 Power BI vs Excel
--------⏩ FAST TRACK ⏩-------- Power BI & Excel are better together!
First Power BI Project Overview Ifyou need to create a new report, the decision doesn't have to be "Should this be in Power BI
(Sales Analyst at OfficePlus) (3:46)
or Excel?". You can have both if you load your data to Power BI.
Section 2A: Tour of Power BI as you You see if your starting point is Power BI then you can:
Build Your Report
Create reports in Power BI which means you'll have web-based reports which work from
any browser, Smartphone, Teams etc.
Create reports in Excel from your Power BI model which means you can continue to create
Excel dashboards if you want.
If your starting point is Excel, you'll limit your option to number 2 only.
Power Query and Power Pivot, then Power BI is the next logical step. You've already learnt
i.e.,
50% of Power BI already. You just need the other half which are creating visuals & publishing
and sharing reports. Which honestly are the easier, more inviting side of Power BI.
Power Query is used to connect to and clean data --> the interface is nearly identical to
Power Query in Excel.
Data model & DAX to relate the data and create calculations --> this is very similar to Power
Pivot & DAX.
Creating visuals (tables, charts etc.), reports & dashboards --> in Excel you would create
charts, tables & dashboards
Sharing reports with others and allowing them to make their own separate reports (either
on the web or in Excel) --> in Excel you would send your files to colleagues or save files on
SharePoint or OneDrive.
The part that makes Power BI shine is when it comes to number 3 & 4.
It'salso easier to share your reports with colleagues without worrying that anyone might
overwrite your calculations or make changes to your model. You no longer have to send around
Excel files. Your colleagues can connect to the model you created and create their own reports
(also in Excel) if they want.
Ifyou had created the same model in Excel and someone else wanted to create a report from
your model, you'd have to share your bulky Excel file with them. With Power BI, you just share
the link to your dataset. You'll see this in action at the end of the fast track.
Ifyou're curious about connecting to Excel or you'd like to see how you can bring the data
model you've setup in Power Query and Power Pivot to Power BI, then go ahead and take a
peek at the lectures in last section in the course.
After you complete this course, you'd also become an Excel Power user because you'll know
how to use Power Query, data model and DAX.
You'll learn how to use the most in-demand business intelligence tool in the market today. And
you'll create stunning reports to unlock the power of your data.
