Dept. Code: EE

No. of pages: 2 Full Marks: 50 Duration: 3.0Hours

Instruction regarding questions

Answer all questions
Figures in the right-hand margin indicate marks.
All symbols carry the usual meaning. Assume a standard value for any
missing data.

Q.No. Questions Marks

1 The following data were obtained from testing of a 50kVA, 5kV/250V, 5

50 Hz, transformer:

OC Test: 250V 2A 120W

SC Test: 150V 10A 600W

a. Draw the equivalent circuit referred to HV side and insert all

parameter values.
b. At what KVA the transformer should be operated for maximum
efficiency? Calculate the value of maximum efficiency for 0.7
leading PF of the load.
c. Find the voltage regulation at 50% of the loading at 0.5 PF
lagging

2 230V dc shunt motor has an armature and field resistance of 0.05 5

ohm and 250 ohm, respectively. The motor takes a current of 4A when
running at no-load. Find the load current at the maximum efficiency
condition, maximum efficiency and starting torque when motor voltage
constant of 0.182 V/rpm.

3 A 415 V, 20 kW dc shunt motor takes 2.5 A when running light load. 5

For an armature resistance of 0.5 ohm, field resistance of 830 ohm
and brush drop of 2 V, find the full-load efficiency.

4 Draw the schematic diagram of a DC shunt motor. Derive and plot 5

Torque vs. Speed relation for DC shunt motor.

1
5 A purely single phase induction motor does not have starting torque 2
but has running torque. Why?

6 Name the various methods of split phase type starting of single phase 5
IM and mention which mode of starting will provide high starting as
well as running torque. Explain the principle of operation of that type
of 1-phase induction motor.

7 A 3-Phase, 400 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor takes a power input 5

of 40 kW at its full-load speed of 1452 r.p.m. The total stator losses
are 2 kW and the friction and windage losses are 1.4 kW. Calculate (a)
slip (b) rotor ohmic losses (c) shaft power (d) shaft torque and (e)
efficiency.

8 Show that the maximum internal torque developed by a 3-phase 3

induction motor does not depend on the rotor circuit resistance. What
is slip-speed?

9 A 3φ, 5 kVA, 208 V, four-pole, 60 Hz, star-connected synchronous 5

machine has negligible stator winding resistance and a synchronous
reactance of 8 ohms per phase at rated terminal voltage. The machine
is first operated as a generator in parallel with a 3φ, 208 V, 60 Hz
power supply.
a. Determine the excitation voltage and the power angle when the
machine is delivering rated kVA at 0.8 PF lagging. Draw the
phasor diagram for this condition.
b. If the field excitation current is now increased by 20 percent
(without changing the prime mover power), find the stator
current, power factor, and reactive kVA supplied by the
machine.

10 A synchronous motor is drawing 50 A from 400 V, three-phase supply 5

at unity pf with a field current of 0.9 A. The synchronous reactance of
the motor is 1.3 Ω.
(a) Find the power angle.
(b) With the mechanical load remaining constant, find the value of the
field current which would result in 0.8 leading power factor. Assume
linear magnetization.

11 How the power factor can be controlled in case of alternator for 5

constant power load? Explain with help of phasor diagram along with
Ia and PF verses Eg for different loads.

Wish you all the Best
