WHO KNOWS YOU BETTER – YOUR MOTHER OR YOUR BEST FRIEND?

In our weekly experiment, single people who are
looking for a partner ask their mother and their best
friend to help. This week's single person is Charlotte
Ramirez, a 25-year-old web designer. Her father is
Spanish and her mother is English. She lives in Brighton
and she doesn't have a partner at the moment. Her
mother, Alice, chooses a man she thinks is perfect for
her daughter and her best friend, Katie, chooses another.
Then Charlotte goes on a date with each man. Which
one does she prefer?
‘I love going to the cinema, but I often feel like
staying at home with a good book,' says Charlotte. “I'm
quite friendly and sociable and get on well with most
people. I think I have a good sense of humor.”
'What kind of men do I like? Well, I like interesting men who can make me
laugh. Physically, I prefer men with a really nice smile who are taller than me.
And I don't usually like men with beards! I like men who are into literature and
art, and classical music.'
'I'm not sure who is going to choose better for me. Both my mum and my
best friend know me very well. Perhaps Katie could find me a guy who is
physically more compatible, but my mother has known me for longer!
[Feel like – ürəyi istəmək, to be into – maraqlanmaq]

READING N2: WHO KNOWS YOU BETTER – YOUR MOTHER OR
YOUR BEST FRIEND?
This week's single man is Richard Taylor, a 26-year-
old musician from Southampton, His mother Meg chooses
one girl, and his best friend Danny chooses another: Then
Richard goes on a date with each girl. Which girl does he
prefer? Who knows him better, his mother or his best
friend? Who chooses the right girl for him?
I usually work in England but sometimes I work
abroad too. When I'm not working, I like going to the cinema and eating in nice
restaurants. I'm not very sporty and I don't do any exercise, but at least I don't
smoke.
I think I'm open and friendly - I get on well with most people - but I'm
sometimes quite shy too. For example: I don't like going to parties. I prefer to
meet friends individually or in small groups.
I like intelligent, funny women who make me laugh, and ideally who love
music. Physically I prefer women with dark hair who are not taller than me. And
I like women who are good listeners. I'm sure that my friend Danny knows me
better than my family because we often talk about girlfriends and the problems
we have. I don't usually talk to my family about that kind of thing. My mum
always says that 1 look for the wrong kind of girl but that's what mothers always
say!

Last October I went on holiday to Thailand for

two weeks with my girlfriend, Mia. The holiday
began well. We spent two days in Bangkok and saw
the Floating Market and the Royal Palace. But
things went wrong when we left Bangkok. I wanted Floating Market
to stay in hostels, which
were basic but clean, but Mia said they were too
uncomfortable and so we stayed in quite expensive hotels.
I wanted to experience the local atmosphere but Mia just
wanted to go shopping. I thought I knew Mia very well,
but you don't know a person until you travel with them. It
was awful. We argued about everything.
For our last four days we went to Ko
Chang, a beautiful island. It was like
being in paradise. The weather was lovely
and the beaches were wonderful, but we
just sunbathed without speaking. We
spent our last night back in Bangkok and
we went for a drink with some
Australians. They were really friendly and Mia started flirting with
one of the boys. That was the end. When we arrived at Heathrow airport the next day
we decided to break up, I took hundreds of photos, but when I got home I didn't show
them to anyone

LAURA:
Last spring my best friend Isabelle and I booked a
holiday in Venice. We rented a small apartment for a
week with a fantastic view of the canals. At the last
moment another friend, Linda, asked if she could
come too. We felt sorry for her because she had
problems with her
EXTRA QUESTION: boyfriend, so we said yes.
•What kind of places
shouldn’t we travel?
• What would you do if you
travelled with a person like
Venice was magical and the weather was perfect, but the holiday was a disaster
for one simple reason: Linda was so mean! She has a good job so she's not poor, but
she just didn't want to pay for anything. When we went sightseeing, she didn't want to
go to any museums or galleries that cost money. When we went on a gondola, she
complained that it was very expensive. When we went to have lunch or dinner she
always wanted to go to cheap restaurants or she bought pizzas and ate them in the flat.
But the night I invited her and Isabelle out on my birthday she chose the most
expensive things on the menu! The worst thing was that although Isabelle and I paid
for the apartment, Linda never once bought us a coffee or a drink.
I'd love to go back to Venice one day, but without Linda.

A MOMENT IN HISTORY
On 4th November I arrived in
Chicago late in the evening. I wanted to
photograph Barack Obama and his
family in the Convention Center, but
when I got there, I discovered that I
didn't have my press pass and I
couldn't go inside. I walked around the park outside the center. Although it was
November, it was a warm night.
The atmosphere was wonderful. When I took this photo, everybody was
looking at the TV screens waiting for the election results. Some people were
quietly holdin g hands and smiling - others were tense and nervous. They felt
that it was their moment. Suddenly I realized that this was a better place to be
than inside. I was watching Obama's victory through the faces of all these people,
African, Hispanic, Chinese, white.
At about 11 o'clock the results were announced, and
everybody went mad. People started laughing, shouting,
and crying. But when Obama made his speech, they all
became quiet and emotional. There was only one place
to be on the planet that night - and I was there.

ARIAU AMAZON TOWERS
Ariau Amazon Towers is one of
the most incredible hotels I've ever
stayed in. It's located in the heart of the
Amazon rainforest in Brazil, about 60
kilometers from Manaus, the nearest
city. What makes it so special is that
most of the hotel is elevated in the trees,
standing 30 meters above the ground!
There are two excellent restaurants, and
after dinner, you can enjoy a drink in
one of four bars. Alternatively, you can swim in one of the hotel's beautiful pools
while observing monkeys and birds in the trees above.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy nearby. I went for a long walk in the
rainforest with an excellent local guide and saw plants, trees, birds. You can also
visit local villages for the day or embark on a boat trip along the River Amazon
to fish for piranhas. Every day is an adventure - I was never bored during my
three-day stay.
Ariau Amazon Towers boasts 278 rooms and suites, including a Tarzan Suite,
with prices averaging around $120 per night. The rainy season lasts from
December to June, so the best time to visit is from July to November.

