Airport
• Site for takeoff and landing for the air craft
• Types of Airports:
1. Military airport.
2. Civilian airports, based on the scope of service, there are:
Domestic Airports. Regional Airports. International Airports.
• There are three primary components of an airport complex :
1. Landside
2. terminal building
3. airside facilities

Zagreb Airport
• The airport is named after Franjo Tuđman, the first president of Croatia. The country’s largest
airport is the main hub for Croatia Airlines, Zagreb Airport is located south-east of the capital.
Zagreb Airport, now impressively inaugurated in the finale to the big international competition
of 2008 that attracted 17 entries, including three from Pritzker Prize winners. Ultimately, the
international jury awarded the first prize to the Croatian design team.
• Area: 65860 m²
• Location: Coratia
• Year: 2017
Arrivals

First floor
This is the Arrivals level, where both Domestic
and International Arrivals are located. Find also
here the Passport Control and the International
flights connections.
Arrivals

Ground floor
This is the ground level, where the baggage
claim area and meet and greet services can be
found. On the other hand, both Domestic and
International arrival gates are located on this
level.
Departures

Second floor
This is the Departures and check-in level, split into
the Domestic and the International boarding areas.
Find access to the Departure Hall once cleared the
security check (in level 3) and to boarding gates 23-
28 (International) and 21-22 (Domestic).
Departures

Third floor
The third level is where the Security and the
Passport Control is located. Once cleared,
passengers are able to access to the Departures
Hall.
Terminal configuration
• The basic configuration of the terminal Zagreb Airport these peripheral concepts are
based on a specific relationship between aircraft, passenger processing and boarding
areas. And the basic configuration of the terminal was done at zagreb airport on the
Linear Concept.
Terminal configuration
• Linear Concept A simple linear terminal consists of a single
passenger processing area adjacent to single common hold
room area, which, in turn, is adjacent to the aircraft parking
apron. Aircraft boarding is handled via a series of gates that
lead directly to the aircraft parking apron or to passenger
loading. There is a direct relationship between curbside and
the aircraft, and walking distances for passengers are
relatively short.
• And the type of runway in zagreb airport is single runway.
Single runways consist of one lane runway that
accommodates both take offs and landings
• The distance between the airport and the city is
about 10 km,
• More than 800 parking spaces.
• Nature blends near the center of the new
terminal building.

Landside facilities
Landside facilities
• The landside surroundings spatial organization at the
entrance allows the dominance of pedestrian
esplanade in the middle. The traffic functions between
two traffic roundabouts which serve as connecting
points to viaduct ramps leading to or from the
departure level curb at 10.20 m above the ground

• Internal roads and arrival/departure ramps are

flanking the central pedestrian surface. A
passenger car park is situated on the east, and
on the west there is an employee’s parking, bus
and taxi stops and a rent-a-car amenities
including their parking
Design and structure
• Space Frame . A space chrome or space structure is a truss-like, lightweight rigid structure
constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. • Space frames usually utilize a
multidirectional span. and are often used to accomplish long spans with few supports. They derive
their strength from the inherent rigidity of the triangular frame.
Design and structure
• An important part of the terminal's architectural design is the
fluid form of its roof and the tubular passenger piers sprouting
out on each side. This recognizable form will define the new
terminal's identity and its surrounding area.
• In achieving this form, a new innovative solution was used for
the roof structure, comprising a triangular steel grid space truss
for the main building and truss arch vault for the piers.
• The concrete construction of the interior comprises three
dilatations of mixed precast TT beam floor slabs, reinforced
concrete beams and monolithic floor slabs. Horizontal forces
are supported by 4 concrete cores and shear walls. With a gross
building area of 65.800 m2 and a starting capacity for 5 million
passengers per year, Zagreb airport is to become a major air
traffic regional center.
Design and structure
• Flexibility of conceptual scheme allows for adaptability with open spaces formed by
predominantly 14.40 x 14.40 m modular column grid at the concrete base. Post-stressed
reinforced concrete structure is built on a grid pattern with various spans that are multipliers of
the base module: 7.20 m, 14.40 m, etc.

EXAMPLE OF AN AIRPORT
Khartoum international airport in khartoum
Khartoum International Airport
• Khartoum International Airport, opened in 1947, is the largest in Sudan, serving not only the
metropolitan area of the capital, but the whole country. It operates with domestic and
international flights to destinations in Africa and the Middle East.
Arrivals

1. When the plane arrives at apron, which is the last

point of the plane, the passengers are transported to 3
the terminal.
2. Then after that the passports are checked.
3. And then receive the bags.
4. The last procedure is the customs procedure.
Departures
