INTRODUCTION:

PLAY THE VIDEO

SLIDE 1: Faika: The videos you just watched were accumulations of news reports about
teenagers about our age and adults doing some dangerous internet challenges found on social
media apps.
Paraaha: We are GROUP (whatever group we are bro idk 💀💀), my name is Paraaha, my
groupmates are Faika, Tasveed and Jabir and our topic is: The Effects of Social Media on Us.

SLIDE 2: Jabir: In today’s presentation we will explain what social media is, some effects of it
and talk about more dangerous challenges like the ones in the video. We’ll end the presentation
on a positive note and a question answer session!

SLIDE 3: Hi everybody my name is Tasveed and I will be introducing you to Social Media and
talking about what it is

SLIDE 4: TASVEED: So i’m sure all of you here have social media right? Like Instagram, Tiktok,
etc? If you have Social Media please raise your hand *wait for everyone to raise their hand*
alright so i was right most of you do have social media, and you do know what it is but let me
just give a brief explanation of it. The term social media refers to a computer-based technology
that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through virtual networks and
communities. Social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of
content, such as personal information, documents, videos, and photos.
So why do people love it so much? The reason why it’s so loved is because it gets addicting
talking to your friends watching short or long videos and seeing some pictures. Using social
media can lead to physical and psychological addiction because it triggers the brain's reward
system to release dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical.

Slide 6: So what does it do for us? Social media platforms allow users to have conversations,
share information with each other and even web content. There are many different types of
social media so there are a lot of different customizable options that they add. But at the end of
the day all social media have some way to have conversations, share info and web content.

Slide 7: There are more than 3.8 billion social media users around the world. Social media is an
ever-changing and ever-evolving field, with new apps such as TikTok and Clubhouse coming
out seemingly every year, joining the ranks of established social networks like Facebook,
YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. By 2023. Social media is used for a very long time once
people get used to it, in fact on average social media is used 145 minutes per person each day!

Slide 8: Okay thank you for paying attention to my part of the ppt, now its time for my teammate
Jabir to present, Jabir take the stage!
Slide 9: Hello everybody my name is Jabir and I will be talking about some Bad Effects of social
media.

Slide 10: Jabir: So can social media worsen your health? Yes, social media can cause you to be
more upset which can lead to unhealthiness and other health problems. There can also be
pressure in social media that can cause dangerous effects on your body, such as social media
challenges. Social media causes issues for your mental health, which will lead to problems to
your physical health. Physical health issues such as obesity. There are youtubers who eat
extremely large amounts of foods for entertainment and people can do social media challenges
that are extremely dangerous such as the Tide Pod Challenge due to pressure from others.
Can social media kill you? Well it is a bit of a stretch but Social media can indirectly kill
you. Some people commit suicide or get severe health problems and diseases from social
media and pressure from social media. Some social media scams can ruin people’s lives. Social
media can also get people to commit crimes which can get people arrested and sometimes
killed. Some people have killed or robbed places, just to show it on social media or show their
identity. Some people have committed suicide due to a scam getting their private parts and
information leaked unless they pay money. Others can get depressed from seeing people’s
“perfect lives” and feel like they are not good enough.

Slide 11: Social media can be either good or bad for friendships as social media can make you
too invested online and your friends may start to grow apart from you if you spend too much
time there, causing them to not be friends with you. However, social media can make people
meet new friends using interests that are found only on computers or online. Social media can
also cause you to become closer to your friends, by being able to interact with them on things
such as DM’s and stories.

Slide 12: Social media can often spread fake news. Some people can have permanent damage
to their body or even die from fake news. A lot of people think that vaccines cause autism, or
make their children less intelligent. This is obviously nonsense, but people still believe it causes
their children to be not vaccinated, causing them to have health problems that can affect their
lives.

Slide 13: Social Media can often cause depression and high expectations and a worry that they
aren’t perfect. Social media can worsen your health and sleep leading to a less happy life.

Slide 14: Thank you for listening to my part, here is my groupmate Faika to give you some more
bad effects.

Slide 15: Thanks everyone, Hi everyone its me Faika and i’m here to continue the last part and
tell you some more bad parts, so lets begin, or continue.

Slide 16: Some of you may think I'm exaggerating, but there has actually been many crimes
committed because of social media. The most notable one has to be the popular TikTok trend,
“devious licks'', where students actually just steal things from their school bathrooms and
classrooms, things like soap dispensers, or even whole basins and urinals, etc. This trend
became so popular that schools in America actually put security guards outside the bathrooms
and required students to sign in with their id every time they went to the bathroom. But, that
doesnt even compare to the most horrifying one of these crimes, which has to be the case of
the Beaver brothers, Robert and Michael, who murdered their own family brutally in order to get
viral on YouTube. The brothers had their own YouTube channel, and growing up in an abusive
household, with no outside relations or friends, the internet was the only way they could interact
with others. So they decided to start a youtube channel, but they thought to be famous, they had
to do something shocking, so they decided to murder 500 people, film as they do it and upload it
to their channels. They began ordering weapons, like knives, guns, body armor, etc. They even
said the preferred knives as “It made them feel like Ninjas” So when their plan began, they first
decided to kill their family, one by one, their parents and their little siblings. But, 2 of their
sisters, 13 year old Crystal and 2 year old Autumn did survive and Crystal testified against them
in court, and now these murderers are in prison where they belong.