JULES' UNDERSEA LODGE

Jules' Undersea Lodge in Florida initially
made me nervous because it's an underwater
hotel, and I couldn't dive. However, after a
three-hour class, I was able to dive down to the
hotel with an instructor (you can obtain a full
diving certificate in three days).
Jules' Undersea Lodge started as a
research laboratory in the 1970s and is unique
for several reasons. Firstly, it's very small - just
two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a shared living
room. Additionally, there aren't any staff on-
site; they're on land. However, they monitor the
hotel 24 hours a day, and you can request room
service whenever you'd like. On my first
evening, I ordered a pizza, and half an hour
later, a diver delivered it to me at the hotel!
During the day, you can go diving,
snorkeling, or take an underwater walk. A tour
of the nearby shipwreck is a must, an

cheap (one night, costs $499 per person), it's an
unforgettable experience regardless of when

The thousand and one nights

The Thousand and One Nights is
probably one of the most famous books
in the world. It is a collection of stories
first told by
travellers from
Persia, Arabia,
India and China
between the
ninth and
thirteenth
centuries. In later years professional storytellers also told the stories in coffee
houses in Turkiye, Egypt and many other countries. The Thousand and One
Nights contains well-known stories like Aladdin and Ali Baba and the Forty
Thieves, so people often think they are just for children - but they were originally
for adults.
The new edition of The Thousand and One Nights is fully illustrated and
contains new versions of all the stories, translated from the original texts by Brian
Woodhead.
Shahrazad's story
There was once an Indian king called
Shahriyar. One day King Shahriyar found his wife
with another man so he killed her and her lover.
After that the King married a different woman
every day and killed her the next morning before
she could stop loving him. This continued for
three years. Shahrazad was the clever and
beautiful daughter of the King's adviser. When her
father told her what was happening, she decided to
marry the King.
Shahrazad's father tried to
stop her because he
knew she was going to
die. But Shahrazad had a plan to save herself and all the
women in the kingdom. The King and Shahrazad got
married a few days later. After the wedding, while the King
was drinking with his friends, Shahrazad went to find her
sister. "I need your help," said Shahrazad. "Come to the palace this evening and ask me
to tell you a story."

Equality In The Home
Men and women all over the world often argue about
doing housework, and it's usually the women who lose.
However, a recent study by researchers at Oxford
University shows that the situation is slowly improving.
The researchers asked men and women aged between 20
and 59 to keep a diary of how much time they spent on
housework each day. After collecting and analyzing these
diaries, some interesting results emerged. Women in the UK today spend about
four hours and 40 minutes each day doing housework. Men, on the other hand,
spend two hours and 28 minutes on the same tasks. Although women still spend
more time on domestic jobs, the figures show that the situation is improving. In
the 1960s, women spent six hours a day on housework while men only spent 90
minutes.
The study suggests that women are still doing most of the housework because
people still divide domestic jobs into two areas. Cooking, cleaning, and looking
after children are seen as 'women's work', while general repairs, car maintenance,
and outdoor work are considered 'men's work'.
This research also revealed some surprising findings. For instance, some men
admitted that they actually enjoy cooking and cleaning! However, due to societal
expectations, they tend to avoid these tasks. Maybe as these expectations start to
change, we will see a more equal sharing of household chores.
Overall, the results of the study bring good news for women. The difference
between the amount of time men and women spend on housework is getting
smaller every year. This means that the time will come when both sexes share
domestic chores equally. However, women will have to be extremely patient, as
this change won't be complete for another four decades!
In the meantime, perhaps we can find ways to make housework more enjoyable.
Who knows, maybe in the future, housework will become
a source of pleasure rather than a chore!

friends. When they are asked, 'Did you have a good weekend?' they don't like to
say that they just stayed at home and watched TV, because it sounds boring. So
they invent the details. The most common lie that people told was 'I went out on
Saturday night', when really they didn't go anywhere. Other common lies were 'I
had a romantic meal', 'I went to a party', and 'I went away for the weekend'.
In fact, in the survey, 30% of people who answered the questions said that
they spent their weekend sleeping or resting because they were so tired at the end
of the week.
Another 30% said that they needed to work or study at the weekend.
Psychologist Corinne Sweet says that people often don't tell the truth about their
weekend 'because we don't want to feel that everyone else is having a better time
than us, if we have had a boring weekend doing housework, paperwork, or just
resting after a tiring week at work'. She also believes that networking sites such
as Facebook and Twitter may be encouraging us to invent details about our
social lives.
People can create an illusion of who they want to be and the life they want
to live,' says Corinne, and of course they want that life to seem exciting.

Shoe shops discover matching crimes

Swedish fictional detectives like
Wallander and Salander are famous
worldwide. But recently real-life
Swedish police were completely puzzled
by a mysterious crime. Somebody was
stealing expensive designer shoes from
shoe shops in Sweden - but not pairs of
shoes, only the left shoes, the ones which
were on display.
The first robbery took place in a shopping mall in Malmö, Sweden's third-
largest city. Staff at a shoe shop saw two men stealing at their boutique. They
escaped with seven left shoes which - if paired with the right shoes - were worth
£900.
In the end it was shop assistants who pointed the police in the right direction
- to Denmark, where shops traditionally display the right shoe in their shop
windows.
"We noticed that left shoes were disappearing in the past. but we never
caught the thieves." said a shop assistant.
Since we know that Danish stores display the right shoes, we thought that the
matching shoes were probably disappearing as well in stores in Denmark."
Malmo, home to 125 shoe shops, is only a 30-minute train ride away from
Copenhagen, which has several hundred shops, and many brands are sold in both
cities.
Yesterday police finally announced that they had arrested the men
responsible for the robberies. But Mr, Johansson, a Swedish shoe shop owner,
fears that shoe shop robberies will increase this year. "Shoes are attractive to steal
- they are easy to move and easy to sell and they have become very expensive
lately. Also many stores have cut the number of shop assistants they employ.
Police in Malmo have thought of asking Danish shoe shops to also display
the left shoe. But this won't work. All the thieves will have to do is move to
Germany - where they also display the right shoe …

'Great fish!' he said. 'How long did it take
you to catch them?' 'Not very long,' answered the

The American interrupted him. 'I have an MBA from Harvard University
and I can help you. You're not fishing as much as you can. If you start fishing for
longer periods of time, you'll get enough money from selling the fish to buy a
bigger boat. Then with the money you'll get from catching and selling more fish,
you could buy a second boat, and then a third one, and so on. Then instead of
selling your fish to shops, you could sell them directly to a fish factory, or even
open your own factory. Then you'll be able to leave your little village for the
city, and finally move to New York, where you could direct the company.'
'How long will that take?' asked the fisherman.
'About 15 to 20 years,' answered the banker.
'And then?'
'Then it gets more interesting,' said the American, smiling and
talking more quickly. 'When the moment comes, you can put your company
on the stock market and you will make millions.'
'Millions? But then what?'
'Then you can retire, live in a small village by the sea, go to the beach, sleep late,
play with your kids...'

