A MOMENT IN HISTORY
On 4th November I arrived in
Chicago late in the evening. I wanted to
photograph Barack Obama and his
family in the Convention Center, but
when I got there, I discovered that I
didn't have my press pass and I
couldn't go inside. I walked around the park outside the center. Although it was
November, it was a warm night.
The atmosphere was wonderful. When I took this photo, everybody was
looking at the TV screens waiting for the election results. Some people were
quietly holdin g hands and smiling - others were tense and nervous. They felt
that it was their moment. Suddenly I realized that this was a better place to be
than inside. I was watching Obama's victory through the faces of all these people,
African, Hispanic, Chinese, white.
At about 11 o'clock the results were announced, and
everybody went mad. People started laughing, shouting,
and crying. But when Obama made his speech, they all
became quiet and emotional. There was only one place
to be on the planet that night - and I was there.

Equality In The Home
Men and women all over the world often argue about
doing housework, and it's usually the women who lose.
However, a recent study by researchers at Oxford
University shows that the situation is slowly improving.
The researchers asked men and women aged between 20
and 59 to keep a diary of how much time they spent on
housework each day. After collecting and analyzing these
diaries, some interesting results emerged. Women in the UK today spend about
four hours and 40 minutes each day doing housework. Men, on the other hand,
spend two hours and 28 minutes on the same tasks. Although women still spend
more time on domestic jobs, the figures show that the situation is improving. In
the 1960s, women spent six hours a day on housework while men only spent 90
minutes.
The study suggests that women are still doing most of the housework because
people still divide domestic jobs into two areas. Cooking, cleaning, and looking
after children are seen as 'women's work', while general repairs, car maintenance,
and outdoor work are considered 'men's work'.
This research also revealed some surprising findings. For instance, some men
admitted that they actually enjoy cooking and cleaning! However, due to societal
expectations, they tend to avoid these tasks. Maybe as these expectations start to
change, we will see a more equal sharing of household chores.
Overall, the results of the study bring good news for women. The difference
between the amount of time men and women spend on housework is getting
smaller every year. This means that the time will come when both sexes share
domestic chores equally. However, women will have to be extremely patient, as
this change won't be complete for another four decades!
In the meantime, perhaps we can find ways to make housework more enjoyable.
Who knows, maybe in the future, housework will become
a source of pleasure rather than a chore!

friends. When they are asked, 'Did you have a good weekend?' they don't like to
say that they just stayed at home and watched TV, because it sounds boring. So
they invent the details. The most common lie that people told was 'I went out on
Saturday night', when really they didn't go anywhere. Other common lies were 'I
had a romantic meal', 'I went to a party', and 'I went away for the weekend'.
In fact, in the survey, 30% of people who answered the questions said that
they spent their weekend sleeping or resting because they were so tired at the end
of the week.
Another 30% said that they needed to work or study at the weekend.
Psychologist Corinne Sweet says that people often don't tell the truth about their
weekend 'because we don't want to feel that everyone else is having a better time
than us, if we have had a boring weekend doing housework, paperwork, or just
resting after a tiring week at work'. She also believes that networking sites such
as Facebook and Twitter may be encouraging us to invent details about our
social lives.
People can create an illusion of who they want to be and the life they want
to live,' says Corinne, and of course they want that life to seem exciting.

THE FISHERMAN AND THE BANKER
An American banker was on holiday abroad. He was walking on a beautiful

The American interrupted him. 'I have an MBA from Harvard University
and I can help you. You're not fishing as much as you can. If you start fishing for
longer periods of time, you'll get enough money from selling the fish to buy a
bigger boat. Then with the money you'll get from catching and selling more fish,
you could buy a second boat, and then a third one, and so on. Then instead of
selling your fish to shops, you could sell them directly to a fish factory, or even
open your own factory. Then you'll be able to leave your little village for the
city, and finally move to New York, where you could direct the company.'
'How long will that take?' asked the fisherman.
'About 15 to 20 years,' answered the banker.
'And then?'
'Then it gets more interesting,' said the American, smiling and
talking more quickly. 'When the moment comes, you can put your company
on the stock market and you will make millions.'
'Millions? But then what?'
'Then you can retire, live in a small village by the sea, go to the beach, sleep late,
play with your kids...'

