Midterm 1
Midterm 1
This test has 12 pages in total, including this page, and is out of 50 marks.
The test is double-sided.
By writing this test, you are agreeing that you are physically and mentally
able to do so. If you do not feel well enough to write this test, raise your
hand right now prior to seeing the test so that we can discuss alternatives and
documentation.
No calculators not are allowed. No other aids may be used.
This test is worth 15% (or 10% or 5%) of your final grade, based on the most
favourable grading scheme for you.
Your solution to each question must be contained in the space on
their designated page.
Part A: Quick Answer [10 marks]
Read each question carefully. Please ensure that you fill in your final answers in the
boxes provided at the right side of the page. Each correct answer is worth 1 mark.
Show your work for part marks.
A1. What are the inputs of the multiplication operator defined for a vector space?
A2. Suppose S = {(1, 1, 1), (1, 1, 0), (0, 0, 1)}. Is S linearly dependent or linearly
independent?
3+2i
A4. Compute 4−5i
.
A5. If S ⊆ V is a subset of a vector space and S contains the zero vector, can S be
linearly independent?
A8. Consider the following set of vectors. S = {(1, 0), (0, 1), (0, 2)} Is (1, 0) a
redundant vector?
(a) Construct a system of equations, such that the solutions will answer the
question.
(c) Solve the augmented matrix using Gaussian Elimination. (Space on next
page provided.)
(d) Is x2 + 2x − 3 ∈ {x2 + 2, x2 + 4, 2x + 5}?
B3. [8 marks] Let W ⊆ R4 be defined as follows.
S1 ∩ S2 = {x ∈ V |x ∈ S1 and x ∈ S2 }.
B6. [4 marks] Let Feven (R) ⊂ F (R) be the set of even valued functions. Prove that
Feven (R) is a subspace.
B7. [4 marks] Let Q(x) ⊂ F (R) such that Q(x) = {ax2 + bx + c|a ̸= 0, a, b, c ∈ C.
That is to say q(x) is the set of quadratic functions. Determine if Q(x) is a vector
space. Justify.
Part C: Extension Question
(The extension questions will include material that we have yet to cover in the class
(we may be covering it shortly). What you will be asked to prove will be only require
techniques that you have used thus far within this class.
