WATER ABSORPTION TEST ON (I )BRICK/FLY ASH BRICK (ii) COARSE
AGGREGATES.

Aim:

To determine the water absorption of brick and coarse aggregate.

General Introduction:

Bricks constitute an important class of building material. Generally

there are two types of bricks such as country bricks and stock bricks. Water
absorption of brick is often taken as a measure of porosity, which in turn is
considered to be inductive of,

1. Possible leakage through the bricks and

2. Tendency towards disintegration when the moist bricks are subjected to
alternate freezing and thawing.
Water absorption gives an idea on the internal structure of
aggregate. Aggregates having more absorption are more porous in nature and
are generally considered unsuitable, unless found to be acceptable based on
strength, impact and hardness tests.
Apparatus:

1. Steel rule
2. Sensitive balance
3. Ventilated Oven
Procedure:

1. The specimen is dried in a ventilated oven at a temperature of 1050 C to

1150 C till it attained substantially constant mass.
2. The specimen is cooled to room temperature and it’s mass (W1) is
determined.
3. Then the completely dried specimen is immersed in clean water at a
temperature
of (27 +/- 2) 1o C for 24 hours.

4. The specimen is removed and wiped out of any traces of water with a
damp cloth and weighed (w2) within three minutes.
5. The above procedure is repeated on fresh specimens and all the
observations are tabulated and the average percentage water absorption
is worked out.

Result:
Water absorption of the given sample of brick = ____________ %

Water absorption of the given sample of Coarse Aggregate = ____________ %
