 This paper consists of 10 printed pages. Candidates should check the question paper to

(b)The water in a burette is at 30 cm3 level. 50 drops of water fall from the burette and the
average volume of one drop is 0.14 cm3. What is the final water level in the burette?

8. (a) Define density, stating its SI units (1mk).

(b) A cylindrical glass of mass 770g has a height of 8 cm and radius 3.5 cm. Find the
density of the cylindrical glass in cm3 (3mks).

9. A form one student could read the length of the edge of glass block using any of the shown
positions A or B or C below

12. A body weighs 32N in air and 27N when immersed in a certain liquid L. determine the up-
thrust force experienced by the body while inside liquid L. (2mk)

13. (a) State the two (2) factors that affect the surface tension in a liquid explaining how the
factors affect the surface tension (4mks)

(b) The following beaker contains water.

14. (a) Pressure is affected by many factors. Study the diagrams below and give reasons for
effects produced on the ground. (In both cases the feet are of the same person. (2mks).

(b) A brick 20 cm long, 10cm wide and 5 cm thick has a mass of 250 g; determine the
maximum pressure that can be exerted by the brick on a flat surface (3mks).

15. (a)State any two (2) factor which affect pressure in liquids (2mks).

(b) Calculate the pressure due to water experienced by a fish 30m below the surface of the
sea (density of sea water is 1030kg/m3) (3mk).

16. In an experiment of liquid pressure a form one student used a tin with three holes and pour
water to the brim as shown below. The form one student observed jets of water coming out
through holes A, B and C.
(a) Complete the diagram to show the jets of water as they came out through the holes
(2mks).

17. (a) State the principle of transmission of pressure in liquids (1mk)

(b) The figure below shows a simple hydraulic press used to compress a bale of cotton
wool. The cross section areas of A and B are 0.002m2 and 0.30m2 respectively.

Determine
(i) pressure exerted on the oil by the force 160N applied at A(2mks)

(ii) Force produced on B compressing the bale (3mks).

18. (a)Define ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE (1mk).

(b) The following diagram shows one limb of a manometer connected to a gas supply. And
due to the pressure of the gas (pg.) the water level in the other limb has risen a height as
shown.

Given that Pg is the gas pressure and Pa is the atmospheric pressure, ddetermine pressure of
the gas pg. Take atmospheric pressure = 103000N/m2, density of water = 1000kg/m3 and
g=10N/kg (3mks)

19. (a) State the kinetic theory of matter (1mk)

(b) Give two (2) reasons why it is possible to compress gases but not solids or liquids
(2mks).

20. In the figure below ammonia gas and acid gas diffuse and react to form a white deposit on
the walls of the glass tube. The deposit forms near end B.

(a) State which gas diffused faster (1mk).

(b) why did the gas you've named in (a)above diffuses faster than the other one ?(1mk)

(c) The formation of the white deposit on the walls of the glass tube took long to form.
What would you change to ensure white deposit takes a shorter time to form. (1mk).

21. (a) Define Temperature stating its SI units. (2mks).

(b) The following is a metallic strip of metals A and B of different linear expansivity.

23. (a) The following shows a frozen lake in which fish and other aquatic animals and plants

25 In an experiment to demonstrate convection currents in gases, in which a candle lighted


underneath chimney B and burning straw attached to chimney A as shown below.

(b )Give an explanation of what you have indicated in the above figure. (3mks)

26. (a) Explain why many houses in hot areas like Mombasa should be painted in white while
those in colder places like Timboroa should be painted with dull colors. (2 mks)

(b) The ventilators for a room are put near the roof and not near the floor. Explain why? (2mks)