In the early 1900s, Haji Zeynalabdin
Tagiyev's textile factory began operating. He built
a mosque for the workers and a special school for

all. It took six years of hard work and spending

was tough competition with leading Russian

textile manufacturers, like Morozov, who were worried about losing markets in
Iran, Turkey, and Turkistan because of the cheap production near Baku. The
factory's machines were imported from England. When the Emir of Bukhara
heard about it, he suggested Tagiyev build the factory in Bukhara, Samarkand, or
Khiva, promising to provide all the cotton needed. However, Tagiyev turned
down the offer, saying it would be better to have the factory in Baku. After the
factory started, saboteurs set fire to it at night. The workers managed to put out
the fire, but there was damage to goods and equipment. The factory had 2,500
machines and devices imported from Europe. It was one of Russia's 29 textile
factories, but it was a new field for Azerbaijani industry. It was not only the first
and only textile factory in Baku but also in the entire Caucasus. Unfortunately,
this factory was only allowed to produce fabric. The owners of the central
Russian textile factory did not allow other products. At first, the fabric was sold
in the Caucasus, Turkistan, and Iran. But after three or four years, it was bought
by people going to Mecca, hajj pilgrims, those visiting Karbala and Khorasan, to
be used for their visits, woven by Muslim workers and craftsmen to keep it pure.

The Truth About Mothers-In-Law

Although it's men who tell jokes about them,
mothers-in-law are usually less popular with their
daughters-in-law than with their sons-in-law. A recent
study of 49 married couples found that two thirds of
wives interviewed said that their mothers-in-law caused
them 'unhappiness and stress', compared with 15% of
the husbands.
There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, there
is the question of experience. A mother-in-law has
PRE-INTERMEDIATE – B1

already brought up a family of her own, so she feels that she has a lot of
knowledge to pass on. In this situation, it is very difficult for her to keep quiet.
However, when a daughter-in-law is a new mother, she usually wants to find her
own way of doing things. She often interprets her mother-in-law's advice as
criticism, which can cause a conflict.
Secondly, there is the case of the husband. Both women care for him,
although each of them loves him in a different way. On the one hand, he is the
mother-in-law's son and she obviously wants the best for him. On the other hand,
he is the wife's partner, and she wants him to support her. Both women can get
very upset if they see the man taking sides, and this can cause an argument.
However, mothers-in-law actually have a lot to offer, despite their
reputation for causing trouble. They are generally excellent babysitters, and they
don't mind helping with the housework. As long as they have their own
independent lives and help out only when needed, mothers-in-law can play a very
useful role in any family. The important thing is that they should not get too
involved in their sons' and daughters' relationship so that nobody feels bad.

The Kimchi Museum

Seoul, South Korea
If you don't know about kimchi, a trip to the
Kimchi Museum is an eye-opening experience. The
museum was founded in 1986 to highlight South
Korea's rich kimchi culture. The exhibit includes
displays of cooking utensils and materials related
to making, storing, and eating the famous pickled
vegetables. The museum also provides details about
the history and nutritional benefits of South
Korea's most beloved side dish. Finally, stop by the
souvenir shop to try various types of kimchi.

The Museum of Gold

Bogotá, Colombia
If you want to see beautiful objects, the Museum of Gold is the place. It holds
one of South America's most stunning collections. Because the exhibits sparkle
so brightly, you can actually take photographs without using a flash on your
camera! Not everything is made of gold, though. Among the exhibits are ancient
pre-Columbian items. Many of them are made from a mixture of gold and
copper, known as tumbaga.

The Museum of Broken Relationships

Zagreb, Croatia
The Museum of Broken Relationships, found
in Zagreb, Croatia, is a unique museum focusing on
relationships that didn't work out. It was started in
2006 by Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić. People
donate items from past relationships along with stories
about them. These items can be anything from letters
and photos to everyday objects like clothes or
jewelry. The museum lets visitors explore these
items and stories, offering a chance to think about
love, loss, and human connections. It's gained a lot of
attention worldwide since it started and has even had
exhibitions in different cities.

T he Museum of Torture Instruments

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The Museum of Torture Instruments can be found in
different cities, such as Prague, San Gimignano, and
Amsterdam. Inside, you'll discover a collection of old tools
that were once used for punishing
people. These tools include things like
the rack, iron maiden, and thumbscrew. The
museum's main aim is to help us learn about
the harsh times in history when people were

treated unfairly. By looking at these tools and hearing their stories, we can
understand how punishments have changed over time. It also reminds us how
important it is to be kind and respectful to each other. However, it's important to
note that some of the things in the museum might be scary or upsetting for some
people, so it's not recommended for everyone.

