Introduction
M/s.BMK Private Limited, Hyderabad, has taken-up a project on “Geotechnical
investigation for proposed water works & tubewell locations, Site location – Proposed water
works Site Zone – 1B, Area & Land mark – Haibargaon Near Conservator of forest.”
Groundwater a dynamic resource plays an important role as it can be explored and used in
situ or as potable water. Hence, a detailed and comprehensive evaluation of the availability of
ground water resources in space and time is essential for sustainable development of Nagaon
region of Nagaon District to cope with urbanization process. Nagaon district is situated in the
central portion of Assam and is represented by a vast plain with small hills on northern,
southern and eastern parts. Nagaon is the district headquarters. It is one of the largest districts
of Assam. Together with Morigaon district, it has the shape of a broken dish.
It is located at 90045' E- longitudes and 260 21‟ N- latitudes. The total geographical area of
the district is 383100 ha. The mighty Brahmaputra flows along the northern periphery of the
district. Other major tributaries like Kalong, Kapili and Jamuna are flowing across the district.
Southern part of the district is surrounded by hill district of Karbi Anglong and in the western
and eastern side is lies Morigaon and Golaghat district, respectively. The district head quarter
town is 123 km away from the state capital Guwahati and is a vital corridor linking the upper
Assam district of Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and the northern Assam
district of Sonitpur, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji as well as states like Arunachal Pradesh,
Nagaland and Manipur. Nagaon is well connected by roads, rail and river.
This natural resource is expressed as the quantity of water measured by the difference
between optimum and minimum water table within the underground aquifer. The annual
periodic fluctuation of underground water table results for the natural annual hydrologic cycle
where groundwater-yielding aquifer is principally recharging in monsoon period from rainwater
leaving behind of useable dynamic groundwater resource for the rest of year.
For the assessment of ground water, it is necessary to map the aquifer by several geoscientific
methods before the extraction. Vertical Electrical Survey, is one of the
