BIOLOGY LESSON NOTE WEEK 1

CLASS: SS 2
PEROID 1
TOPIC: CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES
SUB-TOPIC: MEANING AND NEED FOR CONSERVATION
Conservation is defined as the planned or controlled exploitation or judicious use of natural
resources to ensure their continuous availability and to preserve the quality or original
nature of the environment.
Natural resources can be renewable or nonrenewable.
* Renewable natural resources are natural resources that are recoverable. Examples are
rain, animals, plants, water, air, food and soil.
* Nonrenewable natural resources are natural resources that are not recoverable or
replaceable. Examples are mainly mineral resources like petroleum, coal, tin and copper.
NEED OR REASONS FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

1. To allow the continued use of natural resources for man's benefit.

2. To preserve rare and valuable species of plants and animals for future generation.

3. To preserve naturally beautiful sceneries for their aesthetic values.

4. To prevent the destruction of natural ecosystem.

5. To promote the recycling of some scarce resources such as water.

METHODS OF CONSERVING NATURAL RESOURCES

Methods of conserving Wildlife

1. Establishment of game or forest reserves

2. Establishment of zoological gardens

3. Control of hunting to prevent extinction of some animal species.

4. Prohibition of killing or poaching of animals in game reserves

5. Prohibition of bush burning to avoid displacement of wildlife.

6. Prohibition of deforestation and encouragement of afforestation.

Endangered Species: These are organisms that have become depleted or rare due to human
activities or natural disaster.

Methods of conserving water.

1. Trapping or storage of water in tanks wells or reservoirs.

2. Damming of rivers to allow for more effective management of water.

3. Treatment and recycling of used water.

4. Prevention of water pollution.

5. Planting of trees to reduce evaporation and promote water retention.

Methods of conserving Forest.

1. Cutting of trees without destroying the undergrowth

2. Encouraging reafforestation.

3. Prevention of bush burning

4. Prevention of plant pests and diseases

5. Establishment of forest reserves.

Methods of conserving Soil.

1. Prevention of overgrazing which may cause soil erosion

2. Prevention of indiscriminate deforestation which exposes the soil to erosion.

3. Adoption of better farming practices such as crop rotation.

4. Prevention of land pollution.

5. Prevention of bush burning.

Methods of conserving mineral resources.

1. There should be legislation against indiscriminate mining of mineral resources

2. Effective and efficient extraction methods should be adopted to prevent wastage.

3. Effective and efficient utilization of available mineral resources for man's benefit.

4. Overdependence on a particular mineral resources should be discouraged as this can lead

to the depletion of such resource.
PERIOD 2

TOPIC: CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

SUB-TOPIC: IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURSES

IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

Benefits of Wildlife Resources conservation

1. It provide food for human consumption

2. It generates revenue for government

3. It can serve as tourist center for pleasure and relaxation

4. It provides research work for scientists

5. It can generate employment for some people.

Benefits of Water Resources Conservation

1. It serves as sources of food supply e.g. fish, prawn and crayfish

2. It is used for hydro electric power generation.

3. Water is useful for irrigation

4. Water serves as a medium of transportation

5. Water is used domestically and industrially.

Benefits of Forest Resources conservation

1. Forests are sources of timbers for building and construction purposes

2. Forests provide medicinal herbs

3. Forests are sources of fuel (firewood) used for cooking

4. Forests serve as home for wild animals

5. Forests provide employment for some people

Benefits of Soil Resources conservation

1. Soil supports agricultural activities

2. Soil also supports forest and wildlife resources.

3. It serves as home for some organisms

4. Mineral resources are obtained from the soil

5. Buildings are erected on the soil.

Benefits of Mineral Resources Conservation

1. Mineral resources provide fuel such as coal, petroleum and natural gas.

2. They are used for construction purposes e.g. iron, zinc, copper and aluminum.

3. Some are used for ornamental purposes e.g. gold, silver and diamond

4. Minerals are used for foreign exchange

5. They also provide employment, e.g. miners, drillers and marketers.

WAYS OF ENSURING THE CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

1. Establishment of agencies for conservation. Such agencies are:

* Nigeria Conservation Foundation

* Forest Departments

* Federal Environmental Protection Agency

* River Basin Development Authority

* Department of Wildlife Conservation

2. Establishment of game reserves and national parks.

3. Making of conservation laws, edicts or decrees.

4. Educating the public on the importance of natural resources conservation.

5. Setting standards for pollution.

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CONSERVATION

1. Soil erosion caused by natural wind, rainfall and runoff

2. Land, air and water pollution

3. Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods

4. Overgrazing

5. Indiscriminate hunting and bush burning leading to eradication of wildlife and timbers.

6. Problem of oil spillage and other forms of pollution
