MEC2047S – Engineering Dynamics Tutorial 1
𝒌
̂
1. At the Takealot collection point in Midrand,
packages are slid down a spiral ramp from the
warehouse to the front desk. The position of a box ̂
sliding down the ramp can be described by: 𝒓 =
2 sin(2𝑡) ̂ + 2 cos(𝑡) ̂ − 2𝑡 𝒌 m, where t is in
seconds and the arguments for the sine and cosine are
in radians.
(a) Determine the velocity and acceleration of the box
when it slides into the recipient’s hands at 𝑡 = 2 s.
(b) What is the magnitude of the velocity at this point?

2. A skateboarder jumps a ramp. She leaves the end of the ramp

(A) at an initial velocity of 𝑣 . If she strikes the ground at B,
determine 𝑣 and her time of flight.

3. A racing car travels around a circular track that

has a radius of 300 m. If the car increases its speed
at a constant rate of 7 m/s2, starting from rest,
300 m determine:
d
(a) The time needed for the car to reach an
acceleration of 8 m/s2; and
(b) The speed at this point.

4. The slotted arm OA forces the small pin to move

in the fixed spiral guide defined by 𝑟 = 𝐾𝜃. Arm OA starts from rest
at 𝜃 = 𝜋/4 and has a constant counterclockwise angular acceleration
𝜃̈ = 𝛼. Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the pin P
when 𝜃 = 3𝜋/4.

5. A rollercoaster starts from rest at A and its speed

increases at 𝑎 = (6 − 0.06𝑠) m/s . Determine the
magnitude and direction (specified as an angle relative to
the tangential direction) of its acceleration when it reaches
B, where 𝑠 = 40 m.

1 (a) 𝒗(𝑡 = 2 s) = −2.61 ̂ − 1.28 ̂ − 8𝒌 m/s, 𝒂(𝑡 = 2 s) = 6.05 ̂ + 0.832 ̂ − 4𝒌 m/s ; (b) 𝑣(𝑡 = 2 s) = 8.61 m/s
2 (a) 𝑣 = 6.49 m/s; (b) 𝑡 = 0.890 s 3 (a) 𝑡 = 4.87 s; (b) 𝑣 = 34.1 m/s 4 𝑎 = 10.75 𝐾𝛼
5 𝑎 = 6.03 m/s at 53.4° from the tangential direction.
