Assessment Instructions:

1. Please familiarise yourself with the EIT Academic Honesty and Misconduct Policy, in order to
understand your requirements and responsibilities as a student of EIT.

2. Please refer to our Assessment, Moderation and Student Progress Procedure for
information relating to extensions. Extension requests should be submitted to your LSO at
least 3 days prior to the due date.

3. Assessments submitted via email will not be accepted.

4. Assessments must be submitted through Turn-it-in (unless otherwise stated).

Your submission must:

a. Be a single document (Word or PDF only)

b. Include at least 20 words of machine-readable text, and

c. Not exceed 10MB.

5. You must use the provided assessment cover page available on your Moodle student
homepage. Submissions without a cover page will not be accepted.

6. You must correctly title your document/s. For example:

UNIT#_ASSESSMENT#_YOURNAME_DATE
E.g. ME501_Assessment2_SteveMackay_01Aug2019

7. You must reference all content used from other sources including course materials, slides,
diagrams, etc. Do not directly copy and paste from course materials or any other resources.
Refer to the referencing section of the EIT eLibrary on Moodle for referencing guides.

Unit code and name: MEE512: Power System Safety and Protection

Assessment #: 2B

Assessment type: Report

Weighting: 25%

Total marks: 100 marks

Please complete your answers on the assessment cover page document available on Moodle.
Clearly label your question numbers (there is no need to copy the full question over). Include all working
out.

Question 1: (15 marks)

The single-line diagram below is a portion of a power system, with specifications given:

The data of the example is as follows:

• CT ratio: 1000/1 A
• Minimum current at which the relay is desired to operate = 900 A
• Overload withstand = 10% above nominal current
• Desired operating time for a fault current of 8000 A is 2.0 seconds.
• High set instantaneous unit should operate at 12,500 A (range 400 –2000% in steps of
100%).
• IDMT relay (normal inverse) with a standard curve is used.

Find out its settings:

a) Time of operation of relay
b) TMS
c) PSM

Question 2: (15 marks)

Explain what factors should be considered in the specifications of auxiliary CTs.

Question 3: (20 marks)

A CT has a class of 10P 200F20 on a ratio of 400/1, the CT secondary winding resistance is 2 ohm
and there is no turn correction.
What is the minimum permissible magnetizing impedance at the limit of performance of the CT, i.e.
@ 20a secondary current with derived burden?

Question 4: (15 marks)

What are the advantages of numerical (digital) relaying?

Question 5: (10 marks)

What are the essential requirements for PLUG SETTING of IDMT relay?

Question 6: (15marks)
Explain what factors improves an earthing system?

Question 7: (10 marks)

Assume that a CT has a rated current ratio of 500/5 A. The impedance of the secondary wiring is Z2
= 0.424 Ω and the burden impedance is Zb = 0.351 Ω. The core area is A = 0.00193 m2. The CT must
operate at maximum primary current of 10 kA. If the frequency is 60 Hz and the core is built from
silicon steel.
a) Determine whether or not the CT will saturate. (5 marks)
b) Determine the CT error. (5 marks)
