TEACHER: Ms. Lean Babe T.

Bascones GRADE LEVEL: Grade 8

LEARNING
Earth and Space QUARTER: 2nd Quarter
AREA:
The learner…
• demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between faults and
earthquakes.
• demonstrates an understanding of the formation of typhoons and their
CONTENT STANDARD:
movement within the PAR.
• demonstrates an understanding of characteristics of comets, meteors,
and asteroid.

The learner…
• should be able to participate in decision making on where to build
structures based on knowledge of the location of active faults in the
community; and
• makes an emergency plan and prepared an emergency kit for use at
home and in school.
PERFORMANCE • should be able to demonstrate precautionary measures
STANDARD: before, during, and after a typhoon, including following advisories,
storm signals, and calls for evacuation given by government agencies in
charge; and
• participates in activities that lessen the risks brought by typhoons.
• should be able to discuss whether or not beliefs and practices about
comets and meteors have scientific basis

The learner…
• will understand earthquakes and faults so that in the long run, they will
be able on their own to develop the culture of safety, recognize danger
signs related to earthquakes and heed public warnings and be
empowered for response.
FORMATION
• will be able on their own to heed government warnings of typhoons
STANDARD:
and weather disturbances.
• will understand other members of the solar system so that in the long
run, they will be able on their own to exhibit a questioning attitude and
seek predictability.

COMPETENCIES:

The learner should be able to….

• uses models or illustrations, explain how movements along the faults generate earthquakes;
• differentiates the:
-epicenter of an earthquakes from its focus.
-intensity of an earthquakes from its magnitude.
-active and inactive faults; and
• explains how the earthquakes waves provide information about the interior of the earth.
• explain how typhoons develop
and how affected by landmasses and bodies of water; and
• traces the path of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) using a map and
tracking data.
 compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids.

MODULE 2: LESSON 1: Anatomy of an Earthquake DATE: November 7-11,2022

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: GRADE & SECTION:

• Science 8 Textbook  Grade 8- St. Mechtilde
• Chalk  Grade 8- St. Gertrude
• Power presentation  Grade 8- St. Hildegard
• Television
• Worksheets
TARGET COMPENTENCIES:
 uses models or illustrations, explain how movements along the faults generate earthquakes.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to. . .
KNOWLEDG Define earthquake.
E
SKILLS Explain the movement of earthquakes through its anatomy.

ATTITUDES Create an illustration or model of an earthquake.

LESSON ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
1. How do earthquakes affect the lives of people?
2. Why do earthquakes occur?

Value Focus: Benedictine Hallmark:

 Open-minded  Community
 Care for the Environment  Service
 Promote awareness of natural cause  Stewardship

TEACHING PROCEDURE / STRATEGIES
THE EARTH
Our planet provides us with life and protects us from space. It is a
world unlike any other. It is the third planet form the sun and is the only
place in the universe confirmed to host life. Earth Science is the study of
the Earth and its neighbors in space. It is an exciting science with many
interesting and practical applications. Some Earth scientists use their
knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy and mineral
resources. Why is Earth and Space Science important? It is an integrated
A.
INTRODUCTION study of the Earth’s history, composition, and structure, and its atmosphere
and oceans, and its environment in space. Knowledge of Earth Science is
important because most of human activities are related to interaction with
the planet Earth. Scientists study earthquakes because they want to know
more about their causes and predict where they are likely to happen.
Typhoon travels very fast from one place to another and it is important to
be alert before it comes. Being prepared can reduce fear and anxiety.
People also can reduce the impact of disasters and sometimes avoid the
dangers completely.
Activity 1: Picture Analysis
The teacher will let the students observe the picture and answer the questions that
follow.

EXPLORE

Process Questions:
1. What can you say about the picture?
2. What do you think happened?
3. What might be the causes of this natural disaster?
Discuss how earthquake occur, its anatomy through a powerpoint presentation.
FIRM-UP After the discussion, the teacher will show how a video presentation in relation to
the topic.
