Project E-STAND: Enhancing Study Techniques for Autonomous and

Nurtured Development - Its Effectiveness in Learning General
Mathematics to ALS Grade 11 Students.

An action Research Proposal Presented to the

SCHOOL’S DIVISION RESEARCH COMITTEE
Surigao del Norte Division, Surigao City

Mr. Aldrin D. Daplin - 09666092972

January 28, 2024

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Learning mathematics is a tough and truly challenging part for the Alternative

Learning System (ALS) learners. Teachers have lots of unreliability, concerns, and

worries in the learning process of the learners while using this kind of modality in the

new normal set-up. Even if a solution to a math problem is well-presented in a module, it

will never be enough, efficient, and effective since some of the students are teacher-

dependent. Students were demotivated in reading and answering math exercises in the

module. It is as evidently shown on their performances in summative tests during the

first quarter and in Item Analysis found that evaluates a function (M11GM-Ia-2) with a

difficulty level of 0.32 which describes as “Not Mastered” considered as a least learned

competency. This is a problem since the said competency was not considered as least

learned during the face to face classes in previous years.

To address this students’ apparent problem, the researchers will provide a

supplemental material that is based on the technological approach to sustain the interest

of students learning in Mathematics. It will focus on using contextualized video tutorials

to supplement students' learning and able to use the material with OTG Flash Drive. In

which, OTG Flash Drive is a type of peripheral that enables portable devices like

smartphones to access directly and able to watch video tutorials in their respective

houses even without an internet connection.

According to Lai (2016), the availability of video tutorials enriched students’

learning experiences and enhanced their academic performance. The results suggest

that the learning benefits of the videos were instrumental to those students with average

learning ability and those who struggled to understand the course materials during the

class.
Generally, this study aims to provide an intervention using contextualized video

tutorials to improve the perfromances of Grade 11 students in evaluating a function.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study aims to determine whether using contextualized video tutorials

improves the academic performance of grade 11 students in evaluating the functions.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

1. What is the level of academic performance of the students in the pre-test and

post test in the:

a. control group; and

b. experimental group?

2. Is there a significant increase to the performance of control and experimental

groups between the pre-test and post test?

3. Is there a significant difference between the performance level of the students in

the control and experimental groups before and after the intervention?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

Contextualized video tutorials with OTG-Flash Drive is an offline technological

approach intervention that will boost the interest of the students in General Mathematics

specifically evaluating the functions. Using OTG-Flash Drive, students in experimental

group will be able to access the contextualized teachers’ made video tutorials. All

contextualized video tutorials are anchored on the given math exercises in the module.
The materials will then be saved in OTG-Flash Drive and distributed together with the

module during distribution.

STEPS:

1. The researchers will create a contextualized video tutorial based on the

math exercises given in the module. The said material will be checked

and validated by the experts.

2. The researchers will save the video to the OTG-Flash Drive.

3. The researchers will distribute the OTG-Flash Drive together with the

module in experimental group.

4. The students in experimental group will plug-in the OTG-Flash Drive on

their smartphones.

5. The students in experimental group will watch the video tutorials while

answering the modules in General Mathematics specifically on the the

topic evaluating the functions.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants

The participants of the study are the sixty (60) SMAW and STEM Grade 11

students of Tagana-an National High School currently enrolled in General Mathematics

first semester in the Academic Year 2020-2021, who have available smartphones

declared in their LESF. They were divided into two groups which are homogeneous.

Each group is a heterogeneous group in terms of intellectual and mathematical ability.

The researcher will provide modules with supplemental material which is the
contextualized video tutorials in experimental group while pure module in the control

group.

Group n Percentage( %)

Experimental Group 30 50

Control Group 30 50

Total 60 100

b. Data Gathering Tools

A letter will be sent to the school principal to secure permission to conduct the

study to some selected Grade 11 students. Once approved, the researcher will then

proceed to the activities outlined below.

Pre-Implementation Stage

The researcher will ask permission and consent from the parents and

students before applying the strategy in the lesson to avoid any nuisance while

conducting the study. Moreover, the orientation will be conducted through online and

home visitation. Afterwards, pre-test will be distributed to the identified participants of

the study individually in which the researcher-teacher will personally wait for the

students’ answer.

Implementation Stage

The researcher- teacher will apply different strategies into two

homogeneous groups. The control group will use the modular approach while the
experimental group will utilize the contextualize video tutorials made by the

researcher.

Post-Implementation Stage

After a week, post-test will be distributed to the identified participants of

the study individually in which the researcher-teacher will personally wait for the

students’ answer. Then, the data will be collected, treated and analyzed.

Data Analysis

The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) will be used for data

analysis:

Mean and Standard Deviation in describing the level of academic

performance of the students before and after instruction with or without the use of

contextualized video tutorials,

T-test for paired and correlated samples in determining the significant

increase between the pre-test and post-test scores of the students in each group,

and

T-test for independent samples in comparing the significant difference

between the performance level of the students in the control and experimental

groups before and after the intervention.

VII. Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

It should be presented during LAC sessions of the teachers so that they will be

aware of the effectiveness of contextualized video materials. Further, it will be presented

in the Local, National or even International research conferences.
