ostentation, it is a symphony of
architectural prowess and artistic
finesse, where every detail is
meticulously curated to harmonize the
timeless allure of vintage charm with
the sleek sophistication of modernity.
In Gatsby, extravagance meets
subtlety in a delicate fashion, each
complementing the other to create
a warm living space, where the past
intertwines with the present, where
every curve, texture and layer whispers

Introduction
The Gatsby, is a two-storied family home crafted by Envisage Architects, that
breathes life into, the clients’ perception of luxury. With opulence at the forefront
and a strong regional influence, this abode reminisces in the razzle-dazzle of the
1920s. It inherently trails in the 20’s dazzling footsteps, keeping in touch with the
contemporary style to attain the moniker of ‘classic’ soon enough.

The Gatsby

Site Context
Stationed in a residential neighbourhood of the capital city, with residences sharing walls on either
side, this 7,000 sq. ft. contemporary home stands tall. The compact plot size of 2,200 sq. ft. serves as
the driving force for the planning of this abode. This north-facing abode overlooks a road, for easy
accessibility of its inhabitants while complying with Vaastu principles. The strategic placement, of
this home and its openings allow for the natural light to saturate the living spaces while preserving
the privacy of the residents. Consequently, the plot’s dimensions sanctioned the 5 BHK dwelling to
rise, quite literally in its fashionable glory.

Design Concept
Referencing the American fictional masterpiece ‘The Great Gatsby’, this namesake abode stands
true to its literary reference. With the incessant amount of glamour and extravagant parties filling
up most of the pages of the book, this residence too delves into this lavish feeling of extravagance,
hinting at a sense of nostalgia. Deriving inspiration from the Art Deco movement, trending during
the distribution of the book, this home too basks in the bizazz and allure of the style. It amends the
definition of luxury to harmonize it with the clients’ definition and their personality. It personifies
the glitz and glamour, adapting to the discernments of its residents.

Stilt Floor Plan

The compact nature of the plot posed a challenge for Meena Murthy Kakkar, principal architect of
Envisage. This compound challenge was tackled by planning for the home to rise vertically, all the
while establishing a visual connection throughout. In synchronization with the vertical alignment,
the ground or stilt floor accommodates a dedicated parking with segregated entries for automobiles
and pedestrians. Strategic placement of a foyer and seating lounge on this floor, not only ingeniously
conceals the electric panel room and the washroom but also allows the inhabitant to meet their
guests, without compromising their privacy. It also obscures other services introducing a pop of
verdant to the space. The pedestrians on entering come, head-on with a string of steps that lead the
way to the main house.

Ground Floor
After hiking a series of treads from the ground floor, a grey rugged door resembles a portal gate
to escort one into a world of luxe. Flanking the entrance, a balcony offers another chance for the
visitors to overlook the urban surroundings before the home’s inner sanctum ensnares them in its
clutches. Upon crossing the threshold, a foyer space comes into focus, setting the podium for the
spaces to be unveiled. An opulent living room, facing north shares its space with a modest dining
area, completely soaked in the soft glow of the natural light. Adjacent to the dining area is a kitchen,
attached with a utility area for added functionality. The kitchen ensemble opens up towards the
south following the Vaastu principles. A powder room is tucked behind a curved wall in the western
side of the home. Opposite the powder room, is a TV lounge that becomes a private sanctuary for
the family on those dawdling evenings. Moving ahead, a balcony provides a dual function, offering
vistas of the exteriors, with an option for the family to hang out.

Living Area
A rotating, metal partition gives an enticing sneak peek of the double-height expansive living area.
This space is defined by soft curves that peek from above, casting an illusion of the space seamlessly
flowing with the others. The north side of this room boasts a double-height, French window that
bathes the space in an ethereal glow of ample natural light. The feature wall introduces a series
of marble-clad fins complementing the marble-clad wall parallel to it, reflecting the sunlight that
streams through the expansive windows. A charcoal grey Chesterfield couch, paired with a circular
coffee table with brass legs sits in front of the French window, while a grey couch and a tan couch
with matching Ottoman occupy the other two sides of the room. On either sides of the grey couch
is a set black lamps with hints of brass that contribute to the whimsical ambiance of the space. The
cobalt poufs accompanied by a black glass and brass coffee table introduce a vibrant pop of colour
and whimsy. Overlooking this complete ensemble is a rose-gold metal chandelier that trickles down,
exuding a regal vibe to the space while imparting a soft golden glow on those cozy evenings.

Dining Area
The dining area shares its space with the living area, as a result basking in the natural light that
streams in through the expansive window. The dining area features block-printed upholstered
chairs with wooden legs, adding a quirky trace to the space. The black glass dining table with a hint
of brass, is complemented by a glossy black and golden cabinet perpetuating the luxe vibe of the
space. Three pendant lamps impart a soft glow, as the family sits down to share a heartful dinner. An
artwork with hues of chrome and crimson, paired with a house plant balances the hues and tones,
contributing a dash of frisky.

Kitchen
Flanking the dining area is a kitchen, satiating the space requirements of a kitchen in an Indian
household. A fluted counter faces the dining area doubling up as a breakfast counter for grabbing
hasty meals. Stocked with enough storage space, a series of cabinets ensures a clutter-free space
and hassle-free cooking. The clad beige wall tiles, preserve the sense of luxe pairing, it with
minimalism and functionality. The kitchen is attached to a utility area that boasts a washing area,
and a refrigerator, which looks out onto the surroundings. The kitchen bonds with the day lounge,
through a niche in the wall, where the family can hang out or entertain guests.