already brought up a family of her own, so she feels that she has a lot of
knowledge to pass on. In this situation, it is very difficult for her to keep quiet.
However, when a daughter-in-law is a new mother, she usually wants to find her
own way of doing things. She often interprets her mother-in-law's advice as
criticism, which can cause a conflict.
Secondly, there is the case of the husband. Both women care for him,
although each of them loves him in a different way. On the one hand, he is the
mother-in-law's son and she obviously wants the best for him. On the other hand,
he is the wife's partner, and she wants him to support her. Both women can get
very upset if they see the man taking sides, and this can cause an argument.
However, mothers-in-law actually have a lot to offer, despite their
reputation for causing trouble. They are generally excellent babysitters, and they
don't mind helping with the housework. As long as they have their own
independent lives and help out only when needed, mothers-in-law can play a very
useful role in any family. The important thing is that they should not get too
involved in their sons' and daughters' relationship so that nobody feels bad.

I WILL SURVIVE (IN SPANISH)
The British have a reputation for being bad at
learning languages, but is it really true? I work for a
newspaper which was doing a series of articles about
this. As an experiment, they asked me to try and learn a
completely new language for one month. Then I had to
go to the country and do some 'tests' to see if I could
'survive in different situations. I decided to learn Spanish
because I would like to visit Spain and Latin America in the future. If I go, I don't
want to be the typical Brit who expects everyone else to speak English.
I did a one-month intensive course in Spanish at a language school in London.
I was a complete beginner but I soon found that some Spanish words are very similar
to English ones. For example, hola isn't very different from "hello' and inglés is very
similar to 'English'. But other things were more difficult, for example the verbs in
Spanish change for each person and that means you have to learn a lot of different
endings. My biggest problem was the pronunciation. I found it very difficult to
pronounce some letters in Spanish, especially r and j. I downloaded sentences in
Spanish onto my phone and listened and repeated them again and again.

The Australian crocodile is the

makes crocodiles so dangerous is that
they attack incredibly quickly and take

can suddenly emerge from a river and attack animals or people, and they can run on
land at 17 km/h. Every year in Australia, there are crocodile attacks on humans. Two
years ago, a 24-year-old German tourist died when she went for a swim in a lake.

crocodiles, the girl and her friends decided to have a midnight

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The "Qizilli" or "Aleksandro-Nevski" church stood
proudly in the heart of the city. Its golden domes shined in
the sunlight, visible from afar and guided returning ship
captains to the port. Tsar Alexander III provided funds to
construct this splendid church in Baku, with the condition
that it must be magnificent and appropriate. However,
when the project was complete, they realized that the funds
were not enough. To solve the problem, donations were
collected. The people of Baku, specially Muslim population
contributed the majority of 200.000 manats. Emperor
Alexander III himself came to the foundation-laying
ceremony in Baku. The city's wealthy elite was there as
well. Architect Qoslavski, the church's contractor, worked tirelessly day and night. After
a decade of hard work, the church was finally completed, only after the death of Tsar
Alexander III.
To make the church bells sound beautiful, they added gold and silver to the
metal. People gave gold and silver things, like jewelry and silverware. Women gave
belts, bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, and
brooches, while men gave belts, swords, daggers, and
silverware. Most of the donations came from Muslims.
The bells were made in Ural factories, and the biggest
one was very heavy and took a long time to bring to
Baku.
In 1936, the Stalinist government made the decision to demolish the church and they
used explosives to destroy this magnificent structure.

