I. Rationale

Education is one of the things that has changed since the pandemic. Face-to-face

classes were interrupted. The Department of Education came up with a solution and that

is the different learning modalities such as Modular Distance Learning and Online

Distance Learning for students to learn amidst pandemic. Not everyone are able to cope

up with these learning modalities. Some students are unable to attend online classes

considering that they only have limited electronic devices and resources at home. These

factors can have an impact on students' mental health, which can also have an impact on

their academic performance.

Students are affected by stress in a variety of ways (Nilani& Crystal, 2016). As

stated by Barmola (2019) overburden and difficulty of subject are some of the factors

why student’s performance gets distorted. Another factor is Information technology, it is

interesting and distracting at the same time. According to Pascoe, Hetrick,& Parker(2020)

academic-related stress can reduce academic achievement and decrease motivation. Every

student wants to do well in school, whether it's academically or in other ways (Barmola,

2019). Mehdi, Amir, &Azami concluded that the higher the mental health of the students,

the better their educational performance. (2014).

These recent studies are proof that various mental conditions actually affect the academic

performance of students even before the pandemic. Mental wellbeing issues can influence

a student's vitality level, concentration, constancy, mental capacity, and optimism, ruining

their academic performance. These recent studies suggests that depression is related with

poor academic performance, which coinciding misery and uneasiness can increment this

affiliation. With the prevalence of uncertainties brought by the pandemic, a lot have been

anxious about their overall health and wellbeing and one of the sectors that is mainly

affected is the education, especially the students. This study will enlighten the readers

about the impact of the pandemic to students, mentally and academically.

As a consequence, this research will show that there is correlation between mental health

and academic performance of students specially now that we are experiencing a

pandemic. It will show how the pandemic changed the mental wellbeing of students and

eventually their academic performance. Obviously, a lot have been affected by the spread

of the virus. We can’t take away the fact that different sectors are mainly affected and we

ought to not disregard its impact to the students who are struggling to cope with these

changes.
