CREATING HEALTHY PLACES PROGRAM HELPS LOCAL MARKET STOCK FRESH PRODUCE. The Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play (CHPLWP) program of Glens Falls Hospital has launched a healthy corner store initiative with Schoonys Country Market in North Granville to increase the availability of fresh produce in the store. In a recent Physical Activity and Nutrition Assessment conducted in Washington County, more than 1,000 individuals were surveyed regarding the importance of the nutritional environment. The results indicated that the majority of respondents (approximately 82 percent) rated it important to very important that small grocery stores offer more fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy items. Schoonys Country Market is responding to this need and will now stock and advertise that they are carrying more vegetables and fruits through the help of the Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play program. Every neighborhood deserves access to affordable fruits and vegetables so that people can make healthy food choices, states Bob Schoonmaker, the markets owner. We are so happy well now be able to offer our customers more options for healthy produce. We are also hopeful to expand our offerings with locally-grown produce next growing season. Limited access to nutritious food has been linked to poor diets and may ultimately lead to obesity and diet-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, says Kathy Varney, Coordinator, CHPLWP. Improving access to healthy foods is a key component in the Health Promotion Centers Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play project and we are thrilled to be working with Schoonys Country Market. Creating Healthy Places is a grant-funded program being implemented by the Health Promotion Center of Glens Falls Hospital for Warren and Washington counties. The program promotes physical activity, wellness and increased access to healthy food opportunities through local policy and environmental changes. Glens Falls Hospital, founded in 1897, is a 410-bed, not-for-profit, community hospital serving a six-county region of Northeastern New York. With 3,000 employees it is the largest healthcare provider between Albany and Montreal, offering inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency, coronary, and cancer care; medicine/surgery; obstetrics; physical and occupational rehabilitation, and community services through the hospital and its 29 regional locations.
