GENG3402/4402 Assignment 1

Weighting: 5%
Due Time/Date: 23:59 AWST Thursday Week 4, 15th August 2024

Assignment 1 includes the following two parts:

Part One: Consider a mechanical or electrical or chemical engineering system that uses an open-loop control
system.
• Describe the system’s functionality and behaviour in the real world.
• Sketch the open-loop control system block diagram with brief description. Label all details, including
input/output signals of all the modules.
• Analyse and state the disadvantages of using an open-loop control system for the mechanical or
electrical or chemical engineering system selected.
Part Two: Consider a mechanical or electrical or chemical engineering system that uses a closed-loop control
system.
• Describe system’s functionality and behaviour in the real world.
• Sketch the closed-loop control system block diagram with brief description. Label all details, including
input/output signals of all the modules.
• Determine differential equation(s) and the transfer function with details.
• Analyse and state the advantages of using a closed-loop control system for the mechanical or electrical
or chemical engineering system selected.
The systems selected in Part One and Part Two may come from different real-world engineering applications;
they do not need to be similar or related to each other.

Instructions:
• Plagiarism is not tolerated. This assignment must be your own work.
• Proper References and citations are required.
Visit: https://guides.library.uwa.edu.au/referencinguwa/styles if you need assistance on the
referencing styles.
• The selected systems cannot be the existing examples, exercises, demonstrations found from standard
control engineering textbooks or/and any online resources.
• Your report should include not only the application of engineering systems in the real world, but also
descriptions of the system (system modules), schematic diagrams, derivation of differential equations,
transfer functions, discussion and analysis.
• Prepare your report in the standard format: A4 size pages with 2 cm margins, font size 12, and single
line spacing. The report should not exceed 3 pages in length, including all content including table of
content, tables/figures, equations, references, etc; but excluding the assignment coversheet.
Submission:
• Submit a softcopy group report of assignment 1 through “Assignment One Report” submission portal
under “Group Assignments” section of your assignment group page on LMS before due time/date;
• Submission must be ONE single pdf format file containing (1) a complete and signed assignment
coversheet; and (b) the complete group report.
• This is a group-based assignment. Each group needs to submit one report only. All group members are
supposed to contribute equally.
