OBJECTIVES
To make the student conversant with the
 Understand the basic functionality of computer system.
 Understand the various hardware and software components and its functions.
 Understand about Number system
 Do basic OS commands
 Understand the operating system as the interface to the computer system.
 Understand the file concepts

UNIT – I Introduction 8
Historical evolution of computers, Generations of computers, Classification of computers –
based on size, processor, Usefulness of Computers. Applications of computers, Block
diagram of computer along its components and characteristics, function of CPU and major
functional parts of CPU.

UNIT – II Memory, Input and Output Devices 8


Types of Memory- RAM&ROM- types of RAM & ROM –Storage Devices & Disks- floppy
disk, CD, DVD, Pen drive, HDD, SSD. Mouse, Keyboard, joysticks, trackballs, Touch screen
– Scanner –Monitor –Printers –Types of printers, Speakers.

UNIT – III Data Representation 8


Definition of data, information –difference between data and information – Number system
– various number systems – importance of binary number system–Conversion from decimal
to binary, octal and hexadecimal –Conversion from binary to decimal, binary into octal and
binary to hexadecimal –hexadecimal number into binary–ASCII System.
UNIT – IV Unix Operating Systems& DOS 8
Hardware and Software–Types of Software’s–Introduction to Operating System(OS) –
Types of Operating Systems –Mainframe, Unix, DOS, Windows, Mac. Unix OS –
Introduction to Unix OS and System V – Basic Unix , Shell commands- Disk Operating
System(DOS) – Basic DOS Commands – Operating System as a resource manager – BIOS
UNIT – V Windows Operating Systems 7
Introduction to Windows OS –Concept of GUI and CUI– Directories and files –features of
Window–components of Window–function of each component of Window– method of
starting a program using start button- Understand maximize, minimize, restore down and
close button.
UNIT – VI File Systems 6
Files: uses of file and folder – method of viewing the contents of hard disk drive using
explore option–control panel, disk defragmentation installation and un installation of the
application software.