AUDREY HEPBURN AND HER WEDDING DRESS

In 1952, Audrey Hepburn was in Rome,
making the film Roman Holiday with Gregory
Peck. She was engaged to James Hanson, a
London 'playboy', and she asked a famous Italian
designer, Zoe Fontana, to make her la dress for
the wedding.
Signora Fontana said, Audrey was 23. She
was so young and so beautiful then. She tried the
dress on many times. It was in white lace, with a
lot of tiny buttons down the back, and she wanted
to wear flowers on her head.'
But two weeks before the wedding, Audrey
Hepburn decided not to get married. She phoned
Zoe Fontana and said, ‘I've cancelled the
wedding. But I want another girl to wear my
wedding dress, perhaps a poor girl who could never pay for a dress like this one.
Find a beautiful girl and give the dress to her.’
Signora Fontana found a poor 20-year-old girl in Latina, a town near Rome.
She was exactly the same size as Hepburn and the dress fitted her perfectly. Her
name was Amabile Altobello.
Signora Altobello said, ‘1 wanted to get married, but my fiancé and I didn't have
enough money for a wedding. When Audrey Hepburn gave me the dress it was like a
dream come true’.
Everybody in the town was very excited, and they also gave us furniture, and
even organized a honeymoon for us in Paris.' Today Signora Altobello is over 70
years old but she still has the dress. 'We are still poor and we have had a hard life,
but we have three daughters and five grandchildren. We have had a happy marriage,
so the dress brought me luck.'

I WILL SURVIVE (IN SPANISH)
The British have a reputation for being bad at
learning languages, but is it really true? I work for a
newspaper which was doing a series of articles about
this. As an experiment, they asked me to try and learn a
completely new language for one month. Then I had to
go to the country and do some 'tests' to see if I could
'survive in different situations. I decided to learn Spanish
because I would like to visit Spain and Latin America in the future. If I go, I don't
want to be the typical Brit who expects everyone else to speak English.
I did a one-month intensive course in Spanish at a language school in London.
I was a complete beginner but I soon found that some Spanish words are very similar
to English ones. For example, hola isn't very different from "hello' and inglés is very
similar to 'English'. But other things were more difficult, for example the verbs in
Spanish change for each person and that means you have to learn a lot of different
endings. My biggest problem was the pronunciation. I found it very difficult to
pronounce some letters in Spanish, especially r and j. I downloaded sentences in
Spanish onto my phone and listened and repeated them again and again.

How much can you learn in a month?

I work for a magazine, which was doing an
article about British language learners. As an
experiment, they asked me to learn a completely
new language for one month. Then I had to go to
the country and do some 'tests' to see if I could
'survive' in different situations. I decided to learn
Polish because my great-grandmother was Polish
and I have some relatives there. I can already
speak French and Spanish quite well but Polish
isn't a Latin-based language so I knew it would be
completely different.
I did a one month intensive course at a language school in Birmingham. I
thought I was good at languages before I started learning Polish, but now I'm not
so sure. I found it incredibly difficult.
The grammar was really complicated and the words were not like any
other language I know so it was very hard to remember them. For example, I
thought 'football' was more or less an international word, but in Polish it's ‘pilka
noźna’. And the pronunciation is unbelievable! Every word is full of z's where
you don't expect them, like ‘jeździsz’ which means 'you go'.
My course finished yesterday and I'm going to Krakow for the weekend to
do my tests.
A local guide called Kasia is coming with me and is going to give me a
mark out of 10.

Frankenstein
The story of Frankenstein is famous all over
the world. It was written in 1818 by Mary
Shelley, and was immediately a big success.
It's a horror story which some people also
see as the first science-fiction novel. And
although it's a
very well-
known story, most people have the wrong idea about
who Frankenstein is.
They think it's the name of the monster in the story,
but in fact it's the name of the scientist who created
it.
The book begins with the letters of an English
explorer, Captain Robert Walton. He tells us about
Victor Frankenstein, a scientist from Geneva, who he
meets in the Arctic. Frankenstein has discovered the

secret of creating life, and he decides to make a human being. He visits

graveyards at night, and collects bodies. Using different parts of these, he creates
and brings to life a being, which is both man and monster.
The monster is huge and ugly, but also intelligent and sensitive.
Of course, when people see it, they are terrified, so the poor
monster has no friends and feels lonely and depressed.
Finally, it asks Frankenstein to make it a wife. This he
refuses to do, and the angry monster kills Frankenstein's
bride, Elizabeth, and his brother and best friend. Frankenstein
is heartbroken and wants to kill the monster, which runs
away. Frankenstein chases it across the world and dies when
they meet in the Arctic. The monster then kills itself.
There are over 40 films that tell the story of Frankenstein.
The first was made as long ago as 1910. It's a fascinating tale
because of the complex character of the monster, which is both frightening and
sad at the same time.

THE CROCODILE’S DANGER
The Australian crocodile is the
largest crocodile in the world. It can
grow up to seven meters long, and the
biggest can weigh up to 1000
kilograms. It has only two muscles to
open its mouth but 40 to close it! What
makes crocodiles so dangerous is that
they attack incredibly quickly and take
their victims underwater to drown them. They usually attack in the water, but they
can suddenly emerge from a river and attack animals or people, and they can run on
land at 17 km/h. Every year in Australia, there are crocodile attacks on humans. Two
years ago, a 24-year-old German tourist died when she went for a swim in a lake.
Although there were signs warning people that there might be
crocodiles, the girl and her friends decided to have a midnight
swim. The girl suddenly disappeared, and the next morning her

body was found. Near it was a four-meter crocodile. And only last month, two
Australian boys watched in horror as their friend was killed by a crocodile when they
were washing their mountain bikes in a river. They climbed a tree and stayed there
for 22 hours while the crocodile waited below. But you can survive a crocodile
attack. Last year Norman Pascoe, a 19-year-old, was saved from a crocodile when
his aunt hit it on the nose. Norman's aunt said: "I hit it and I shouted, 'Help!' The
crocodile suddenly opened its mouth, and my nephew escaped!"

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The "Qizilli" or "Aleksandro-Nevski" church stood
proudly in the heart of the city. Its golden domes shined in
the sunlight, visible from afar and guided returning ship
captains to the port. Tsar Alexander III provided funds to
construct this splendid church in Baku, with the condition
that it must be magnificent and appropriate. However,
when the project was complete, they realized that the funds
were not enough. To solve the problem, donations were
collected. The people of Baku, specially Muslim population
contributed the majority of 200.000 manats. Emperor
Alexander III himself came to the foundation-laying
ceremony in Baku. The city's wealthy elite was there as
well. Architect Qoslavski, the church's contractor, worked tirelessly day and night. After
a decade of hard work, the church was finally completed, only after the death of Tsar
Alexander III.
To make the church bells sound beautiful, they added gold and silver to the
metal. People gave gold and silver things, like jewelry and silverware. Women gave
belts, bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, and
brooches, while men gave belts, swords, daggers, and
silverware. Most of the donations came from Muslims.
The bells were made in Ural factories, and the biggest
one was very heavy and took a long time to bring to
Baku.
In 1936, the Stalinist government made the decision to demolish the church and they
used explosives to destroy this magnificent structure.

