Chapter 1
A330/A340: PDU sensorized and non-sensorized
References
Description
Why are sensorized PDUs installed in the ball mat area on basic A330/A340 aircraft?
Is it possible to install non-sensorized PDU's instead of sensorized PDU's, in the ball mat areas?
Change:
The basic A330/A340 aircraft were originally equipped with non-sensorized PDU's PN 2955T100
series throughout both cargo compartments, including ball mat areas. Further to in-service reports
mentioning side impact damage to the PDU's PN 2955T100 series installed in the ball mat area
during loading/unloading operations, it was decided to introduce a sensorized PDU PN 123100-3.
The subject PDU has a photo-electric sensor that, under normal operation, only activates the PDU
when a Unit Load Device (ULD) has moved over, thus preventing the previously reported side
impacts. Please refer to ISI 25.51.00001 for details
PDU's PN 123100-3 were introduced as a standard in the ball mat area through MOD 43882 from
MSN 114 onwards, and were subject to an Airbus retrofit campaign though SB's 25-3039 and 25-
4063 for in-service aircraft.
Additional Note
The PDU's PN 123100-3 and 2955T100 series are not interchangeable. Even if the possibility exists,
in view of the above mentioned change, Airbus does not recommend the installation of PDU PN
2955T100 series in the ball mat areas.
When replacing the rollers on a PDU PN 123100-3, it is not required to remove the complete PDU
from the aircraft.
Chapter 2:
All programs: Roller – Rubber wear
References
ISI 25.50.00107
Symptom:
Goal:
Ensure optimum operation of Cargo Loading System (CLS) with regard to PDU traction
Cause:
The Power Drive Unit (PDU) rollers are made of soft rubber subject to wear during operation life.
The following factors have been identified as main contributors to an early wear to the PDU roller
rubber:
Inspection
In order to assess the operational condition of the PDU rollers, Airbus and the PDU manufacturers
have defined checking criteria and maintenance actions, based on the in-service experience, that
improve the PDU roller efficiency and durability.
Defective cargo PDU's should be returned to the vendor for repair. For PDU roller re-rubbering, the
worn rollers should also be returned to the supplier.
Both recommendations ensure the highest durability/reliability of the PDU's and PDU rollers. In
addition, in order to minimize the roller rubber wear (and avoid roller body damage when the roller
rubber is completely gone), a regular check of the PDU roller wear and cleaning of the PDU area are
necessary.
These recommendations are detailed in ISI 25.50.00107 and covered by the MPD Task ZL-131-
01-1 (AMM TASK 05-21-30-200-801), ZL-151-01-1 (AMM TASK 05-21-50-200-801) for
A330/A340 Family aircraft.
A350 MPD task 502300-00M01-01 (MP A350-A-50-23-XX-05ZZZ-310Z-A).
Additional data, including recommendations for other aircraft types, can be found in ISI
25.50.00107.
Cleaning
It is recommended to ensure the cleanliness of the PDU vicinity - especially underneath the roller -
during the PDU roller check. If necessary, vacuum clean at the PDU area. Cleaning of the local
vicinity should also be performed whenever a PDU is removed or installed.
The cleaning of the cargo compartment and especially of the PDU vicinity is covered by
- A320 Family AMM Task 12-21-12-100-007 "Cleaning of the cargo compartments"
- A330/A340 AMM TASK 12-21-12-100-807-A Cleaning of the Cargo-Compartment

Compartment
- A380 AMM TASK 12-21-12-100-807-A Cleaning of the Cargo Compartments
Please be informed that a video showing the cleaning of the cargo compartments (and thus the
PDU vicinity) and the roller rubber wear check (using gauges) is available on CD titled "A330/A340
Cargo Hold Maintenance" (ref SEE25/94A.8806/04).
Procurement of this CD-ROM can be made by following ISI article 00.00.00170 recommendations.
Re-rubbering
After removal of the worn PDU rollers, purchase orders for re-rubbering of the PDU rollers are to
be submitted to the supplier(s) with the parts which are going to be re-rubbered.
