5357 design project

If using Table 1
Step 1:
Determine the design Current Ib
For standard loads;

watts
Ib = Ib=
volts x power factor

For discharge lighting;

watts
Ib= x 1.8
volts x power factor

or as table A1 On Site Guide

Ib per line
For 3phase balanced loads
watts
Ib=
√ 3 × 400 × pf

For socket outlet circuits

Ib=In

Step 2:
Select the nominal rating of protective device In
𝑰𝒏 ≥ 𝑰𝒃

Step 3:
Gather information relating to the circuit
 Method of installation from table 4A2 BS 7671
 Maximum voltage drop (5% power, 3% lighting or as
specification)
 Rating factor for ambient temperature Ca table 4B BS 7671
 Rating factor for grouping Cg from tables 4C BS 7671

Step 4:
As many circuits are sized due to voltage drop constraints, it is
simpler to select a cable csa based on
this then prove for current capacity
max volt drop x 1000
Calculate 𝐦𝐚𝐱 𝐦𝐕/𝐀/𝐦 = Ib x length

The value calculated is then compared to the voltage drop tables from
BS 7671 (tables 4D1B onwards)
The value calculated must be less than the value in the table.

Step 5:
For the cable csa selected due to voltage drop, select value of It from
the current capacity table (4D1A onwards) taking care to use the
correct column.

Prove the cable capacity by

𝑰𝒛 = 𝐼𝑡 × 𝑪𝒂 × 𝑪𝒈 × 𝑪𝒊 × 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔

Any factors not applicable are not used in the formula above
The value Iz calculated must be larger than the nominal rating of
protective device (In)

If using table 2

Step 1-
Determine design current (Ib)
For simple single-phase resistive loads
watts
Ib=
volts
For socket outlet circuits- 𝐼𝑏=𝐼𝑛

For other circuits, see IET OSG Table A1

Step 2-
Select device rating (In) 𝐼𝑛≥𝐼𝑏

Step 3-
Gather the following information
Method of installation- Table 4A2
Rating factor ambient temperature (Ca)- Table 4B1
Rating factor for grouping of circuits (Cg)-Table 4C1

Step 4-
Determine the minimum permissible current capacity by
¿≥ ¿
Ca x Cg x Ci x Cf
Step 5-
Select a suitable cable csa from the relevant table F4-6 depending on
the type of cable selected
Be sure to select a value of current equal to or larger than the value
calculated on the previous step (4)
Be sure to select the correct column depending on the method of
installation used.

Step 6-
Confirm Voltage Drop-
Using the correct voltage drop table for the cable selected, select the
value of milli-volts per ampere per metre (mV/A/m) based on the csa

mV / A /m × Length × design current(Ib )

voltage drop=
1000
Question 5 help sheet
Some of this can also be used for question 4

Where the cpc is not part of a cable and can be selected separately,

 Find the correct disconnection time from table 41.1 BS 7671

or OSG 3.5.3 & appendix B
 Determine the maximum permissible Zs in bs 7671 tables
41.2, 41.3, or 41.4 or OSG appendix B (using the correct table
for the correct device)
 Establish the external earth fault loop impedance (Ze) check
the spec
Remember if the circuit has a distribution circuit supplying it,
this will be part of this Ze

Select the appropriate temperature correction factor from appendix I

table I3 in the OSG

We can select the minimum cpc size by the minimum permissible

R1+R2. (referred to as little r1 + little r2) (r1+r2)

Max Zs−Ze
𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒓𝟏+𝒓𝟐 = table I 3 factor x length x 1000

The value from the formula, in mΩ/m, is then used to select a

line/cpc combination using table I1 in the IET OSG. You will need to
select a combination with a value less than the calculated value

Determine the actual R1+R2. Select the value of mΩ/m for the
line/cpc csa combination from table I1 IET OSG and calculate (also
found in appendix B of GN3)

mΩ/m ×length ×table I 3 factor

𝑹𝟏+𝑹𝟐 ¿ 1000

Once we have worked out the above we can then determine actual
Zs, look in the spec to find your Ze value

𝒁𝒔=𝒁𝒆+(𝑹𝟏+𝑹𝟐)

Once the Zs is determined, it must be confirmed with the maximum

permissible in BS 7671 from tables 41.1, 41.2 or 41.3 or OSG
appendix B depending on the device used and disconnection time
