CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, sampling procedure, research

instrument, data collection and the data analysis.

3.1. Research design

The research implements a descriptive research design with the aim of

characterizing the characteristics of the population or phenomenon under

investigation. In particular, the study aims to describe the impact of social

media on the student’s mental health.

The study approach was employed by the researchers to collect data in

order to ascertain whether or not social media have an impact on student’s

mental health. Social media usage does not always result in a pupil having a

decreased sense of their mental health. Nevertheless, through surveys, the

researchers observed the students in their typical usage of social media.

3.2. Sampling procedure

50 respondents are the study’s target population. 25 students in grade

12 HUMSS (A) and 25 students in grade 12 HUMSS (B) are the sample size

of the study. Due to descriptive, non-experimental nature of the research

design, the researchers will employ probability sampling method. The

researchers will choose their respondents at random so that they can collect

the necessary data to address the problem statement.

3.3. Research instrument

1
Performance measurement are used to assess an individual’s

performance in different regions. It might be the student’s mental health, or

self-esteem and analyzing if there is a relationship between these

performance measure and the student’s performance at school.

In order to collect the data, the researchers used survey questionnaires

that was consist of ten (10) questions that made by the researchers with the

help of the internet resources. In response to the following questions, the

participants gave five possible answers; (1) Always, (2) Sometimes, (3) Often,

(4) Rarely and (5) Never.

3.4. Data collection

A letter of granting authorization to conduct a survey was delivered to

the principal at Libertad National High School. After that, the participants were

given a survey questionnaires with always/sometimes/often/rarely/never

answers by the researchers. The survey responses were examined through

the student's conduct and academic standing. A letter of permission was sent

to the school principal and grade 12 HUMSS section (A&B) advisers at

Libertad National High School to conduct the survey.

3.5. Data analysis

Before validating the data collected using a survey questionnaire,

researchers organized and compiled it. For this study, the researchers

employed the percentage formula to analyze and comprehend the relevant

interpretation of the collected data.

4
The impact of social media usage on the mental health of grade 12

HUMSS students was determined using a simple percentage and frequency

method, as shown in the calculation below.

P is the total percentage,

F is the total frequency; and

N is the total number of respondents.