Slide 17: So has Social Media changed the way people think? Social media can also alter many
people's perceptions of the world to an unhealthy amount, the term “Chronically Online”
perfectly describes this. “Chronically online” describes people who spend so much time online it
hinders their ability to effectively communicate about serious topics. An example of something
chronically online that someone said is “why is it so normalized to stop drinking when pregnant,
isn't not wanting your baby to have disabilities kind of ableist? Ableism by the way, is the
prejudice and discrimination against people with disabillities.

Slide 16: Social media can affect the mental health of people in many ways, the examples I
want to talk about today are body image issues and cyberbullying

Slide 17:
Body image issues: Millions of different people are on social media, and many of those people
are models and celebrities who are beautiful and have perfect body. Most people on apps such
as instagram present themselves in the best light, their own perfect selves. When an ordinary
person sees those photos or videos, it can alter their perception of themselves and make them
see themselves in a negative way, seeing an idealized body can cause you to compare yourself
to them and that leads you to look at yourself in a negative light. Having low body image issues
may lead someone to have an eating disorder, eating disorders can lead to things like low body
weight, frequent weight fluctuations and health problems, so if you’re going through anything
like im talking about, you should talk to your consellor or a guardian about it.

Slide 18: "People end up creating unrealistic ideals for themselves based on what they see and
feel distressed when they aren't able to meet those ideas or self-expectations," says Neha
Chaudhary, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and
Harvard Medical School.

Slide 19: Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that takes place online, most commonly on social
media apps such as instagram tiktok, twitter, etc. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or
sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. People can share false
rumors or secrets to humiliate the person whom they are bullying. Cyberbullying is different
from normal bullying, because the things that may be spread online about people stay online
forever and those things can hurt their reputations in the future as schools. Universities. Jobs,
etc can find those. Cyberbullying can not only harm the reputation of the person being bullied,
but the person bullying too. An example of cyberbullying are all the gossip accounts on
instagram account on instagram that spread rumors about our fellow classmates and the
people who send in those messages. Again if you’re going through something similar please let
your counsellor or an adult know.

Slide 20: Thank you so much for paying attention to my part of the presentation again! I’ll pass it
on to Paraaha now!

Slide 21: Thanks Faika, hello everyone im Paraaha and im gonna be sharing some dangerous
social media challenges like the ones you watched on the first video

Slide 22: Some examples of some bad challenges are: The blackout challenge: Perhaps no
social media challenge has proven as deadly as the blackout challenge which encourages kids
to suffocate themselves until they pass. The tide pod challenge, where people eat laundry
detergent pods and the benadryl challenge, where kids overdose on benadryl and try to
hallucinate visions. Some examples of good challenges are the Trash Tag challenge, which
encourages people to clean up trash in their communities. People all around the world are
cleaning up areas around them and posting before and after images across social media.

Slide 23: People have died from these challenges, the blackout challenge resulted in over 80
deaths. A 15 year old girl from Okhlahoma also died while doing the benadryl challenge
Consumer Reports reported that between the Tide Pods' introduction in 2012 through early
2017, eight deaths had been reported due to the ingestion of laundry detergent pods; two of the
eight deaths were children, while the other six were adults with dementia.

Slide 24: So Heavy social media use has been found to lead to an increased risk for mental
health issues, and the fear of missing out on what others are doing is a potential driving factor in
people's participation in social media trends.

Slide 25: How does social media effect the environment? Like every technology, scrolling on
social media has an environmental footprint, using each of the 10 platforms for five
minutes each day would result in 20kg of carbon a year, which is the same as driving in a
car for 52.5 miles. In the past four years alone. Gender reveal parties, an internet trend in
which expecting parents reveal the gender of future baby, have also caused 2 forest fires in
Arizona and California. The fire in california torched 23,000 acres of land and burned down 5
homes and 15 buildings. It killed many animals and one firefighter and it took 23 days to put out.
The couple were arrested.
In Arizona, another gender reveal party burned down over 45,000 acres of land and cost 8
million dollars in damages, as you can see, in the first picture, the arizona couple set off the
explosive device with the blue powder, which means that its a boy, but shortly after, as you can
see in the second picture, everything went haywire and there was a big explosion which caused
the wildfire in Arizona.

Slide 26: Here are some pictures of forest fires.

Slide 27: Thank you for listening, now lets conclude the presentation with all my group mates
together!

Slide 28: FAIKA: Social media always isn’t so bad. Social Media can help us build more
relationships and stay connected with people we love, communicate with them, be more
creative, be motivated and it helps us find our voices

PARAAHA: With things like Team Trees and Team Sea’s by YouTubers Mr. Beast and Mark
Rober, projects in which with every dollar donated by people, they plant one tree or remove one
pound of trash from the ocean, social media challenges help the environment too. With the
#trashtag challenge people clean up littered areas and post it.

FAIKA: Social media can be a fun place where you can make memories and just have a good
time too, but too much of anything is never good.

Slide 29: TASVEED: You should limit the amount of social media you use everyday as too
much of everything is never good, You can also spend time with your friends in real life and also
experience real life more rather than staying on social media 24/7

JABIR: Remember that there are many lies on social media, so don’t believe everything you see
there, and also remember to never let anything you see there get to your head.

*****THANK YOUS HAHAHSASAAHSAHA*****
