CREATING A VULNERABILITY

INDEX USING SPSS


WIZTEK
Stage 1: Import your file in Excel to SPSS

1. Open SPSS file application on


your laptop
2. select file , select data
3.
Choose the excel file type
Select the excel data source

Select the data source file in excel

A SPSS data page appears with two data
sheets appears with variable view and data
view.

SUB COMPONENTS OF
INFRASTRUCTURE INDEX
• Firstly check the key on
the sign of the
subcomponents. In this
case all the
subcomponents have a
negative sign.
• Move to the bottom of
the page to check for
the codes
Choosing the right codes for the indicators
• All negative subcomponents with a
negative sign will be coded as
YES=0 NO=0
• All subcomponents with a positive
sign will be coded as
YES =1 NO=0
GO TO TRANSFORM TAB AND SELECT
RECODE INTO SAME VARIABLES
SELECTION OF
SUBCOMPONENTS:SELECT ALL THE
SUB COMPONENTS
CLICK THE
AAROW RO
ADD TO THE
VARIABLES
BOX
Click on the Old and new values tab
Coding of the Variables
1. Type YES in the old
value box and 0 in the
new value box then
select add
2. Type NO in the old
value box and 1 in the
new value box then click
add
3. Press continue and then
OK
COMPUTING THE INFRASTRUCTURE
INDEX
1. SELECT TRANSFORM
AND CHOOSE
COMPUTE VARIABLE
Add the following text in the target variable
field and in the numeric expression field
Changing Data in string into Numeric
One of the operands for an arithmetic
operation is other than a numeric variable
or numeric expression.

Go to Variable view , on the column type


change all the data from string to numeri
Changing data from string to Numeric View

After changing all


the string data to
numeric press OK
Select Data View Sheet and check if SPSS has
created values for the Infrastructure Index