The British occupied Istanbul and strategic regions, gaining full control over
the Straits. The Italians and French also took control of various regions.
The Armenians seized the opportunity of the Ottoman Empire’s weakness to
fight for their independence, committing large-scale massacres in Eastern Anatolia.
The Greeks occupied Western Anatolia, landing in Izmir and committing great
atrocities against the Turkish people, putting immense pressure on the region.
Amidst this chaos, Mustafa Kemal Pasha's emergence marked a turning point
for the Turkish nation. On May 19, 1919, he landed in Samsun and started the
Turkish struggle for independence and freedom.
During this period, while the country was under occupation, Vahdettin and his
Grand Vizier Damat Ferit Pasha, who were in charge of the Istanbul Government,
remained indifferent to the country's fate. Vahdettin focused on preserving his
throne, while Damat Ferit Pasha prioritized his interests by collaborating with the
occupying forces. Their actions only worsened the country's situation, leading to
unrest and resistance movements.
As soon as Mustafa
Kemal Pasha landed in
Samsun, he issued the
Amasya Circular, declaring
that the nation's independence
would be achieved through
the determination and
decision of the people. This
circular, considered the first
step of the National Struggle,
increased the people’s
resistance and became a
fundamental pillar of the
struggle.
Valuable commanders like
Kazım Karabekir Pasha
provided significant support to Mustafa Kemal Pasha during
this process. Karabekir Pasha played a crucial role by
achieving important victories on the Eastern Front against
Armenian forces, restoring order in Eastern Anatolia. His
work, "Our War of Independence," detailed the events of this
period and illuminated lesser-known aspects of the National
Struggle. Ali Fuat Cebesoy was another key figure, achieving
great successes on the Western Front against Greek forces.
In conclusion, between 1919 and 1923, Turkey underwent
a great process of resistance and rebirth. During this period,
Mustafa Kemal Pasha's leadership, determination, and vision were decisive in the
Turkish nation's struggle for independence and freedom.

SHOLLAR WATER PIPE
The population of Baku suffered greatly
from the lack of water. The municipality had
begun taking measures as early as 1880 to
alleviate this issue. (In this matter, Haji
Zeynalabdin was very active and spent a lot of
money). Initially, they searched for water
sources around Baku, then conducted
explorations in the Shamakhi district. All
efforts were in vain. From 1892 to 1898, a
project was developed to bring water from the Kur River to Baku, but the
proposed pipeline was too expensive, so the municipality did not approve it... Left
without a solution, in 1893,
they set up a device to clean
seawater on the shore.
30,000 buckets of water
were cleaned daily.
However, this was not

purification device was put into operation. In addition, they transported water
from the Kur River and sold a bucket for half a coin. Later, they started
transporting water from the Volga River. This water was more expensive, costing
two coins per bucket. The poor had to fulfill their basic water needs only from the
wells in the yards. This often led to various diseases. The
government occasionally poured medicine into these wells and sometimes filled
them with soil. In 1899, seeing an increasing demand for water in the city, Haji
Zeynalabdin Tagiyev contracted with foreign companies for 25,000 manats. He
sent the European engineer William Lindley, who had built water pipelines in
several European cities, from Frankfurt to find a water source. He instructed
Lindley to find a spring. Lindley dug a well near Quba, 190 kilometers away from
Baku, and discovered the source of
the Shollar spring. The municipality
doubted the water source found near
Quba and was reluctant to believe it,
trying to reject the idea of building a
pipeline. Tagiyev told the doubters
that just as Shahdag is eternal with its
snow and glaciers, the water of the
Shollar spring is also eternal. Finally,
in late 1916, the Baku-Shollar water
pipeline was completed, and the work was completed in January 1917. It was
difficult to imagine the joy of the city's population that day. On that day, many
sheep, camels, and oxen were sacrificed, and feasts were held in the
neighborhoods. The water fountains started working, and the population was
supplied with water three times a day - in the morning, at noon, and in the
evening.

When her tour ended, they asked the lady when she would come back to our city.
The lady, shaking her head, replied, "Probably never. Because I am not used to
performing in circus and casino halls. In your beautiful, wealthy Baku, there is no
suitable opera house where a singer can show her talent and skill." Mailov learns of
this and asks, "Madam, where are you going now, and for how long?" The singer
announces that she is going on tour to Japan and will return in a year. Mailov says
that in a year, our city will have a suitable building ready for her honor. They agree.
Mailov hired architect Bayev to design the opera house and tells him that it should
not only look like the Tbilisi opera house but should be even more beautiful. Hacı
Zeynalabdin Tağıyev hears about this situation, and when they met, Hacı
Zeynalabdin says, "I can't believe it; to build such a building in a year. It's a
difficult task." Mailov smiles and says, "Haji, let's make a deal. If the building is
not ready within a year, I will complete it and hand it over to you, and the expenses
will be on me. No, if I complete it, you will pay for the costs, and the building will
be mine." They agree. Mailov completes the building in eight months instead of a
year. Mailov sends a telegram to the singer lady, who comes to Baku and
participates in the opening of the opera, singing the first aria. The city's wealthy
individuals, musicians, and theater masters attend the opening. When the singer
finishes her performance, money rains down on her head. The stage is covered in
flowers from end to end.

