“CE 211 – FUNDAMENTALS OF SURVEYING”

Earthwork
One important aspect of roadway design is determining the amount of earthwork necessary
on a project. Earthwork includes the excavation of existing earth material and any placement
of fill material required for constructing the embankment. The manual method for
determining earth excavation and embankment amounts involves three steps: cross sections
of the proposed highway are placed on the original ground cross sections, the areas in cut and
the areas in fill are calculated, and the volumes between the sections are computed. Cut and
fill are the terms that are usually used for the areas of the section; the terms excavation and
embankment generally refer to volumes. The methods used to manually calculate cut and fill
areas are presented in most surveying textbooks.

VOLUME OF EARTHWORK:

PRISMOIDAL FORMULA:

𝐿
VP = 6 (𝐴1 + 4𝐴𝑚 + 𝐴2 )
END AREA:

𝐿
VE = 2 (𝐴1 + 𝐴2 )
VOLUME WITH PRISMOIDAL CORRECTION:

V = VE – Vcp
𝐿
Vcp = 12 (𝐶1 − 𝐶2 )(𝐷1 − 𝐷2 )

SITUATION 1:

Given the cross section notes of an earthwork between stations 10+100 to 10+200, assume
both stations to have the same side slope and width of the base.

STA 10+100 STA 10+200

Left Center Right Left Center Right
6.45 0 4.5 6.0 0 6.9
+2.3 +1.5 +1.0 +2.0 x +2.6
a. compute the side slope of both section

b. Compute the value of x at station 10+200 if it has a cross sectional area of 14.64m2.

c. Compute the volume between stations 10+100 and 10+200 using end area method with
prismoidal correction.

SITUATION 2:

In a certain portion of road to be constructed the following data were taken.

STA 1+040 STA 1+100

Left Center Right Left Center Right
Z1 0 Z2 Z3 0 Z4
-1.84 -1.22 -0.42 +1.098 +3.05 +0.50
Base for cut = 9m Side slopes = 1:1

Base for fill = 8m Side slopes = 1.5:1

a. compute the area of station 1+040.

b. find the area of station 1+100

c. determine the diff in volume of cut and fill using end area method.

SITUATION 3:

The center height of the road at Sta. 7+110 is 2m fill while at Sta. 7+160 is 1.2m cut. From Sta.
7+110 to the other station the ground makes a uniform slope of 4.8%.

a. compute the slope of the new road.

b. find the distance in meters from sta. 7+110 in which the fill is extended

c. compute the stationing of the point where the fill is extended.

SITUATION 4:
From station 0+040 with center height of 1.40m fill, the ground line makes a uniform slope of
5% to station 0+100, whose center height is 2.80m cut. Assume both sections to be level
sections with side slopes of 2:1 for fill and 1.5:1 for cut.

a. find the grade of the finished road surface.

b. find the area at each station

c. by end area method, find the amount of cut and fill.

d. between these two stations, is it borrow or waste? Roadway for fill is 9m, and for cut it is
10m

SITUATION 5: (ASSIGNMENT)

Given the following section of an earthwork for a proposed road construction on a hilly
portion of the route, the width of the road base for cut is 6m and 5m for fill. Side slopes for cut
is 1:1 and for fill is 1.5:1

3.7 0 x
-0.8 0 +1.8

a. compute the value of x.

b. compute the area in fill.

c. compute the area in cut.
