Christmas in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is located in East Africa, in the region known
as the “Horn of Africa”. Traditions and Customs Christmas in Ethiopia is called Ganna, celebrated on January 7th. People attend a special church service , often dressed in white. Many Ethiopians fast for 43 days leading up to Ganna, eating only one vegan meal per day. Food and Drink Injera and Doro Wat: Traditional dishes include injera (a type of flatbread) and doro wat (spicy chicken stew). T'ej: A honey wine that is often enjoyed during festive occasions. Decorations
Homes and churches are decorated with candles, and
people wear traditional white clothing called "shamma." Some families decorate with green branches, symbolizing life. Celebrations and Activities
Genna: A game similar to hockey played by children
and adults. Large processions to and from church services.
