Sustainable Development Education

Our world, Our life, Our future

Purpose
Our environment is in a constant process of change due to the increasing demands placed on it by commercial enterprise, urbanization, scientific exploration, recreation, agriculture,
mining and an ever-increasing population.

Now, more than any other time in history, is the time to take stock of our situation and take action to ensure the future of our environment and thus our future. We need to understand
the essential elements that the natural environment has that are essential for human survival- food, medicine, clean air and water. We are one piece of the giant web of life that is called
Planet Earth and we need all the pieces to survive.

Kalimantan is facing many devastating environmental problems, which are having a significant impact on the health of the environment- human, animal and native vegetation. The most
significant problems are deforestation, unsustainable farming methods, waste management, economic sustainability and energy conservation. Through the implementation of a
Sustainable Development Education Program, the school will help address the current problems by increasing student and community awareness of the problems and how they can be
dealt with to ensure sustainable development locally, nationally and globally.

The Sustainable Development Education Program is the means by which BCU will educate students and communities to understand environmental issues, human interrelationships
with the environment and empower them to implement an ecologically, environmentally friendly and sustainable way of life.

Partnerships between schools, the wider community and environmental organizations are fundamental to the success of Environmental Education. Therefore BCU is committed to
forming active partnerships in these areas to ensure a comprehensive education program and thus a sustainable future.

Aims
Sustainable Development Education at BCU aims to:
 develop environmentally sustainable practices within the school and community
 develop sustainable agriculture and land management strategies by learning about Permaculture in the school garden
 develop an awareness and understanding of current environmental issues locally and also on national and global levels
 develop an understanding of the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living things
 develop an understanding that humans are not separate to the environment; they are an integral part.
 develop in students the values associated with living in harmony with their surroundings
 develop an understanding that humans are both the problem and the solution to the current environmental crisis
 develop an understanding of the ecological, historical, economic and social factors that have impacted and will continue to impact on the environment in the future.
 develop an awareness of and document the natural medicines that have been used for thousands of years that can be found in the natural environment.

NB: Sustainability needs to be looked at from three perspectives: economic, social and environmental
Topic Focus for Sustainable Development
Curriculum as identified by students and teachers
from each grade level.

Year Level Topic Focus Objectives

Health  Be able to share views on what constitutes an healthy or unhealthy environment
Solutions  Understand that different environments support different living things
 Identify and demonstrate ways to keep the school and community environment
healthy
 Develop good habits for saving resources- e.g. turning off lights, cleaning up etc.
 Begin using Thinking / Working like a Scientist format for projects- Teacher directed

Solutions  Explain why reducing rubbish is good for the environment
 Identify and explain how waste impacts on the environment
 Describe types of pollution and why and how they happen- air, sound, water, soil
 Start using Thinking / Working like a Scientist format for projects more independently-
Teacher as a guide
Grade 4 Plants and Animals  Identify the frequently occurring animals and plants in the environment around the
Extinction / Endangered school.
Solutions  Explain why animals and plants become endangered/ extinct
Human impact- deforestation  Explain what biodiversity is and why it is important
Sustainability  Know how & why particular localities have been effected by human activity
Harmony with nature  Start using Thinking / Working like a Scientist format for projects more independently-
