Module/Topic UNIT I: God's Plan of Love for Humankind
LESSON 5: Mary and Her Fiat to God's Plan of Love
Week no. /Duration Wk 14 120 minutes
Instructional Materials Aflame with God’s Love Grade 10

Overview (Introduction)
 Mary's Fiat signals her cooperation with the saving work that her Sone
was to accomplish. It is the beginning of the Incarnation of the Son of
God.
 As sons and daughters of God and of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we must
imitate the humble response of Mary to God's plan of love.
 Mary gave her consent in faith at the Annunciation and maintained it
without hesitation at the foot of the Cross.
 The Rosary is based on two important events in the fulfillment of the
salvation of humankind— the announcement of the birth of Jesus and
the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.
 Mary is the perfect disciple because she listened to God and opened her
heart to Him. She listened, she obeyed.

Jesus, the only mediator, is the way of our prayer; Mary, his mother
and ours, is wholly transparent to him: she "shows the way"
(hodigitria), and is herself "the Sign" of the way, according to the
traditional iconography of East and West.

Seeing God’s Message in the teachings of the Church

CCC 2674

hesitation at the foot of the Cross. Ever since, her motherhood has extended to
the brothers and sisters of her Son "who still journey on earth surrounded by
dangers and difficulties."28 Jesus, the only mediator, is the way of our prayer;

4
Integrating God’s Message in my life
 The Hail Mary is a prayer that is very close to our heart. When we pray
the Rosary, we contemplate on this prayer ten times for each mystery.
 It is a wonderful prayer that is based on two important events in the
fulfillment of the salvation of humankind-the announcement of the birth
of Jesus by Angel Gabriel and the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.
 The first two lines in the prayer, “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is
with you” comes from the greeting of the Angel Gabriel to Mary when he
was sent to her to tell her that she will bear in her womb the Savior of the
World.
 The third and fourth lines “Blessed are you among women and blessed is
the fruit of your womb, Jesus” is based on the greeting of Elizabeth to
Mary when she came to visit her.
 The last part, the petition, was added by the Church to encourage the
faithful to seek for her intercession.

Mary’s Fiat
 The story of the announcement of the birth of Jesus shows three traits of
Mary. First, it shows her complete trust in God who has chosen to give
her a different mission-to be the mother of the Savior.
 It also shows her obedience to the will of God and her humility as shown
in her words,” Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to
me according to your word.” This is Mary’s “Fiat,” her “Yes” to God’s
plan for her.
 When she said this, she said the words with humility, with a pure heart.
Without hesitation, she obeyed the will of the Father. Her Fiat was an
expression of her complete trust and confidence in God.
 In proclaiming Mary as the Mother of God, we are proclaiming our faith
in Jesus Christ, as human and divine.
 Therefore, the “Yes” or the “Fiat” of Mary is the beginning of the
Incarnation of the Son of God. Through her, the Son of God was given to
us, human and divine, True God and True Man.
 Mary was instrumental in the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of
God, “the Word made flesh and made His dwelling among us (Jn 1:14).”
 The doctrine of Mary being the Holy Mother of God is called Theotokos.
 Mary’s Fiat makes Mary our spiritual mother. Jesus knows that we need a
mother.
 So He gives us His mother to be our mother, too. Mary is our caring and
5
compassionate mother who brings our petitions to Jesus.
 She is closest to Jesus and we believe that she prays for us and leads us to
Him. We do not worship Mary because worship is made to God alone.
 We simply ask Mary, our mother, to bring us close to her Son, Jesus.
 The gift of Mary as our mother teaches us that we, too, in imitation of
her, must humbly respond to God’s plan of love.
 We, too, must follow her discipleship. Mary is the perfect disciple
because she remained faithful in following the plan of God for her Son
even if she saw Him suffered greatly.
 She knew that her acceptance of her role as mother of Jesus “would
pierce her heart with a sword (cf. Lk 2:34-35).”
 But she bravely faced her pain, knowing that she must cooperate with the
divine plan of God. She is the perfect disciple because she listened to
God and opened her heart to Him, and because she listened, she obeyed.
 Mary is the perfect disciple because she never abandoned Jesus.
 She was there at the foot of the Cross while all the other disciples have
left or are in hiding. Mary's fidelity is rewarded by God when she was
assumed to heaven body and soul.
 Her assumption does not alienate her from us, rather it inspires us to be
faithful disciples, too, so that we, too, may look forward with hope to that
day when we shall be with God, our Father and with Jesus in heaven.
 How can we become faithful disciples like Mary? There were events in
the life of Mary and in that of her Son, Jesus, that she did not understand
but her trust in the Lord did not waver.
 Like Mary, there may be events in our life which we may not fully
understand-why we sometimes suffer, why some people are unkind to us,
or why we are not as rich or as famous as the other people we know.
 We may never know the reasons behind all the events in our life but there
is only one truth we are certain of-God holds us in the palm of His hands
and He loves us, as such,
 He will never abandon us. If we hold on to this truth, we can become
faithful disciples like Mary.
 Mary persevered in her pilgrimage of faith, never giving up even in
moments of grief. Our life, too, is filled with moments of grief and
sometimes we may be tempted to give up and find the easy way out.
 We can be like Mary if we put our faith and trust in the Lord. Our
pilgrimage in this life then will not simply be a journey from one point-
birth-to another point-death.
 Our life will be a pilgrimage of prayer, of charity, and of glorifying God
who bestows on us the grace to overcome griefs and to transform our
sufferings into occasions of purification and of becoming closer to His

6
Son, Jesus.
