IX E / Physics / Worksheet 1 / Force / Answers

Forces are pushes or pulls and can be caused by

Weight(due to gravity) W
acting at an objects Centre of Gravity

Tension(stretching)or Compression(squashing)

Normal ReactionN from contact with a surface

FrictionF resisting sideways movement between surfaces in contact

Dragor air resistance from opposing motion through a fluid

ThrustT or driving force from an engine or motor

LiftL from an aircraft wing

Upthrustfrom buoyancy in a fluid

There are also forces from Electric, Magnetic and Nuclear sources.

Forces are VECTORS and so their direction is important when adding them to find the
Resultant Force acting on a body.

When these forces are in BALANCE or EQUILIBRIUM they add to zero and the object will
NOT ACCELERATE it will stay either stationary or move at a constant velocity.

If they do not add up to zero the object will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force.
Equilibrium means the Resultant Force =Zero
Adding Forces (as vectors)
Add the following forces acting on these bodies. Show the resultant as a Force vector.

1.
10N 20N
resultant= 10N

2.

10N 5N
resultant= 5N

3.

10N 15N
resultant= 0N

4.
12N 4N

4N resultant= 12N

5.

5N 22N resultant= 17N

6. 3N
7N 7N

resultant= 5N

7. (you will need to use Pythagoras)

4N
resultant= 5N

8.

8N 12N

7N resultant= 5N

9.

F1=5000N F2=15 000N

F3=15 000N F4=3000N

resultant= 2000N

10.

Weight = 750N;

Tension in Rope 700N

Normal reaction from cliff 40N

Friction from Cliff = 50N

resultant= 40N
Drawing Force diagrams
Draw the vectors representing all of the forces acting on the objects shown in the diagram.

Make the length of each vector represent the size of the force acting.

1. Object slides at a constant speed without friction.

2. Object slows due to friction

3. Static friction prevents sliding

4. Object slides without friction

5. Object suspended from the ceiling

6. Object also suspended from the ceiling

7. Object is motionlesson a slope held by a post

8. Object pulled by rope at an angle to the surface

9. Object pushed by a rod at an angle

10. Object falling with no air resistance

11. Object falling at constant (terminal) velocity

12. Object towed at steady speed by a helicopter
