Total Score 100
SECTION A : 60 marks
1. The following are branches of physics. Elaborate what each one of them entails.
a. Mechanics (1mk).
b. Waves (1mk)
3. State any three (3) requirements that an average laboratory should have to make it
functional such that practical and experiments can be done (3mks).
4. State what first aid measure you would undertake if each of the following accidents
happens to a student in the course of doing experiment in the laboratory.
1. Burns caused by an acid or a base (1mk).
5. State one natural phenomenon that can be explained using physics (1mk)

(b) Calculate the area of a circle of radius 7.0 cm expressing your answer in square
metres. (3mks)
(b)The water in a burette is at 30 cm3 level. 50 drops of water fall from the burette and the
average volume of one drop is 0.14 cm3. What is the final water level in the burette?
(3mks).
(b) A cylindrical glass of mass 770g has a height of 8 cm and radius 3.5 cm. Find the
density of the cylindrical glass in cm3 (3mks).
9. A form one student could read the length of the edge of glass block using any of the shown
positions A or B or C below
3|Page
(b) Name the error which the student would have engage in if he /she used any of the two-
position other than position in (a) above (1mk)
12. A body weighs 32N in air and 27N when immersed in a certain liquid L. determine the up-
thrust force experienced by the body while inside liquid L. (2mk)
13. (a) State the two (2) factors that affect the surface tension in a liquid explaining how the
factors affect the surface tension (4mks)
4|Page
Explain the shape of the meniscus (1mk)
14. (a) Pressure is affected by many factors. Study the diagrams below and give reasons for
effects produced on the ground. (In both cases the feet are of the same person. (2mks).
(b) A brick 20 cm long, 10cm wide and 5 cm thick has a mass of 250 g; determine the
maximum pressure that can be exerted by the brick on a flat surface (3mks).
15. (a)State any two (2) factor which affect pressure in liquids (2mks).
(b) Calculate the pressure due to water experienced by a fish 30m below the surface of the
sea (density of sea water is 1030kg/m3) (3mk).
16. In an experiment of liquid pressure a form one student used a tin with three holes and pour
water to the brim as shown below. The form one student observed jets of water coming out
through holes A, B and C.
(a) Complete the diagram to show the jets of water as they came out through the holes
(2mks).
5|Page
(b) Explain your observation you've indicated above. (2mks)
(b) The figure below shows a simple hydraulic press used to compress a bale of cotton
wool. The cross section areas of A and B are 0.002m2 and 0.30m2 respectively.
Determine
(i) pressure exerted on the oil by the force 160N applied at A(2mks)
(b) The following diagram shows one limb of a manometer connected to a gas supply. And
due to the pressure of the gas (pg.) the water level in the other limb has risen a height as
shown.
6|Page
Given that Pg is the gas pressure and Pa is the atmospheric pressure, ddetermine pressure of
the gas pg. Take atmospheric pressure = 103000N/m2, density of water = 1000kg/m3 and
g=10N/kg (3mks)
SECTION B : 40MARKS
19. (a) State the kinetic theory of matter (1mk)
(b) Give two (2) reasons why it is possible to compress gases but not solids or liquids
(2mks).
20. In the figure below ammonia gas and acid gas diffuse and react to form a white deposit on
the walls of the glass tube. The deposit forms near end B.
(b) why did the gas you've named in (a)above diffuses faster than the other one ?(1mk)
7|Page
(c) The formation of the white deposit on the walls of the glass tube took long to form.
What would you change to ensure white deposit takes a shorter time to form. (1mk).
(b) The following is a metallic strip of metals A and B of different linear expansivity.
.
If metal A has a higher linear expansivity than metal B draw the metallic strip when it has
been.
