Earth and Life Science
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the learners are expected to:
a. analyze how heat and pressure to create a metamorphic rock;
b. demonstrate how metamorphic rocks are formed; and
c. discuss how the variation of heat and pressure results various metamorphic
rocks
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Concepts
1. "Metamorphism" comes from the Greek: Meta = change, Morph = form, so
metamorphism means to change form. In geology this refers to the changes
in mineral assemblage and texture that result from subjecting a rock to
pressures and temperatures different from those under which the rock
originally formed..
2. The original rock that has undergone metamorphism is called the protolith.
Protolith can be any type of rock and sometimes the changes in texture and
mineralogy are so dramatic that is difficult to distinguish what the protolith
was.
3. Temperature
3.1 Temperature increases with depth in the Earth along the Geothermal
Gradient. Thus higher temperature can occur by burial of rock.
3.2 Temperature can also increase due to igneous intrusion.
4. Pressure increases with depth of burial, thus, both pressure and temperature
will vary with depth in the Earth. Pressure is defined as a force acting equally
from all directions. It is a type of stress, called hydrostatic stress,
or uniform stress.
B. Materials
1. Pictures of Metamorphic rocks 3. Pencils
2. Permanent markers 4. Manila papers

D. Process Skills
1. Explorer
2. Critical thinker
3. Developing self-confidence by expressing individual opinions
E. Values Integration
1. Workmanship
2. Honesty in expressing oneself
A. ENGAGE
(Video Analysis)(The teacher will download videos.)
1. The gathered ideas on videos shown, will be used as basis to start the
lesson.
2. Students will be divided into 5 or 6 groups. Each group will be given one
picture.
Ask them to analyze the picture. List down at least 5 important materials used
in the building construction and design.
B. EXPLORE
Each group will roleplay metamorphism.
C. EXPLAIN
Envoy Strategy. Choose 5 students as envoys and give them topics.
The envoys will rotate to each group and will discuss and explain the topic about
metamorphism assigned to them.

D. ELABORATE
The ideas gathered from the envoy activity will be enhanced by giving a matching
type test.(Suggested Type: Listed in COLUMN A are types of metamorphic
rocks and in COLUMN B are descriptions of components and texture of the
rocks.)
E. EVALUATE
Students are asked to make a diagram or illustration showing metamorphism and
discuss their group output.
(Teacher and students will prepare rubrics as basis point system and the will be
allowed to make a suggestion to it)
Small Group Activity Rubric - Group Participation Rubric
Please make note of both attached rubrics. You will be assessed on how well you meet the following criteria. You will
be given an opportunity to reflect upon your participation as well as that of your group’s performance.
IV. ASSIGNMENT
Each group will be ask to look for least 2(two) different metamorphic rocks in the
community. They will put it in a glass or any medium like a terrarium and label them
with common name; the minerals on it.
