ART FUNCTIONS

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Visual art is more than just creating beautiful objects. Throughout history, art has
served various purposes, influencing our understanding of the world and ourselves. Here are
some of the main functions of visual art:

a. Expression
- Art allows artists to
express their emotions,
ideas, and experiences.
It can be a powerful
tool for personal
exploration and
communication.
b. Communication
- Visual art can
communicate
messages, stories, and
cultural values. It can be used to educate, inform, and persuade viewers.
c. Decoration
- Art can enhance the beauty of our surroundings and create a sense of place. It
can be used to adorn homes, buildings, and public spaces.
d. Ceremony and Ritual
- Art is often used in religious and cultural ceremonies to mark important
events, connect with spiritual beliefs, and honor traditions.
e. Documentation and History
- Visual art can record historical events, preserve cultural practices, and offer
insights into past societies.
f. Social Commentary
- Art can be used to address social issues, challenge the status quo, and promote
social change.
