Autonomous Institute Affiliated to VTU
SEP – 2021 Semester End Make Up Examinations
Programme: B.E. Semester : III
Branch : CIVIL ENGINEERING Duration: 3 hrs.
Course Code: 19CV3PCSOM Max Marks: 100
Course: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS Date: 08.09.2021
Instructions: 1. Answer FIVE FULL questions choosing one full question from each unit
2. Internal choice provided in UNIT-1 and UNIT-2
3. Assume any missing data suitably and clearly state them.

UNIT - I
Important Note: Completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank

1. a) Define the terms : stress, strain and Young’s modulus 06

b) A steel plate of constant thickness 16 mm tapers uniformly from 80 mm 14
width at one end, to 50 mm at the other end in a length of 800 mm. If the
plate is subjected to an axial load of 120KN, find the extension of the
plate assuming E=200GPa. Derive the relevant expression also. Calculate
pages. Revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator will be treated as malpractice.

the percentage error if average area is used for the calculation of

extension.

OR

2. a) Explain : Principal stresses and Principal planes

b) An element is subjected to a tensile stress of 800 N/mm and a 14
compressive stress of 500 N/mm2 on two mutually perpendicular planes.
A shear stress of 200 N/mm2 acts clockwise on the plane of 800 N/mm2
and anticlockwise on the plane of 500 N/mm2 Find analytically
i) Principal stresses and their planes
ii) Maximum shear stresses and their planes
iii) Shear stress on a plane inclined at 30o clockwise to the plane
of 800 N/mm2
UNIT – II

3 a) Establish the relationship between bending moment, shear force and rate 06
of loading
b) A beam 10 m long rests on two supports, one at its right end the other at 14
3m from left end. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 20
KN/m over its entire length and a concentrated load of 60 KN at 3 m from
the right end. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams indicating
all salient points.

UNIT – III

4. a) Explain the terms: pure bending, section modulus, neutral axis and 08
flexural rigidity.
b) A simply supported T-beam has a span of 2.0 m. The flange is 125mm x 12
25 mm and web is 175 mm x 20mm. The beam carries a uniformly
distributed load of 15 KN/m throughout its span. Draw the bending stress
distribution diagram across the section at midspan
OR

5. a) Show that the maximum shear stress is 1.5 times the average shear stress 06
in the case of rectangular cross section.
b) A simply supported beam of span ‘L’ carries a uniformly distributed load 14
of 6 KN/m and has the cross section as shown in Fig. 5(b). Find the span
length ‘L’ to cause a maximum flereual stress of 16 MPa. What maximum
shear stress is then developed?

Fig. 5b

UNIT - IV

6. a) Differentiate between Euler’s theory and Rankine’s theory in the analysis 08

of struts. What are the limitations of Euler’s theory?
b) Find the Euler’s buckling load for a hollow cylindrical steel column of 38 12
mm external dia and 2.5 mm wall thickness. Length of the column is 2.3
m and is hinged at both the ends.
Also estimate the Rankine’s load for this column. Take E=2x105 MPa
1
fc=300 N/mm2, α=
7500

UNIT – V

7. a) Distinguish between thin and thick cylinders, 04

b) A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3:5 is required to transmit 700 KW at 110 16

rpm, the maximum torque being 12% greater than the mean. The shearing
stress is not to exceed 60 MPa and the twist in a length of 3 m is not to
exceed 1o. Calculate the minimum external diameter of the shaft. Use
C=0.8x105 MPa
