CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.0 INTRODUCTION:
Public Works Department, North Zone proposes to construct a new bridge across halla near
Mukihal village in Talikoti Taluk, Bijapur district. The proposed bridge is approved under head
5054-03-101-0-02-132. Project road is a Major District Road in Karnataka, Talikoti taluk and
traverses from Talikoti to Mukihal. Total length of road is 5km. Road map is shown in figure 1.
This road runs in clayey, gravelly, silty, clayey sand and red soil strata. Land profile is rolling
type terrain and runs in between Dry and irrigated lands. The Minimum to Maximum
temperature varies from 180c to 380c and climate condition is medium cold. The average rainfall
in this area varies from 200mm to 320mm.
Bridge location
• Geotechnical investigations for study of soil strata at bridge site and arrive for
conclusion for type of foundation to be provided.
Existing bridge is having 7.80m overall width and 2.100m clear height, Due to
inadequate vent size water overflows over existing bridge. This causes interruption to traffic
flow causing inconvenience to public. Due to above facts, it was felt that bridge was to be
reconstructed in site with Hydraulic adequacy and improvement with geometrics of road. Hence
feasibility study was carried out and during feasibility it was seen that approach on both sides is
in valley, hence to increase hydraulic adequacy and to improve sight distance FRL of road is
raised.
CHAPTER-2
ENGINEERING SURVEYS AND INVESTIGATIONS
Upon finalization of road alignment and bridge site detailed engineering topographical
surveys, investigations were carried out with respect to hydrological investigations and
environmental impact assessment. The details of each are discussed below;
Topographical Survey at the Bridge site, covering both the Stream locations and both
sides’ approaches of road, has been carried out using Total Station to produce three-
dimensional data. The survey is based on a closed traverse and following land features are
captured and presented in the drawings. All the notations/ symbols (legends) are as per
standards. The data collected are accurate, detailed and exhaustive enough for use in detailed
design stage.
a) Existing road with approaches, river and their variation in width and depth along their
length.
b) Trees.
c) Service lines like Telephone lines, Electrical lines and pipelines above the ground, if
any.
d) Permanent Structures like building, temples etc.
Cross sections are taken at regular intervals of 20m for length of 300m on upstream, and
300m on downstream of the river and at the existing bridge location. Longitudinal section of
river for length of 300m on each side of bridge has taken. L-Section and Cross sections of the
existing Road and proposed road are also taken on either side of bridge location. The following
survey drawings are incorporated in Volume 2 drawings:
a) TOPO sheet extract.
b) Survey Plan.
c) Longitudinal Sections and cross section of road.
d) Longitudinal Sections and cross section of river bed.
e) Imposed drawing of Survey plan on Google earth.
HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS
Based on the details of topographical survey, hydraulic calculations are made using
following methods:
a. Area Velocity Method.
b. Rational Method.
c. Empirical method or Catchment Area Method

DESIGN
3.0 HIGHWAY DESIGN
Under IRC guidelines, the desirable design speed for a State Highway is 100 Kmph with a
minimum design speed of 100 Kmph in plain terrain. In rolling terrain, it varies from 80 Kmph
to 65 Kmph.
The following crust details have been adopted from IRC: 37-2017 for an effective
CBR value of - 5%, for a traffic intensity of CVPD 475 and MSA 14.69 msa;
SDBC - 25 mm.
Bituminous Macadam - 50 mm
Wet mix macadam - 250mm (in 2 layer each 125mm thick).
The design of bridge is based on the relevant IRC (Indian Road Congress) Standards,
Specifications and Design Codes as well as the Guidelines set out in the IRC Special
Publications. Details of the standards referred are given in Table 4. Consideration is
given to the various circulars and guidelines issued periodically by MOST.

Bridges.
Bridge have been designed to cater for the loading as mentioned in Table 4
Standard programs for analysis e.g. STAAD PRO was used for structural Analysis,
Microsoft Excel was Used for design of superstructure and substructure and AutoCAD
2000 was used for drawings and detailing.
a. Design loads
The design loads used in the designs of bridges and culverts for a two-lane carriageway
width are presented in Table 5.
The effect of wind, water current and other forces are considered as per the provisions
of IRC: 6-2000.

b. Load Combinations
Following Live load reactions combinations were used for,
For Super Structure
3 lanes of class A
One lane of Class 70RW + 1 lanes of class A
One lane of Class 70RT + 1 lanes of class A
For Substructure
3 lanes of class A
One lane of Class 70RW + 1 lanes of class A
One lane of Class 70RT + 1 lanes of class A
Piers
The piers were designed as a RCC circular Pier. The loads corresponding to DL, SIDL,
LL, Braking, Wind and Earthquake were calculated in a spreadsheet. The load
combinations considered for pier are:
1. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL
2. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL + WL
3. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL + SL
4. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL + Buoyancy
Abutment
The abutments were designed as RCC Cantilever Wall abutment. The loads
corresponding to DL, SIDL, LL, Earth Pressure, Braking, and Earthquake were
calculated in a spreadsheet. The load combinations considered for Abutment are:
1. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL
2. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL + WL
3. Max DL+SIDL+FPLL+Max LL + SL