Atatürk and the Fall of the Ottoman

State
In early May 1919, the situation in the country was very worrying. The
Ottoman Empire, which had ruled Anatolia for 500 years, was in a very poor state.
Enemies surrounded the country from all sides. Seeing the Ottoman Empire so
weakened, foreign powers such as the Greeks, French, Italians, and British quickly
moved to take over the empire. Many ethnic groups living in these lands also took
advantage of the empire’s weakness, seeking to destroy it further.

The British occupied Istanbul and strategic regions, gaining full control over
the Straits. The Italians and French also took control of various regions.
The Armenians seized the opportunity of the Ottoman Empire’s weakness to
fight for their independence, committing large-scale massacres in Eastern Anatolia.
The Greeks occupied Western Anatolia, landing in Izmir and committing great
atrocities against the Turkish people, putting immense pressure on the region.
Amidst this chaos, Mustafa Kemal Pasha's emergence marked a turning point
for the Turkish nation. On May 19, 1919, he landed in Samsun and started the
Turkish struggle for independence and freedom.
During this period, while the country was under occupation, Vahdettin and his
Grand Vizier Damat Ferit Pasha, who were in charge of the Istanbul Government,
remained indifferent to the country's fate. Vahdettin focused on preserving his
throne, while Damat Ferit Pasha prioritized his interests by collaborating with the
occupying forces. Their actions only worsened the country's situation, leading to
unrest and resistance movements.
As soon as Mustafa
Kemal Pasha landed in
Samsun, he issued the
Amasya Circular, declaring
that the nation's independence
would be achieved through
the determination and
decision of the people. This
circular, considered the first
step of the National Struggle,
increased the people’s
resistance and became a
fundamental pillar of the
struggle.
Valuable commanders like
Kazım Karabekir Pasha
provided significant support to Mustafa Kemal Pasha during
this process. Karabekir Pasha played a crucial role by
achieving important victories on the Eastern Front against
Armenian forces, restoring order in Eastern Anatolia. His
work, "Our War of Independence," detailed the events of this
period and illuminated lesser-known aspects of the National
Struggle. Ali Fuat Cebesoy was another key figure, achieving
great successes on the Western Front against Greek forces.
In conclusion, between 1919 and 1923, Turkey underwent
a great process of resistance and rebirth. During this period,
Mustafa Kemal Pasha's leadership, determination, and vision were decisive in the
Turkish nation's struggle for independence and freedom.

Ottoman
architecture
Ottoman architecture, spanning from the
14th to the early 20th century, reflects the
grandeur and sophistication of the Ottoman
Empire. This style blends influences from
Byzantine and Islamic traditions, showcasing
the diverse cultures within the empire.
A hallmark of Ottoman architecture is the
use of large central domes, often surrounded
by smaller semi-domes, creating a sense of
vast space and grandeur. This feature, influenced by
Byzantine architecture, is exemplified by the Blue
Mosque in Istanbul. The use of İznik tiles, known for their vibrant blue and white
patterns, adds aesthetic beauty to buildings like the Süleymaniye Mosque.
Minarets, tall slender towers for the call to prayer, are another
distinctive feature. Ottoman mosques typically have one or more

minarets with ornate balconies, as seen in the Selimiye Mosque in

Edirne, designed by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan.
Ottoman palaces, such as the Topkapi Palace in
Istanbul, illustrate the empire’s architectural prowess with
their lavish courtyards, intricate tile work, and sprawling
layouts. Topkapi Palace, the administrative center and
residence of the sultans, epitomizes Ottoman opulence
and ingenuity.
Public buildings, including hammams (bathhouses),
caravanserais (roadside inns), and bazaars, reflect the
functional and social aspects of
Ottoman architecture. These
structures served the needs of the people, providing spaces
for commerce, socialization, and relaxation. The Grand
Bazaar in Istanbul, one of the oldest and largest covered
markets in the world, highlights the importance of trade and
community in Ottoman society.
Mimar Sinan, the chief architect in the 16th century,
played a crucial role in developing Ottoman architecture. His
works, including the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Selimiye
Mosque, are considered masterpieces. Sinan’s innovative
designs and engineering skills significantly contributed to the refinement of
Ottoman architectural style.
In conclusion, Ottoman architecture showcases the empire’s cultural diversity,
artistic achievement, and architectural innovation. The blend of Byzantine and
Islamic influences, combined with unique Ottoman elements, has left a lasting mark
on the region’s architectural heritage. These structures continue to awe and inspire,
standing as enduring symbols of the Ottoman Empire’s legacy.

SHOLLAR WATER PIPE
The population of Baku suffered greatly
from the lack of water. The municipality had
begun taking measures as early as 1880 to
alleviate this issue. (In this matter, Haji
Zeynalabdin was very active and spent a lot of
money). Initially, they searched for water
sources around Baku, then conducted
explorations in the Shamakhi district. All
efforts were in vain. From 1892 to 1898, a
project was developed to bring water from the Kur River to Baku, but the
proposed pipeline was too expensive, so the municipality did not approve it... Left
without a solution, in 1893,
they set up a device to clean
seawater on the shore.
30,000 buckets of water
were cleaned daily.
However, this was not

enough to meet the needs of the population. Five years later, a second water
purification device was put into operation. In addition, they transported water
from the Kur River and sold a bucket for half a coin. Later, they started
transporting water from the Volga River. This water was more expensive, costing
two coins per bucket. The poor had to fulfill their basic water needs only from the
wells in the yards. This often led to various diseases. The
government occasionally poured medicine into these wells and sometimes filled
them with soil. In 1899, seeing an increasing demand for water in the city, Haji
Zeynalabdin Tagiyev contracted with foreign companies for 25,000 manats. He
sent the European engineer William Lindley, who had built water pipelines in
several European cities, from Frankfurt to find a water source. He instructed
Lindley to find a spring. Lindley dug a well near Quba, 190 kilometers away from
Baku, and discovered the source of
the Shollar spring. The municipality
doubted the water source found near
Quba and was reluctant to believe it,
trying to reject the idea of building a
pipeline. Tagiyev told the doubters
that just as Shahdag is eternal with its
snow and glaciers, the water of the
Shollar spring is also eternal. Finally,
in late 1916, the Baku-Shollar water
pipeline was completed, and the work was completed in January 1917. It was
difficult to imagine the joy of the city's population that day. On that day, many
sheep, camels, and oxen were sacrificed, and feasts were held in the
neighborhoods. The water fountains started working, and the population was
supplied with water three times a day - in the morning, at noon, and in the
evening.

