Marine auxiliary boiler is an important and critical machinery in the engine room of a merchant navy

vessel. The boilers which are provided onboard the oil tankers are high pressure boilers and this high
pressure steam (16K) is used for driving the COPT’s ( Cargo oil pump turbines ). This same boiler can also
be used in a low pressure mode (6k) to provide low pressure steam, which is used for auxiliary purposes
like heating steam for fuel oil tanks and in the hot water calorifier. There will be two auxiliary boilers
provided on the oil tankers.

Normally have only one low pressure auxiliary boiler, which supplies auxiliary steam for heating
purposes.

These boilers are shut down from time to time to carry out the maintenance jobs on these boilers. This
includes jobs like boiler furnace inspection, boiler furnace cleaning, boiler survey, any major leak
rectification on the steam line. To carry out these jobs the boiler must be cooled down completely.
Starting the boiler again after carrying out the repairs is called as starting the boiler from cold condition.

Procedure of starting the boiler from cold condition :

Boilers can not be started just like that from the cold condition because this can develop
thermal stresses in the boiler, which can lead to a major breakdown and could be fatal for the engine
room crew. To avoid this a special procedure is followed, the procedure is as follows,

1) Confirm that the vent valve of this perticular boiler is open.

2) Make sure that the MGO ( Marine Gas Oil ) tank for the boiler is topped up.
3) Make sure that boiler feed pump and MGO circulating pump is running in the auto mode.

4) Now, fire the boiler in manual mode for 30 seconds and stop the boiler. During this firing period
check the boiler parameters and observe for any leaks.

5) Now wait for atleast one hour.

6) Repeat the procedure explained in point 4 and point 5 for 2-3 times.

7) If everything goes well then we can increase the firing time to 60 seconds and reduce the
stoppage interval to 40 minutes.

8) Check the boiler parameters and observe for any leaks.

9) Repeat the procedure explained in point 7 and point 8 for 2-3 times.
10) If everything goes well then we can further increase the firing time to 90 seconds and reduce the
stoppage interval to 20 minutes.
10) Keep on continuing like this untill the boiler pressure reaches to 2 bars. At this point the
steam must be coming out of the vent valve, now close the boiler vent valve.

11) Now, we can increase the firing time to 2 minutes and reduce the stoppage interval to 10
minutes. Repeat this step untill the boiler pressure reaches to 5 bars.

12) Afterwards we can put the boiler in auto mode.

13) After confirming with the Chief Engineer once the required fuel oil temperature is reached
we can change over the boiler to HFO ( Heavy fuel oil ) mode
From MGO ( Marine Gas Oil ) mode.

14) In this way we can start the boiler from the cold condition.