Lounge
A lounge space with an attached balcony, becomes the family’s private sanctuary to unwind
after a hectic day. A feature wall consists of a TV with a deep chocolate brown, fluted background
perpetuating the cabin core aesthetic of the space. Adjoining this ensemble is a set of cabinets to
display cherished heirlooms and a medley of items. This TV-watching space, brimming with deep
chocolate brown plush leather armchairs paired with a jet-black coffee table exudes a cabin core
aesthetic. A tan oval chair affixes a perky touch to the otherwise dark palette of the room. It features
a miniature version of the rose gold chandelier, that lies in the living room, harmonizing with a
painting featuring hints of chrome sitting in synchronization with the ambiance of the space. In the
northern corner of the room behind a wooden panelled door, sits an opulent powder bathroom.
With glossy tile-clad walls, brass-bordered mirrors, and a black and golden-hued basin counter, it
perpetuates the extravagant nature of the home.

First Floor
On ascending a marble back-lit staircase, with sculpted brass railings and a brown and grey
backdrop, one comes into an airy sprawling foyer overlooking the living area. Moving further on
the east side is the daughter’s room with an attached bathroom. The room spills onto the balcony
further enhancing the symphonic relationship between the surroundings and the dwelling. Adjacent
to this room is a master bedroom with an attached bathroom and dresser perpetuating the theme
of perceptive luxury.

Daughter’s Bedroom
This bedroom with an attached washroom, is a vibrant haven that breathes in pastel hues defining
the spirited personality of the daughter. A blush study area graces a junction of the room, paired with
wooden flooring. Adjoining the study area is a bed, with a playful headboard inspired by the curves
of the home. With hues of blush, cobalt, and white, bordered with a brass edge, the headboard
mirrors the lively vibe of the room. A wooden seating area, opposite the bed, serves as the daughter’s
cozy reading nook, with a plush leather seat. The room boasts an Art-Decoesque chandelier with
a modern take, featuring vibrant colours and prints. The room spills onto the balcony where the
daughter spends her quiet evenings just looking out.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is immersed in verdant and azure hues perpetuating the art-deco style of
the home. It features an attached dresser and bathroom for ease of accessibility and improved
functionality. The feature wall boasts, white veneer panelling with gold grooves flanked by a powder
blue printed wallpaper that exude a sense of lavishness to the space. This wall serves as a backdrop
to the bed with an emerald green headboard, which is an indispensable shade often associated
with the art-deco style. This ensemble is lined with a grey storage counter with a black motif, with
a mirror perched above it. On either side of the bed are two glass lamps that seem straight out of a
page from a vintage periodical. A painting graces the room’s inner sanctum affixing a spirited touch
to the space.

Second Floor Plan

The entire second floor is a dedicated guest area, where they can stay over without interrupting the
inhabitants’ privacy, while also having their own. Facing the north side is a living area accompanied
by a balcony, that features a curved ceiling, casting an illusion of embracing the space. Moving
further, it houses a modest dining area with a pantry counter that receives its shine from the French
window on the northern side. The guest bedrooms with attached bathrooms are tucked away in the
farther southeast and southwest corners, adding a layer of privacy to the spaces.

Terrace Floor Plan

The terrace floor perched above is the dwelling’s crowning jewel, serving as a quiet getaway on
those tranquil evenings. It features a seating area around a fireplace, perfect for hosting elaborate
evening soirees on those frosty December evenings. On the farther corner, it houses a covered
patio with sliding windows that slide open, seamlessly fusing with the outdoor seating space. This
covered patio features cane couches with black leather upholstery and printed throws for pillows.
The ensemble is complemented by a black coffee table top with cane legs. The printed rug and
wicker pouf enhance the rugged vibe of the space. Subtle hints of verdant exude a tranquil vibe to
the space adding to its serene nature.

Façade
The façade perpetuates the art-deco aesthetic of the residence, featuring flowy curves throughout
its expanse. The lower floors feature curves in their balconies, mirroring the flowy character of the
natural surroundings. Taking cues from the curves the roof was curved in an asymmetrical fashion,
giving rise to a loft that was later ingeniously used as a space to accommodate folks or friends.
This curve crusades as a distinctive element, altering the elevation of the home and making it a
landmark of the vicinity.

Hues and Stuffs

Stone plays a crucial role in shaping the luxe interiors while matching the opulent concept of the home.
A minimum of ten Italian stones were employed to impart a sense of classic whimsy to the spaces.
Since the stone has a grey hue to it, the entire home was crafted in a grey palette to harmonize with
the stones. Hues and shades of black are evident in the upholstery, wooden panelling, and lamps
adding a sleek touch to the spaces. The gold accents act as a highlighting element of the abode,
appearing on the edges of the furniture, mirrors, and paintings augmenting the lavish aesthetic of
the spaces. A conscious effort was made by architect Meena to mute the overbearing textures, hues,
and accents by allowing some spaces to breathe in the air of minimalism.

Conclusion
Art Deco has stood the test of time, and hence ‘the past has been repeated’ in this house with a
hint of contemporary styling. With the use of stone, wood, and brass, the residence bling’s bright
fusing classical elements. This contemporary abode with just enough textures becomes a cherished
haven, deviating from the trends to become a timeless piece, similar to its namesake.
