all Ss are together?

is not important. How many simple events are in the sample space?

40. You own 4 pairs of jeans, 12 clean T-shirts, and 4 wearable pairs of sneakers.
How many outfits (jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers) can you create?

41. A study is to be conducted in a hospital to determine the attitudes of nurses

selected from a total of 90, how many different samples can be selected?

0.3. If event A is observed, find P (S1 |A), P (S2 |A) and P (S3 |A).

48. Five hundred employees were selected from a city’s large private companies,
and they were asked whether or not they have retirement benefits. Based on
their answers the following table was prepared:

49. The distribution of blood types varies among groups of people. Here is the
distribution of blood types for a randomly chosen person in Malawi.

Maria has type B blood. She can safely receive blood transfusions from people
with blood types O and B. What is the probability that a randomly chosen
Malawian can donate blood to Maria?

50. A committee of 7 people is to be chosen at random from 18 volunteers. The 18


volunteers consist of 5 people from Dedza, 6 from Ntcheu and 7 from Dowa.
Find the probability that the committee will have
(a) 2 people from Ntcheu and 2 from Dowa.
(b) exactly 4 people from Dedza.
(c) include at least 2 people from each of the 3 districts.

51. Three companies A, B and C supply 25%, 35% and 40% of the notebooks to a
school. Past experience shows that 5%, 4% and 2% of the notebooks produced
by these companies are defective. If a notebook was found to be defective,
what is the probability that the notebook was supplied by A?

52. A insurance company has insured 4000 doctors, 8000 teachers and 12000 busi-
nessmen. The chances of a doctor, teacher and businessman dying before the
age of 58 is 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05, respectively. If one of the insured people dies
before 58, find the probability that he is a doctor.

53. It is estimated that 50% of emails are spam emails. Some software has been
applied to filter these spam emails before they reach your inbox. A certain
brand of software claims that it can detect 99% of spam emails, and the prob-
ability for a false positive (a non-spam email detected as spam) is 5%. Now if
an email is detected as spam, then what is the probability that it is in fact a
non-spam email?

54. There are 4 red counters and x blue counters in a bag. 2 counters are removed
from the bag at random. The probability that both the counters taken are

55. The probabilities that A and B will tell the truth are 2/3 and 4/5 respec-
tively. What is the probability that they agree with each other? What is the

56. In a lot of 1200 golf balls, 40 have imperfect covers, 32 cannot bounce, and
12 have both defects. If a ball is selected at random from the lot, what is the
probability that the ball is defective?

57. If a permutation of the word WHITE is selected at random, find the probability
that the permutation
(a) begins with a consonant
(b) ends with a vowel
(c) has the consonants and vowels alternating.

58. One bag contains 4 white balls and 3 black balls, and a second bag contains 3
white balls and 5 black balls. One ball is drawn from the 1-st bag and is placed
unseen in the second bag. What is the probability that a ball now drawn from
the 2-nd bag is black?

59. A businessman has two secretaries. The probability that the one he hired most
recently will be absent on any given day is 0.08, the probability that the other
secretary will be absent on any given day is 0.07, and the probability that they
will both be absent on any given day is 0.02. What is the probability that:
