815-202 DESIGN CHECKLIST FOR LIGHTING SYSTEM
1. SCOPE
Important checks in design of lighting system are covered in this
document.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENT
Design guide for lighting TCE.M6-EL-GL-G-815-6300 R3. (Clauses &
annexures referred to in this document pertain in the above design
guide.)
3. DESIGN CHECKS
3.1 Ensure that the following inputs are available before proceeding with
lighting system design.
a) Detailed drawings such as GA drawings, civil, architectural and
roof plan drawings and also drawings of systems such as
ventilation, piping, ducting, cabling, fire alarm, etc.
b) Factors essential for the design such as tasks to be performed,
colour rendering, illumination levels, location, mounting heights,
effects of voltage fluctuations and dips covered in cl. 5.2. These
factors are further elaborated in cl. 5.3 to 5.8.
c) Technical information of luminaires such as utilisation factor
tables, polar curves and lumen output.
3.2 For important terms and definitions in lighting refer Annexure 1. For
sources of light and their characteristics, refer Annexure 2. Types of
luminaires are described in Annexure 3. Check the recommended
illumination Levels from Annexure 5. For areas not covered in
Annexure 5, refer to IS 3646 part II.
3.3 Ensure that approval of illumination levels and type of luminaires has
been obtained from the client as the cost of lighting installation is
directly affected by these parameters.
3.4 Indoor Lighting Design
As described in cl. 8.1.2, carry out design calculations to decide number
of luminaires. Select proper values of parameters such as mounting
height, reflection factors, maintenance factor, utilization factor etc.
Lighting layout then can be finalised as described in cl. 8.1.3.

3.5 Out door Lighting Design
Select proper values of coverage factor, beam spot area, mounting
height, aiming angle, spacing between fixtures, maintenance and
utilization factors etc. as described in cl. 8.3.2.
3.6 Roadway (Street) Lighting Design
3.6.1 Design guide covers design of lighting of roads in industrial premises
only. This design is not dictated by vehicular traffic and hence is simple
as described in cl. 8.5.2. Select proper values of lamp lumens,
maintenance factor, utilization factor for calculation of spacing between
luminaires as described in cl. 8.5.3.
3.6.2 For design concepts covering lighting of roadways and highways refer
to IES lighting hand book and IS 1944. For road lighting layout refer cl.
8.5.4.
3.7 Though the design guide does not make mention of the computer
program developed by TCE, the same should be used and the results
verified by a sample manual calculation. Alternatively, validated
computer programs of reputed vendors may be used.
3.8 Lighting System
3.8.1 Normal AC lighting supply is derived either from lighting transformer or
from PCC/DB. Check availability of such source based on LV system
design for the project. Refer to cl. 9.1 for various factors to be
considered.
3.8.2 Emergency lighting can either be from DG set with suitable change over
facility or with no-break AC lighting system. It can also be from a
suitable DC supply. Select appropriate system and factors such as
required illumination level under emergency occupancy, safe
movement of personal etc. The emergency lighting system is described
in cl. 9.2 and 9.3.
3.9 Provide lighting distribution boards/panels based on lighting circuits
required as well as on fault levels. Ascertain suitability of switch
fuse/MCBs. Refer to cl. 10.0 for choice of lighting DB/panel. In lighting
of remote areas/building which do not necessitate the use of a lighting
panel, a junction box with switch may be provided.

3.10 Type and size of wires shall be chosen carefully as described in cl.
11.0. Copper wire shall be recommended and client approval obtained
for the same. Aluminium conductor wires shall be used for economy
only if insisted upon by client. Provide copper wire for earthing. Where
cables are used, the third core of a 3 core cable should be used for
earthing. Alternately, where single core wires are used, a third wire may
be used for earthing.
3.11 Check the location of lighting DB/panel, balanced loading and limit of
loading on each circuit, selection of type and location of switches,
receptacles as per cl. 12.0 for general guidelines.
