• The graph of a polynomial function is
CONTINUOUS.
• It has no breaks, gaps or holes.
• Its DOMAIN is the set of real numbers.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
2. What will happen to the graph of the function if
its degree increases its value?
3. What is the effect to the graph of the function if
the value of the leading coefficient and the
constant term changes?

Learning Target: I can describe the graphs polynomial functions.

SKETCHING POLYNOMIALS

SKETCHING POLYNOMIALS y
2. Identify the zeros/roots of
the polynomial function and
plot them in the cartesian
plane.
x
NOTE:
x – intercept: represents a zero
of the polynomial function.

Learning Target: I can understand the graphs polynomial functions.

SKETCHING POLYNOMIALS
3. Determine the multiplicities of each zeros/roots. y

MULTIPLICITY OF ROOTS
If r is a zero of even multiplicity, then the
sign of P(x) does not change from one side
to the other side of r. The graph touches
but not crosses the x-axis at r. x

If r is a zero of odd multiplicity, then the

sign of P(x) changes from one side to the
other side of r. The graph crosses the x-axis
at r.

Learning Target: I can understand the graphs polynomial functions.
POINTS TO REMEMBER:
• x – intercept : represents a zero of the polynomial function.
• imaginary roots : cannot be determined using the graph.

TURNING POINT
• A TURNING POINT is a point on the curve that is higher or
lower than all points located nearby.
• The maximum number of turning points on the graph of a
polynomial function of degree n is at most n – 1.

Learning Target: I can understand the graphs polynomial functions.
