CHAPTER 2
ADDITION
A. What is Addition?
The addition is taking the given numbers and adding them all
together, or we can say it is the total sum of all the given numbers.
Example:
Can you find the number of apples in the given figure?
We are given seven apples on one plate and four apples on another
plate. So, we need to add 7 and 4 to find the number of apples in
both buckets.
To add 7 and 4 together, we can count four steps forward from 7 to
the right of the number line.
The symbol for addition is +, known as the plus symbol.
So we can write seven plus four as 7 + 4.

CHAPTER 2
ADDITION
What is an addition sentence?
It is a mathematical expression that shows how two or more values
are added together.
We can write 7 plus 4 equals 11 as
Numbers that are added together are known as addends and the
answer to addition is called the sum of the given numbers. In
addition sentence, the addends are added together to get the sum
of the given numbers.

Addition
You know how to add. Let us add 341,113 and 3224 in three different
orders.

CHAPTER 2
ADDITION
These properties of addition hold true for the addition of large
numbers as well. We add large numbers in the same way we add
smaller numbers. Starting from the ones place, we move left,
adding the digits at each place one after the other.

12. Mr Solkar covered 15,769 km in his car one year, 12,520 km the
next year and 16,485 km the following year. What was the total
distance covered by his car in the three years?
B. Vertical Addition
Now, Let's add 57 and 16 vertically.
Step 1: Write the Step 2: Start adding from the Step 3: Add the
numbers in the ones digit of the given tens digits. (If there
columns as per the numbers. Write the addition was an earn/
place value of the under the ones digit now. If the forward digit, add
digits of the number. sum of the ones digit is larger it along)
than 9, write the ones digit of
the sum under the ones and
carry forward its tens digit to
the tens column.
The numbers with more than two digits can be added vertically. We
start adding from the ones digit and move towards the digits at the
highest place.
Example: Arun bought a designer handbag for rupees 231 and a belt
for rupees 199. How much did he spend together on both items? To
find the total cost, we need to add 231 and 199?
15
CHAPTER 2
ADDITION
We can add the numbers vertically as:
So, Arun spent rupees 430.

D. Addition tricks and Methods
1. Compensation Method :
Example : Add 395 + 126
It is lot easier to do 400 + 126 = 526.
Then take away the extra 5 (that made 395 into 400) to get 521.

Example :
In the school examination, 75236 students passed and 14892
students failed. Find how many students appeared for the
examination.
Solution :
Can you see we have the keyword “How many"? That means we
need to add the two values given.
75236 + 14892 = 90128.
