DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

This section of this study presented the gathered data that were analyzed

through the appropriate statistical tools. The data were presented using tables and the

findings were interpreted based on the objectives of the study. The data found in this

chapter were arranged accordingly to the problems stated in the statement of the

problem.

On the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex.

The profile variables of the Grade 12-Hermes students considered in the study

included the following: age and sex. The distribution of the Grade 12-Hermes

students according to their profile variables were shown in the following tables.

Table 4.1 shows the percentage of respondents in terms of age. As shown on the

table, students aged seventeen (17) years old and below got the highest percentage of

66.66% or twenty-six (26) respondents out of thirty-nine (69) students. On the other
hand, lowest percentage is 33.33% or (13) respondents are aged eighteen (18) and

Table 4.2 shows the percentage of respondents in terms of sex. As shown in the table,

the percentage of male respondents is 58.98% with a total of twenty-three (23) Grade

12-Hermes students. The percentage of female is 41.02% with a total of sixteen (16).

It means that male respondents have higher percentage than female.

On the level of impact of mobile phone usage to the academic performance of

Grade 12-Hermes students when taken as a whole or grouped according to their

learning and performance.

In this study, the students were given survey questionnaire to determine the

level of mobile phone usage to the academic performance of Grade 12-Hermes

students when grouped according to learning and performance.

Table 6 shows the responses of the respondents to the questionnaire, “How

is using mobile phones affect your academic performance?”. The table reveals that

most of the students are positively affected by the mobile phone usage to their

academic performance, it distracted them when they’re studying and this also the

reason why students has a low grades and others say that it helps them sometimes in

answering their homework’s in school.

Theme 1: Low Grades

Low grades can be interpreted in several ways. They may reflect a

temporary struggle with a specific subject or topic, a lack of understanding due to

various learning styles, or even personal challenges that are impacting academic

performance.

“My grades decrease”

“I slept late at night that lead me to go to school late, and my teacher do not

allow me to enter in her class”

Low grades have been found to have a negative impact on self-esteem and

academic performance. Several studies have shown that self-esteem is positively

correlated with academic achievement. Students with low grades tend to have lower

self-esteem, which can lead to decreased motivation and engagement in academic

tasks (Figueroa, 2019).

Theme 2: Distraction

Mobile phone is the main reason why most of the students experienced

distraction. They more likely used mobile phone and spend their time using in using it

rather than doing homework’s.

“I get bored in doing school works, so I prefer to use mobile phones”

“It’s disturbance sometimes in my study”

The detrimental effects of academic distraction have become increasingly

problematic in recent years due to student’s media multitasking. In recent years,

educators have gradually transitioned many classes to the online learning

environment, effectively reducing teacher supervision. In an effort to help students

and educators better understand the implications of technology on academic

distraction and academic performance, this literature review discusses the effects of

three forms of technology on student distraction: laptops, smartphones, and social

media use, particularly the social media platform Facebook. While the effects of

student laptops on academic distraction are somewhat ambivalent, the debate us

largely moot in the current educational environment (Dontre, 2021).

Theme 3: Addiction

The addiction of students can manifest in various forms, such as addiction to

technology, social media, video games, or substances. It can have detrimental effects

on their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. Addiction to

technology and social media can lead to decreased focus, poor time management, and

reduced productivity.

“I get addicted to my phone that also lead me to pass my homework’s late”

“It become my addiction that even in my homework’s I searched it in social

media”

The obsessive use of a smartphone has been compared to that of credit card

misuse and compulsive buying. Cellphones have become a representation of social

status and thus, there is pressure to own the newest release and to have all of the best

applications. People suffering from this condition oftentimes have what has been
coined “nomophobia,” or the fear of being without one’s cell phone. Problematic cell

phone users can develop a social media addiction as well, which has a number of

harmful effects on the user (Baylor, 2018).

Theme 4: Lose of Concentration

The loss of concentration among students can stem from various factors. It

may be influenced by excessive screen time, distractions, lack of interest in the

subject matter, fatigue, stress, or underlying mental health issues. Additionally, poor

time management, multitasking, and a lack of proper study environment can

contribute to a decline in concentration. Furthermore, the modern digital age has

introduced a multitude of distractions, making it challenging for students to maintain

focus. Social media, notifications, and constant connectivity can all contribute to

reduced attention span.

“There is a time that I lose concentration in studying because of mobile

phone”

“I can’t able to finish my homework’s and assignment because my attention is

on my phone”

Concentration is one of the most influential decisive factors in student’s level

is, the less concentration they pay in class, especially university students. Owing to

this low level of concentration ability, many lectures find it hard to maintain their

enthusiasm when teaching students from this level, and also those students find it hard

to achieve the best outcome when graduating from university (Pellas, 2014).
