DEPARTMENT & PROGRAM: Electrical Engineering & BS- Electrical Engineering

COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: 208406-Embedded Systems CR: 3-0

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course aims at providing the junior-level under-graduate electronic engineering students an introduction
to embedded systems design techniques. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a thorough
understanding of the basic software and hardware concepts necessary for the design of microprocessor and
microcontroller based systems, and, further to provide the students with an in-depth knowledge of specific
devices and the practical considerations and design techniques necessary to design effectively systems using
them. The main focus of this course will be study of microprocessor architecture, memory organization, I/O
access techniques, analog and digital data interface techniques and operating systems.

PRE-REQUISITE: Nil

CO-REQUISITE: Nil

TEXT AND MATERIALS:

Textbook
1. “Embedded System Design”, by Vahid Givargis
2. “Embedded System Building Block”, by Jean J. Labrosse

References Material:
1. “Microcontrollers (PIC)”, online by Nebojsa Matic
2. “Embedded System Architecture”, by Tammy Noergaard

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOME:

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLO/s:
1. Design/Development of Solution (PLO-03): An ability to design solutions for complex engineering problems and
design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health
and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the architecture and operation of modern microprocessor based embedded systems.
2. Comprehend software, hardware and co-design methods to realize efficient embedded systems.
3. Produce C/Assembly language programs targeted on PIC microcontrollers.
4. Design and implement comprehensive project related to PIC microcontrollers.
