Recall/Review
2. is any set of ordered pairs. The set of all first elements of the ordered
pairs is called the domain of the relation, and the set of all second
elements is called the range. (laretion)

TYPES OF FUNCTION
Polynomial Function
A polynomial function is a function that can be
expressed in the form of a polynomial. A
polynomial is generally represented as f(x). The
highest power of the variable off(x) is known as
its degree. Degree of a polynomial function is
very important as it tells us about the behavior
of the function P(x) when x becomes very
large. The domain of a polynomial function is
entire real numbers (R).
Linear Function
A linear function is a polynomial function with a
degree of 1. It is in the form of (𝑥) = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, where
m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept. The graph
of every linear function is always a straight
slanting line.
Quadratic Function
A quadratic function is a polynomial function of degree two in the form (𝑥) =
𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, where a, b, and c are real numbers, and 𝑎 ≠ 0. Quadratic
functions are represented by a parabola with vertex.
Cubic Function
A cubic function has the standard form of f(x)
= ax3 + bx2 + cx + d. The "basic" cubic function
is f(x) = x3. You can see it in the graph below.
In a cubic function, the highest power over
the x variable(s) is 3, where a, b, c and d are
real numbers, and where a is not equal to
zero.
Example
A cell phone company uses the function below to determine the cost, C, in
dollars for g gigabytes of data transfer.
C(g)={25 10g+5 if 0<g<2 if g≥2}
Find the cost of using 1.51.5 gigabytes of data and the cost of using 44
gigabytes of data.
Solution:
To find the cost of using 1.5of data, C(1.5), we first look to see which part of
the domain our input falls. Because 1.5 is less than 2, we use the first formula.
C(1.5)=$25
To find the cost of using 4 gigabytes of data, C(4), we see that our input of 4
is greater than 2, so we use the second formula.
C(4)=10(4)+5=$45
Instructions:
• The class will be divided into four groups.
• Draw the different types of function and a member of the group will
present their output in front of the class.
- Polynomial
- Constant
- Linear
- Quadratic
- Cubic
- Piecewise
• Each group will provide manila paper and marker. (Announce
ahead of time)
• Each group will be graded according to the scoring rubrics with a
total of 20 points.
2. Is a function where more than one formula is used to define the output.
Each formula has its own domain, and the domain of the function is
the union of all of these smaller domains.
a. Cubic
b. Linear
c. Piecewise
d. Quadratic

Assignment
Do a further research about the piece-wise function three to five
sentences. Write it in your math notebook. Bring graphing paper, pencil,
and any types of rulers.
