1: Graphing Quadratic Functions

Main Ideas/Questions Notes/Examples
When graphed, a quadratic equation creates a U-shaped curve called
Parts of the a _______________________.
Graph

Axis of symmetry:

Vertex:

X-intercepts:
Direction and Use Desmos to sketch the following:

types of vertices y = x2 + 2x - 5 y = -x2 + 2x -5

• If ‘a’ is ______________, then the graph opens ___________,

causing the vertex to be a ____________.
• If ‘a’ is ______________, then the graph opens ___________,
causing the vertex to be a ____________.

Examples Directions: Graph each quadratic equation using Desmos. Identify the axis of
symmetry, vertex, domain, and range.
1) y = x2
Vertex: ______________
Axis of Symmetry: ___________
Zero(s): ______________
Domain: ______________
Range: ______________
Max or Min? ___________

2) y = x2 + 2x - 1
Vertex: ______________

Range: ______________
Max or Min? ___________
3) y = - x2 – 8x - 17
Axis of Symmetry: _____________
Vertex: ______________
Zero(s): ______________
Domain: ______________
Range: ______________
Max or Min? ___________

4) y = -(x + 2)2 + 7
Axis of Symmetry: ____________
Vertex: ______________
Zero(s): ______________
Domain: ______________
Range: ______________
Max or Min? ___________

5) y = ½ (x – 4)2 - 6
Axis of Symmetry: _____________

Transformations

Types:
How to find them:

Identify the transformation of each function.

1) y = 4(x + 2)2 – 1 2) y = -x2 + 5

6.2: Quadratic Word Problems

Grapple:
Main Ideas/Questions Notes/Examples

Solving Word Steps:

Problems

Example:

Jason jumped off a cliff into the ocean in Acapulco while

vacationing with some friends. His height as a function of time
could be modeled by the function h(t) = -16t2 + 16t + 480 , where
t is the time in seconds and h is the height in feet.

What is the vertex in context?

When does he hit the water?

Extensions Sometimes you will need to find points that happen

within the graph.

A rock is thrown from the top of a tall building. The

distance, in feet, between the rock and the ground x
seconds after it is thrown is given by f(x) = -16x2 – 4x +
382. How long after the rock is thrown is it 340 feet
from the ground?
Sometimes you will be asked to apply what you know…

In an effort to catch a criminal, a superhero is going to

leap over a building and take a short cut down the ally.
The function f(x) = -16x2 + 150x gives the superhero’s
height in feet as a function of time. Will the superhero
make it over the building if the building is 425 ft high?
(Be sure to support your answer with some math!)

6.3: Solving Quadratic Equations

Finding Steps
Solutions

Examples
1. (𝑥 − 9)(5𝑥 + 2) = 0 2. x2 – 9 = 36

3. 4x2 + 9x = 12

You try:
1) x2 + 40 = 0 2) -2x2 – 10x – 21 = 0

3) 5(x – 2)2 – 45 = 0 4) (2x – 1)(x + 8) = 0

5) 2x2 + 7x + 3 = 12 6) ¾x2 = 48

7) x2 +6x = -9
