such as color, shape, size,
texture, and any distinctive
features.
2. Provide a clear and
detailed description of the
object they chose, covering
its color, shape, size
relative to others, texture
(e.g., smooth, rough), and
any notable features.

LEARNING COMPETENCY DEEPEN (MAKE MEANING)

LC3 (M) Activity 2 Play-Clay Exploration
Prove that matter has mass and Introduction:
volume In this hands-on activity, we will delve into the fascinating world of clay
Learning Target(s): to understand two fundamental properties: mass and volume. Through
experimentation and observation, we will explore how different shapes and sizes
I can prove that matter has mass of clay pieces affect these properties. By the end of this session, you'll not only
and volume have a better grasp of mass and volume but also gain insights into their
importance in everyday measurements.

Materials Needed:
Success Criteria:
In my proof, I am able to: 1. Clay (preferably in different colors)
1. Accurately measure or estimate 2. Ruler or measuring tape
both mass and volume of each 3. Balance or scale (if available, otherwise approximate measurements can

mass based on size and density (e.g., larger pieces generally
have more mass).
3. Measuring Volume:
o For measuring volume, use a ruler or measuring tape to
measure the dimensions of each piece of clay (length, width,
and height for regular shapes). Alternatively, shape the clay into
simple geometric shapes (e.g., spheres, cubes) and use the
formulae for the volume of these shapes to estimate volume.
4. Record the mass and volume (or estimates) of each piece of clay.
5. Discussion:
Lead a discussion about the relationship between mass and volume:

o Ask participants which piece of clay they think has the most
mass? Which one has the most volume?
o Discuss the difference between mass and weight (if relevant),
and why it's important to measure both.
o Emphasize that mass is the amount of material in an object,
while volume is the amount of space it occupies
