Ratio, Proportion & Variation

1. Ratio:

The ratio of two quantities a and b in the same units, is the fraction and we write it as a : b.
In the ratio a : b, we call a as the first term or antecedent and b, the second term or consequent.
5
Eg. The ratio 5 : 9 represents with antecedent = 5, consequent = 9.
9
Rule: The multiplication or division of each term of a ratio by the same non-zero number does not affect the ratio.
Eg.4 : 5 = 8 : 10 = 12 : 15. Also, 4 : 6 = 2 : 3.

2. Proportion:

The equality of two ratios is called proportion.

If a : b = c : d, we write a : b :: c : d and we say that a, b, c, d are in proportion.
Here a and d are called extremes, while b and c are called mean terms.

Product of means = Product of extremes.

Thus, a : b :: c : d (b x c) = (a x d).

i. Fourth Proportional:
If a : b = c : d, then d is called the fourth proportional to a, b, c.
ii. Third Proportional:
a : b = c : d, then c is called the third proportion to a and b.
iii. Mean Proportional:
Mean proportional between a and b are √𝑎𝑏.

3. Comparison of Ratios:
a c
We say that (a : b) > (c : d) > .
b d
4. Compounded Ratio:
The compounded ratio of the ratios: (a : b), (c : d), (e : f) is (ace : bdf).

5. Duplicate Ratios:
Duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a2 : b2).
Sub-duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a : b).
Triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a3 : b3).
Sub-triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a1/3 : b1/3).
a c a +b c+d
If = , then = . [componendo and dividendo]
b d a-b c-d
6. Variations:
We say that x is directly proportional to y, if x = ky for some constant k and we write, x y.
We say that x is inversely proportional to y, if xy = k for some constant k and
1
we write, x .

sum of all values in a set by the total number of values. In other words, an average value represents the middle
value of a data set. The data set can be of anything like age, money, runs, etc.

Time & Work

Time and work deals with the time taken by an individual or a group of individuals to complete a piece of work and the
efficiency of the work done by each of them.

Given below are the basic type of questions which may be asked in the exam with respect to the time and work topic:

 To find the efficiency of a person

 To find the time taken by an individual to do a piece of work
 To find the time taken by a group of individuals to complete a piece of work
 Work done by an individual in a certain time duration
 Work done by a group of individuals in a certain time duration

Important Time and Work Formula

Knowing the formulas can completely link you to a solution as soon as you read the question. Thus knowing the formula for
any numerical ability topic make the solution and the related calculations simpler.Given below are a few such important time
and work formulas for your reference:

 Work Done = Time Taken × Rate of Work

 Rate of Work = 1 / Time Taken
 Time Taken = 1 / Rate of Work
 If a piece of work is done in x number of days, then the work done in one day = 1/x
 Total Wok Done = Number of Days × Efficiency
 Efficiency and Time are inversely proportional to each other
 X:y is the ratio of the number of men which are required to complete a piece of work, then the ratio of the time taken by
them to complete the work will be y:x
 If x number of people can do W1 work, in D1 days, working T1 hours each day and the number of people can do W2
work, in D2 days, working T2 hours each day, then the relation between them will be

===========================================================================================

complete the same work?
(a) 7.5 days (b) 3.6 days (c) 5.4 days (d) 3 days

Time, Speed and Distance
Speed, Time and Distance:
Distance Distance
Speed = , Time = , Distance = (Speed x Time).
Time Speed
km/hr to m/sec conversion:
5
x km/hr = x x m/sec.
18

m/sec to km/hr conversion:

18
x m/sec = x x km/hr.

If the ratio of the speeds of A and B is a : b, then the ratio of

1 1
the times taken by them to cover the same distance is : or b : a.
a b
Average Speed Formula:-
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑
Average speed =
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑛

When the distance is constant: Average speed = 2xy/x+y; Where, x and y are the two speeds at which the same
distance has been covered.

When time taken is constant: Average speed = (x + y)/2; Where, x and y are the two speeds at which we travelled for
the same time.

Relative Speed:-

Relative speed is defined as the speed of a moving object with respect to another. When two objects are moving in
the same direction, relative speed is calculated as their difference. When the two objects are moving in opposite
directions, relative speed is computed by adding the two speeds.

Problem on Trains:-

1. Time taken by a train of length l metres to pass a pole or standing man or a signal post is equal to the time taken by
the train to cover l metres.
2. Time taken by a train of length l metres to pass a stationery object of length b metres is the time taken by the train to
cover (l + b) metres.
3. Suppose two trains or two objects bodies are moving in the same direction at u m/s and v m/s, where u > v, then their
relative speed is = (u - v) m/s.
4. Suppose two trains or two objects bodies are moving in opposite directions at u m/s and v m/s, then their relative
speed is = (u + v) m/s.
5. If two trains of length a metres and b metres are moving in opposite directions at u m/s and v m/s, then:
(a + b)
The time taken by the trains to cross each other = sec.
(u + v)
6. If two trains of length a metres and b metres are moving in the same direction at u m/s and v m/s, then:
(a + b)
The time taken by the faster train to cross the slower train = sec.
(u - v)
7. If two trains (or bodies) start at the same time from points A and B towards each other and after crossing they
take a and b sec in reaching B and A respectively, then:
(A's speed) : (B's speed) = (√b : √a)
