Read and complete the email with the sentences a−g. There is one sentence
11
you don’t need to use.

Hi Joc!

It’s been such a long time since I last wrote to you. I’ve been meaning to write for ages but time flies, doesn’t
it? (0)a Are you enjoying the new job? How’s Luke? It must still feel quite new but I’m sure you’re getting
used to it all.

Well, I don’t know where to start with all my news. I knew that this year would be a good one but I certainly
didn’t imagine how much my life would change. (1) .... You are one of my best friends after all and we’ve
shared so much in the past.

Anyway, let me start at the beginning! I was invited to a New Year’s Eve party and must say I didn’t really
feel like going, but I’m very glad I did because Rob was there. (2) .... He was talking to Lucy, who’d
organised the party so I went up and introduced myself. And by the end of the evening I’d fallen in love! Of
course we exchanged phone numbers and we went on our first date about two days later. We started going
out and I’d say we probably saw each other three or four times a week.

What can I tell you about him? Well, he’s a doctor and he works at the local hospital. He’s tall and slim with
dark wavy hair and bright blue eyes with a lovely smile. (3) .... He makes me laugh so much. He’s also very
sensitive and generous and he’s a fabulous cook!!

After we’d been going out for a few months he asked me to marry him so we got engaged. We got married
last week. We would have invited all of our friends but we decided to have a very small wedding just with our
families as we wanted to spend the money on a special honeymoon. After the wedding service, we had a
reception in the local hotel and now for the surprise ... we’re flying to Sydney tomorrow!! (4) ....

We’re going to spend a month travelling round Australia and where better to start than Sydney? (5) .... My
one regret is that you weren’t at the wedding but this is the next best thing and I hope we’ll have plenty of
time to spend together over the next few weeks.

I attach some pictures of Rob and me on our wedding day. Hope you like them. See you soon.

Love

Marina xx

a Anyway, how’s life in Sydney?

b I suppose I didn’t expect to meet anyone special.
c I know it doesn’t give you much time to prepare but I wanted to surprise you.
d I only wish you could have been here to share it all with me.
e What I really love about him, though, is his sense of humour.
f I know you’ll love Rob and he’s really looking forward to meeting you because he’s heard so much
about you.
g As soon as I walked in I noticed him.

Give students pictures.

 Part 2 An individual ‘long turn’ for each candidate, with a brief response from the second candidate
(you are given a pair of photographs to talk about).