Spasibo Zeynalabdin
At that time, it was customary to give nicknames. The
history of the Spasibo nickname is interesting. When a man from
Icherisheher named Zeynalabdin saw the Shah giving medals to
others, he also dreamed of receiving a medal. He went to the
governor of Baku and requested to donate his caravanserai in
Icherisheher to the Shah's children. The governor felt angry at
him, saying that the Shah's children are not in need of his
dilapidated caravanserai. Zeynalabdin respectfully replied, "Sir,
when I say the Shah's children, I mean the soldiers. They are also
the Shah's children." When the governor became aware of the
request, he received a letter from Zeynalabdin and sent it to St.
Petersburg. Zeynalabdin frequently visited the governorship near
the Tazepir Mosque, asking for a response. One day, the governor called Zeynalabdin and
informed him that His Excellency had accepted his request: empty the caravanserai, clean it up,
and prepare it because we will move the soldiers there in a day or two. Zeynalabdin, joyfully
asked what favor His Excellency had granted him, and the Governor looked at the paper and said,
"He has written 'Thank you' to you." From that day on, the man's name became "Spasibo
Zeynalabdin."
lavish clothes. At that moment, Haji realized it was Tsar Nicholas. He asked Hajiaga
who he was and why he had come and why he was crying next to the grave. The
woman also approached him. He explained that he had come from Baku. At that
moment, Hajiaga already knew that they were the graves of royal families. Hajiaga
answered that in our religion, the king is God's representative on earth. Crying and
praying for them is an obligation, our duty. It was obvious that the king was pleased
with what he said. When the Tsar learned why Hajiaga was there, the king ordered to
solve his problem as soon as possible. Several years later, Haji Hajiaga is invited to
St. Petersburg. When he arrives at the station, two officers come to meet him and
take him to the place where the carriage is waiting. Haji Hajiaga asks whose
carriage it is. They inform him that the Tsar himself sent the carriage for him. Haji
Hajiaga says, "Let's go. The common people don't ride in the king's carriage; the
king's carriage goes ahead, and the commoners walk behind it as pedestrians... This
itself is a great honor, great joy...".
AGA MUSA NAGHIYEV
Once Agha Musa arrives at the mine and
observes the workers gathered around the
bonfire, enjoying their lunch break. Then the
person-in-charge of the project lights his
cigarette with a matchstick. Agha Musa tells
him not to come to work starting from next day.
When asked for the reason, he answers: “there is
bonfire in front of you but you are wasting a
matchstick. If you don’t understand the worth of
your belongings, you will never comprehend
mine either”
Once, there was a charity event in Taghiyev’s residence. Guests were
warmly welcomed by Tagiyev’s wife, Sona khanim. Two young girls were
accompanying her, each carrying trays in their hands. When Agha Musa entered
the hall. She approached him. Agha Musa hesitantly put 3 manats on the tray.
Sona khanim said “Agha Musa, just a while ago, your son, Agha Ismayil put 100
manats on the tray but you …”. He interrupted her, saying: “Of course he did!
whose son is he? A millionaire, Agha Musa. And who am I, Miss Sona? Just the
son of Naghi, the hay seller.
As they drove through town, the driver honked at people, making them
stay away from the main road. When the driver didn't honk the horn enough, he
insisted to play it more. The driver told him it would be extra to play it, and the
man agreed. The total price was 25 manats for the car and 35 manats for the horn
at the end of the trip. When they arrived in Balaxani, everyone gathered around
the car and asked about his experience of the car trip. He said the car was cheap,
but the horn was very expensive.
