6. (a) (10 points) State the Mean Value Theorem. SOLUTİON KEY
(b) (10 points) Suppose that a function f satisfies the following conditions :
• f is di↵erentiable on ( 1, 1).
• f (x) = 5x + 5 for x  1 and f (x) = 2x for x 1.
Show that there exists a real number c 2 ( 1, 1) such that f 0 (c) = 1.

Solution:
6
a) Suppose y = f(x) is continous over a closed interval [a, b] and differentiable on the interval's
interior (a, b). Then there is at least one point c in (a, b) at which

f(b) - f(a) 4
= f'(c)
b-a

4
b) Since f is differentiable on(−∞,∞), f is continous over [-1, 1] and f is differentiable on (-1, 1).
Therefore f satisfies conditions of Mean Value Theorem. If we choose a = -1 and b = 1 (f(-1) = 0,
f(1) = 2),

f(b) - f(a) 2-0 5

f(1) - f(-1)
= = =1 by Mean Value Theorem, there is a reel number
b-a 1 - (-1) 2 c ∈ (−1, 1) such that f'(c) = 1.