THE MAN BEHIND KFC

Harland Sanders was born in the USA in 1890, but his
childhood wasn't a happy one. His father died when he was
only six so his mother needed to find a job. She went to work
in a shirt factory and Harland stayed at home to look after his
younger brother and sister. That was when he first learned to
cook.
He left home when he was twelve and worked on a nearby
farm. After that he had a lot of different jobs and in 1930 he became a service station
manager in Corbin, Kentucky.
He started cooking meals for hungry travelers who stopped at the service
station, and soon people came only for the food. Harland moved to a 142-seat
restaurant across the street where he could serve all his customers. Over the next
nine years he developed the secret chicken recipe that made him famous.
In the early 1950s he closed the restaurant and decided to sell his recipe to other
businesses. The first official Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant didn't open until
August 1952 - by 1964 there were more than 600 KFCs in North America. That year

Sanders sold the company for $2 million, but he continued to work as KFC's public
spokesman and visited restaurants all over the world. He travelled 250,000 miles
every year until he died in 1980, aged 90. Six years later PepsiCo bought KFC for
$840 million.
There are now KFC restaurants in more than 80 countries and they sell 2.5 billion
chicken dinners every year – and the recipe is still a secret!

THE STORY OF A SONG

`In 1940 John Winston Lennon was born in
Liverpool, a city in the northwest of
England.
In 1957 Lennon met Paul
McCartney and they began writing songs
together. They later formed The Beatles,
who became one of the most successful
groups in pop history during the 1960s.
In 1958 Lennon's mother, Julio, died in
a road accident.
In 1969 Lennon married Japanese artist Yoko Ono.
In 1970 The Beatles broke up and
Lennon began a solo career, becoming
more and more active as a peace
campaigner. He wrote the lyrics to Imagine on the back of a hotel bill while he was on
an airplane.
In 1971 Lennon recorded Imagine. A pop video showing Lennon performing
the song with Yoko at his side was also made, but Imagine was not released as a
single. In the same year, Lennon went to live in New York City.
In 1980 Lennon was shot dead
outside his New York home by an
obsessed fan. Imagine was released as a
single and became a Number One record
around the world
In 1984 the 'Imagine' memorial for
peace was opened in Central Park, New
York, near Lennon's former home. Every
year, thousands gather round the
memorial on Lennon's birthday (October
9th to remember Lennon’s life and work.
In 1990 on Lennon's 50th birthday,
Imagine was played simultaneously in
130 countries. Yoko Ono says, 'I would
like us to remember and celebrate John's birthday as a day of love because he was a
man of love and because love is much needed at this time.'
In 1999 the lyrics to the song were voted the UK's favourite in a BBC poll. The
song itself was voted the second favourite song of the millennium (after Queen's
Bohemian Rhapsody).
In 2000 the Steinway piano Lennon used when he was writing Imagine was
sold to pop star George Michael for £1.6 million - the highest price ever paid for a
piece of pop memorabilia. It is now in a museum in Liverpool, Lennon's home town.
The pair of glasses which Lennon wore while he was writing the song were also sold
for £6,000.
In 2001 the airport in Liverpool was renamed John Lennon Airport.
In 2004 a musical show about John Lennon’s life - Imagine - opened in New
York. Twelve actors played the part of Lennon from his earliest years to his death.
The dream of Imagine lives on!

What they said about the song: 'I don't know what the music of the future
will sound like, but I believe a song like this is one that can be enjoyed by all
generations to come.'
Lennon fan on the Internet 'This was the song which John really wanted to
communicate to the world. So he really made it very sweet and simple - to get the
message across.'

WHO WROTE IMAGINE?

Imagine, John Lennon's most famous song, was recently voted 'Britain's favourite
song of all time'. It's an idealistic song about peace and the hope for a better world.
'Imagine all the people living life in peace.' The song was a big hit in 1971, and again
in 1980 when Lennon was murdered in New York. It became a hit for a third time
after the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. But who really wrote the song?
Until recently the answer to this question was always John Lennon. However, on a
TV programme this week Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, spoke for the first time about
how she, in fact, helped to write the song.
Ono said that the idea and inspiration for Imagine came from some of her poems that
John Lennon was reading at that time.
The poems began with the word 'Imagine': Imagine a raindrop, Imagine a goldfish."
Ono said, When I was a child in Japan during the Second World War my brother and
I were terribly hungry. I imagined delicious menus for him and he began to smile. If
you think something is impossible, you can imagine it and make it happen.'
In an interview just before he died, Lennon admitted that Yoko deserved credit for
Imagine. He said, 'A lot of it - the lyrics and the concept - came from her, from her
book of poems, imagine this, imagine that.' Lennon said that he was 'too macho' to
share the credit with her at the time.
Ono said that some of the song was written when they were flying across the Atlantic
and the rest was written on the piano in their bedroom at their home in England. Ono
said,
'The song speaks about John's
dream for the world. It was
something he really wanted to say. Imagine became a popular song for peace activists
everywhere.
In March 2002 the airport in his home town of Liverpool was re-named John Lennon
Airport. A sign above the main entrance has a line from Imagine: ‘Above us only sky’

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A ZARA SHOP?

