Hotel Quincy, Singapore

The project comprises new extension of a 14-storey five-star hotel (total

108 Guest Rooms) including A&A to existing Elizabeth Hotel at Mount
Elizabeth Road. GFA of approx. 48,000 sqft. The narrow plot of land
posed a significant design challenge, but this was cleverly remedied by
shaping the building into a rectangular block. Divided into permutations of
a one-third/two-third grid – a signature trait continued into all other
aspects of Quincy – the rooms appear to be stacked on top of each other,
thus generating rhythm in the façade’s design. Furthermore, anodised
aluminum cladding ensures that the building wears well in the tropical
climate.

Hilton Hotel at Melbourne Airport, Australia

Meinhardt were the principal structural consulting engineers for the Hilton
Airport Hotel. The building consists of 9 levels with a roof plant, 272 hotel
rooms and is approximately 170m in length. The hotel structure was built
over an existing 3 level car park, levels 1 to 3 of the hotel consist of a new
stair and lift core built within the existing car park levels to service the
hotel rooms above. Level 4 contains the conference, gymnasium and
swimming pool facilities, while level five contains the kitchen and
restaurant facilities and levels 6 to 9 the hotel rooms.

To minimise the weight and height of the hotel structure levels 4 and 5
were constructed as a steel beam and concrete composite floor system,
with concrete columns, stair and lift cores. Levels 6 to 9 were constructed
as flat plate post tensioned concrete floors with precast concrete dividing
walls at 8400mm centres.
The stability of the building from level 1 to level 5 is via the new stair and
lift core and from level 6 to 9 via the precast concrete dividing walls and
exit stair shafts at each end of the building.

Because of the various design and construction restraints associated with

this particular project many design principals and construction methods
have been adopted to arrive at an unusual and effective design solution.

Mixed-Use Developments
Bugis Junction, Singapore

Bugis Junction - a 150,000 sqm mixed development comprises a 500

room Intercontinental Hotel, an office tower, a retail and entertainment
complex integrating insitu-replicated shophouses for adaptive re-use. A
large 2 level basement carpark able to accommodate 1,000 cars forms an
integrated part of the development.

The most complex challenge was to excavate and construct 9m deep

basement in very close proximity to existing segmentally-constructed
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) tunnels floating in marine clay up to 40m deep.
Top down construction was utilized to minimize ground movement and
save the cost of extensive temporary works.

Meinhardt pioneered the use of electronic monitoring system comprising a

computer controlled targeting and detection system, which permitted
automatic and continuous surveillance of the tunnel displacement in real
time. This system is now adopted on all projects adjoining MRT structures
in Singapore.

One Raffles Link & CityLink Mall, Singapore

Meinhardt provided integrated Civil, Structural and MEP engineering

services for this prestigious project comprising a 30,700 sqm high-tech
office space - tailor-made for financial institutions - and an integrated
6,000 sqm subterannean shopping mall - Singapore’s first - connecting
Suntec City, Marina Square, Raffles City and the City Hall MRT Station.
The 400m long subterranean shopping mall straddling beneath the busy
highways and under-crossing Stamford Canal at 2 locations was
essentially constructed adopting the most cost-effective “cut and cover”
technique. Top-down, underpinning and local tunnelling were adopted for
limited sections to minimise disruption to public roads/services where
traffic diversions could not be satisfactorily effected. The tunnel
incorporating shops and F&B outlets is fully air-conditioned with
sophisticated exhaust and air-filtration systems incorporated in the base
design to ensure fresh and clean environment within the mall.