You probably have because it's one of
the fastest-growing chains in the
world. The person behind Zara is
Amancio Ortega. He is the richest
man in Spain, but very few people
know his face. There are only two
official photographs of him, and he rarely gives interviews. Although he is a
multimillionaire businessman, he doesn't look like one - he doesn't like wearing
suits or ties, and prefers to wear jeans and a shirt.
When he was young he worked as a shop assistant in a clothes store, but he
always dreamed of having his own business. In 1963 he started a small
company which made women's pyjamas. In 1975, at the age of 40, he opened his
first clothes shop in La Coruña, a small city in north-west Spain, and named it
Zara. Now you can find Zara shops al over the world, from New York to Baku to
Singapore. So why is Zara so successful?
The main reason is that Zara reacts incredibly quickly to the latest designer
fashions, and produces clothes which are fashionable but inexpensive. Zara can
make a new line of clothes in three weeks. Other companies normally take about
nine months. The clothes also change from week to week - so customers keep
coming back to see what's new. It produces 20,000 new designs a year - and none
of them stay in the shops for more than a month.
So if you've seen a new jacket or skirt you like in a Zara store, hurry up and buy
it, because it won't be there for long.
THE WORLD’S MOST EXPERIENCED DRIVER?
One of Scotland's most active
centenarians, Lady Morton, has been
a driver for nearly 80 years, although
she has never taken a driving test. But
last week she had her first ever
accident - she hit a traffic island when
she took her new car for a drive in
Edinburgh.
Lady Morton, who celebrated
her 100th birthday in July, was given
the Nissan Micra as a surprise present. Yesterday she talked about the accident. I
wasn't going fast, but I hit a traffic island. I couldn't see it, because it had no
lights, which I think is ridiculous. But I am all right and luckily my car wasn't
badly damaged.
In spite of the accident, she is not planning to stop driving. ‘Some people
are just born to drive, and I think I am one of them. I've never taken a test, but
I've been a good driver since the first time I got in a car. I'm musical, so I listen to
the sound of the car to know when to change gear.
Some people are very rude - they ask me if I'm still driving at my age. It really
annoys me’
Lady Morton bought her first car in 1927. The main change she has
noticed since then is the traffic. 'It's appalling. I don't mind it, because 1 am
experienced, but I feel very sorry for beginners.'

THE STORY OF OPERA HOUSE

The history of the opera
theater building is quite interesting. In
1910, a famous female singer came to
Baku. Her melodious voice, beauty,
and charm attracted the attention of
Baku's millionaires. The eldest of
the Mailov brothers, who were fish
and caviar merchants, tried their best
for the guest and presented her with
diamond rings, earrings, pearls and
gold pieces, garments, necklaces,
bracelets, and earrings. The singer performed concerts in many different buildings.

When her tour ended, they asked the lady when she would come back to our city.
The lady, shaking her head, replied, "Probably never. Because I am not used to
performing in circus and casino halls. In your beautiful, wealthy Baku, there is no
suitable opera house where a singer can show her talent and skill." Mailov learns of
this and asks, "Madam, where are you going now, and for how long?" The singer
announces that she is going on tour to Japan and will return in a year. Mailov says
that in a year, our city will have a suitable building ready for her honor. They agree.
Mailov hired architect Bayev to design the opera house and tells him that it should
not only look like the Tbilisi opera house but should be even more beautiful. Hacı
Zeynalabdin Tağıyev hears about this situation, and when they met, Hacı
Zeynalabdin says, "I can't believe it; to build such a building in a year. It's a
difficult task." Mailov smiles and says, "Haji, let's make a deal. If the building is
not ready within a year, I will complete it and hand it over to you, and the expenses
will be on me. No, if I complete it, you will pay for the costs, and the building will
be mine." They agree. Mailov completes the building in eight months instead of a
year. Mailov sends a telegram to the singer lady, who comes to Baku and
participates in the opening of the opera, singing the first aria. The city's wealthy
individuals, musicians, and theater masters attend the opening. When the singer
finishes her performance, money rains down on her head. The stage is covered in
flowers from end to end.

Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev in Germany

On the day when the First World War was announced, all Russian nationals
in Germany were captured and sent to special camps. Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev
was on vacation with his family in Germany. Taghiyev's daughter recalls, "Our
whole family was in Germany. My father received treatment there for a month, and
we were relaxing. In the late afternoon, a Russian priest came to my father and said
that the Russian ambassador had sent for him, telling him, 'Haji must leave quickly.
The Germans are declaring war on Russia. After the announcement is published in
the newspapers, they will not allow Russian nationals to return home; they will
keep them as prisoners.' When we arrived in Berlin, news of the war had already
spread, and there was no space to move in the Station
Square. Germans were shouting 'Russian... Russian...
Russian...' They dragged away the daughter of a
former Caucasian Ruler through the streets by her hair. We couldn't leave the
station building. Two hours passed, and my father said, 'Everyone should take their
luggage and come behind me.' He went ahead, and we followed him onto the
square. At that moment, the police were waiting for us. They put us in a car. My
father said, 'Take us to the Esplanade hotel.' They refused to accommodate us there.
We tried all the hotels in the city, but to no avail. Finally, we were given a place in
a distant neighborhood hotel. They didn't want to give my father even a penny of
the 100,000 manats he had in the Berlin bank. My father went to the Turkish
embassy, found himself in a desperate situation, and asked for help. The Turkish
ambassador directly appealed to the German Emperor II Wilhelm to assist the most
famous oil millionaire of the Muslim world to return home to Baku. Undoubtedly,
Wilhelm was aware of Taghiyev. Undoubtedly, Wilhelm had his own
considerations, his own calculations in allowing Haji's family to leave, considering
the vast wealth of Baku oil. In Baku, there were German oil industrialists, traders,
and technical-financial specialists led by Baron Beckendorf, the oil magnate.
Emperor Wilhelm personally ordered a ship for us and a special cruiser to protect
us from the many mines at sea. Initially, they sent us to Copenhagen. The cruiser
went ahead, and the ship followed it to avoid hitting mines. We arrived in Finland
and then in St. Petersburg.

EXTRAS
Spasibo Zeynalabdin
At that time, it was customary to give nicknames. The
history of the Spasibo nickname is interesting. When a man from
Icherisheher named Zeynalabdin saw the Shah giving medals to
others, he also dreamed of receiving a medal. He went to the
governor of Baku and requested to donate his caravanserai in
Icherisheher to the Shah's children. The governor felt angry at
him, saying that the Shah's children are not in need of his
dilapidated caravanserai. Zeynalabdin respectfully replied, "Sir,
when I say the Shah's children, I mean the soldiers. They are also
the Shah's children." When the governor became aware of the
request, he received a letter from Zeynalabdin and sent it to St.
Petersburg. Zeynalabdin frequently visited the governorship near
the Tazepir Mosque, asking for a response. One day, the governor called Zeynalabdin and
informed him that His Excellency had accepted his request: empty the caravanserai, clean it up,
and prepare it because we will move the soldiers there in a day or two. Zeynalabdin, joyfully
asked what favor His Excellency had granted him, and the Governor looked at the paper and said,
"He has written 'Thank you' to you." From that day on, the man's name became "Spasibo
Zeynalabdin."

The Baku Municipility

The Baku municipality was the wealthiest
municipality in Russia. While the mayor of Tiflis, the
capital of the Caucasus, received a salary of 4,000
manats a year, the millionaires of Baku, with their lavish lifestyle, invited the mayor Rayev with
the salary of 20,000 manats a year from the city of Kursk, to take over the municipality. However,
ministers of the Russian Empire received a salary of only 15,000 manats a year. The common
people of Baku had often criticized these millionaires in the newspapers. Rayev also brought his
fellow citizens from Kursk to Baku and employed them with high salaries. He would order all
necessary supplies and equipment for the city from the factories in Kursk. Once, during a meeting
of the Duma, one of the municipality members, Kerbalayi Israfil Haciyev, stood up and said, "Mr.
Rayev, for the past four months, the position of the Muslim Sheikhulislam has been vacant, so if
possible, we could also bring a Sheikhulislam from Kursk..."

THE STORY OF HAJI HAJIAGA

One of the millionaires of Azerbaijan was
Haji Hajiaga. He owned numerous guesthouses,
caravanserais, and ships carrying passengers and
cargo in the city. Once, Haji traveled to St.
Petersburg and purchased a lot of goods. However,
at the port, they told him they couldn't accept more
cargo, and they could only do it again in summer,
after six months. Haji was worried about the cost of
storing the cargo for half a year and felt almost
driven mad thinking about it. He tried every
avenue but couldn't find a solution. Feeling
distressed, he began wandering the streets. When he reached a large church,
exhausted, he sat down. An old man approached him and advised, "Don’t turn your
back to the Tsar's palace and sit, they often check here with binoculars and might
come and arrest you." Hajiaga stood up and started wandering among the marble
tombs, sat by one grave, and cried as if
there were no tomorrow. Not half an
hour passed when he suddenly saw two
officers approaching and saying,
"Come with us, let's go." They brought
him to the palace of the king. There
were a man and a woman dressed in

lavish clothes. At that moment, Haji realized it was Tsar Nicholas. He asked Hajiaga
who he was and why he had come and why he was crying next to the grave. The
woman also approached him. He explained that he had come from Baku. At that
moment, Hajiaga already knew that they were the graves of royal families. Hajiaga
answered that in our religion, the king is God's representative on earth. Crying and
praying for them is an obligation, our duty. It was obvious that the king was pleased
with what he said. When the Tsar learned why Hajiaga was there, the king ordered to
solve his problem as soon as possible. Several years later, Haji Hajiaga is invited to
St. Petersburg. When he arrives at the station, two officers come to meet him and
take him to the place where the carriage is waiting. Haji Hajiaga asks whose
carriage it is. They inform him that the Tsar himself sent the carriage for him. Haji
Hajiaga says, "Let's go. The common people don't ride in the king's carriage; the
king's carriage goes ahead, and the commoners walk behind it as pedestrians... This
itself is a great honor, great joy...".
AGA MUSA NAGHIYEV
Once Agha Musa arrives at the mine and
observes the workers gathered around the
bonfire, enjoying their lunch break. Then the
person-in-charge of the project lights his
cigarette with a matchstick. Agha Musa tells
him not to come to work starting from next day.
When asked for the reason, he answers: “there is
bonfire in front of you but you are wasting a
matchstick. If you don’t understand the worth of
your belongings, you will never comprehend
mine either”
Once, there was a charity event in Taghiyev’s residence. Guests were
warmly welcomed by Tagiyev’s wife, Sona khanim. Two young girls were
accompanying her, each carrying trays in their hands. When Agha Musa entered
the hall. She approached him. Agha Musa hesitantly put 3 manats on the tray.
Sona khanim said “Agha Musa, just a while ago, your son, Agha Ismayil put 100
manats on the tray but you …”. He interrupted her, saying: “Of course he did!
whose son is he? A millionaire, Agha Musa. And who am I, Miss Sona? Just the
son of Naghi, the hay seller.

The First Car Of Baku And Its Expensive Horn

The people of Balaxani were
one of the richest in Baku. When
they went to parties, especially
weddings, they wore fancy clothes `
that amazed everyone. They loved `
showing off their wealth and would
often brag about it. If they had a
disagreement, they would solve it
by giving money.
When they went to the bathhouse, they would walk confidently. Even
when they were drunk, they would confidently point to any wall and say, "The
door is over there." They would insist on leaving from that spot, making
everyone move out of their way. Sometimes, they would even bring a builder to
break down walls to clear a path.
Here's a story about one of these wealthy people: After taking a bath, the
man was walking to the "Qosha-qala" gate. There, he saw Haji Zeynalabdin
Tagiyev's car parked nearby. (Tagiyev was the first person to bring a car to
Baku). He asked the driver to take him to the village. The driver said it's too
expensive, but when the man insisted, he said the price was 25 manats to get rid
of him, which was equal to buying a good cart and 2 horses at that time. The man
agreed to pay.

As they drove through town, the driver honked at people, making them
stay away from the main road. When the driver didn't honk the horn enough, he
insisted to play it more. The driver told him it would be extra to play it, and the
man agreed. The total price was 25 manats for the car and 35 manats for the horn
at the end of the trip. When they arrived in Balaxani, everyone gathered around
the car and asked about his experience of the car trip. He said the car was cheap,
but the horn was very expensive.
